1. Pakistan`s official Twitter account `withheld` in India

• The Twitter account of the government of Pakistan has been withheld in India, local reports said on October 1, 2022.
• While there was no official word from Pakistan regarding the step, Indian news agency ANI reported that @GovtofPakistan had been `withheld in India in response to a legal demand`.
• According to reports, Twitter now displays a notice on the profile saying the account is withheld in India `following a legal demand` India`s pro-government Of India website said only the Twitter handle of the government of Pakistan has been blocked. Its accounts on other social media platforms like Facebook, YouTube and Instagram remain intact.


2. Key meetings planned as army chief arrives in US

• Chief of Army Staff Gen Qamar Javed Bajwa arrived in the United States for an almost weeklong visit, which includes meetings with senior officials of the Biden administration, officials said on Friday.
• `Yes, he is here,` said Pakistan`s Ambassador Sardar Masood Khan, when journalists asked him for information about the army chief`s visit.
• While the envoy refrained from sharing the chief`s itinerary, other sources said Gen Bajwa was expected to meet Defence Secretary Lloyd Austin, National Intelligence Director Avril D. Haines, and CIA Director William J. Burns.
• Pakistani officials are also trying to secure a meeting with US Secretary of State Antony Blinken. `It is very likely, but not confirmed yet,` a source said


3. Karachi-Peshawar train service resumes today

• After a five-week hiatus, train service between Karachi and Peshawar resumes on Sunday (October 2, 2022), with Rahman Baba Express being the first passenger train to leave the Karachi Cantt station at around 10am, followed by Khyber Mail.
• Their departure will mark gradual restoration of rail link of country`s south with north, which had been disconnected due to the devastation caused by monsoon rains and flash floods in recent months.
• While several areas of Khairpur, Dadu,Sehwan, Jamshoro, Badin, Tando Jam Mohammad and Juddo in Sindh are still inundated, a meeting presided over by federal Minister for Railways Khwaja Saad Rafique decided to gradually restore train services after reviewing reports on receding floodwaters from tracks and necessary repairs


4. Soldier martyred in Congo during UN mission

• A Pakistani soldier, part of the UN peacekeeping mission, embraced martyrdom in a militant attack in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, a press release issued by Inter-services Public Relations (ISPR) said on October 1, 2022.
• On Friday, six armed assailants from Banyamulenge Armed Group approached the Permanent Operation Base (POB) in the Minembwe area of South Kivu province to surrender as part of the UN`s initiative.
• However, they opened fire and during the ensuing gun battle, Havaldar Babar Siddique, who was stationed at the gate, was shot at. He was evacuated to a nearby medical camp but he could not survive


5. Iran closes Taftan border after Zahedan clashes

• The Iranian authorities closed the border with Pakistan at Taftan after clashes between the protesters and security forces in Zahedan, the capital city of sistan Baluchestan.
• According to sources in the Federal Investigation Agency (FIA), the immigration and transit gate for trade and tax-free trade gate, Zero Point, remained closed from the Iranian side.
• But 780 people awaiting on the Iranian side were allowed return immigration clearance, they added.
• The FIA sources said that no formal intimation was conveyed to them about the closure of the border

6. Erdogan renews threat to block Swedish, Finnish NATO bids

• President Recep Tayyip Erdogan on October 1, 2022 warned Turkey would not ratify the NATO membership bids of Sweden and Finland until the two Nordic countries `kept` promises they had made to Ankara.
• `Until the promises made to our country are kept, we will maintain our principled position,` Erdogan said in a speech to parliament in Ankara.
• `We are closely following whether the promises made by Sweden and Finland are kept or not, and of course, the final decision will be up to our great parliament,` he added.
• Russia`s invasion of Ukraine in February saw the two Nordic countries abandon decades of military non-alignment and in May apply to join NATO


7. North Korea fires ballistic missiles, 4th time this week

• North Korea fired two ballistic missiles early on October 1, 2022, South Korea`s military said, the nuclear-armed country`s fourth launch this week as Seoul, Tokyo and Washington ramp up joint military drills to counter Pyongyang.
• South Korea, Japan and the US staged anti-submarine drills on Friday the first in five years just days after Washington and Seoul`s navies conducted large-scale exercises in waters off the peninsula.
• US Vice President Kamala Harris was in Seoul on Thursday and toured the heavily fortified Demilitarised Zone that divides the peninsula, on a trip that aimed to underscore her country`s `ironclad` commitment to South Korea`s defence against the North


8. Russia suspends gas to Italy after `problem` in Austria

• Russia`s Gazprom has suspended gas deliveries to Italy`s Eni, blaming a transport problem in Austria, the Italian energy giant said on Saturday.
• `Gazprom told us that it was not able to confirm the delivery of the volumes demanded for today, citing the impossibility of gas transport through Austria, Eni said in a statement. As a result, `Russian gas flows to Eni via the Tarvisio entry point will be naught`, it said.
• Most of Russian gas delivered to Italy passes via Ukraine through the Trans Austria Gas Pipeline (TAG), to Tarvisio in northern Italy on the border with Austria


9. Lebanon receives US `offer` over Israel maritime border deal

• Lebanon said on October 1, 2022 it received a letter from US envoy Amos Hochstein containing an `offer` on a maritime border deal with Israel that could settle competing claims over offshore gas fields.
• Prime Minister Najib Mikati met with US ambassador to Lebanon Dorothy Shea `who delivered a written offer from the US mediator`, the premier`s office said, without elaborating.
• President Michel Aoun also met with Shea `who handed him a written letter… containing proposals regarding the demarcation of the southern maritime border,` Aoun`s office said


10. Antonio Inoki, Japanese wrestling icon turned politician, dies at 79

• Antonio Inoki, a Japanese professional wrestling star turned politician, has died aged 79, after years of battling a rare disease, the company he founded said on October 1, 2022.
• His death, which public broadcaster NHK said was from heart failure, brought to an end a varied life in the public eye, during which Inolci fought Muhammad Ali, fostered close personal ties with North Korea, and helped free hostages in Iraq.
• The Yokohama native born Kanji Inoki also starred in American wrestling promotions, as well as serving two separate terms in Japan`s legislature.
• `New Japan Pro Wrestling is deeply saddened at the passing of our founder, Antonio Inoki, the company he started in 1972 posted on Twitter
