6. Pakistan`s efforts for uplift of aviation industry lauded

• International Civil Aviation Organisation (ICAO) President Salvatore Sciacchitano has appreciated Pakistan`s efforts to transform the country`s aviation sector into an effective, qualitative and modern industry, meeting global air-safety standards.
• He expressed these views during a meeting with Pakistan Civil Aviation Authority (PCAA) Director General Khagan Murtaza on the sidelines of the ICAO`s 41st Assembly in Montreal, Canada, according to a press release issued here on Wednesday.
• The council general of Pakistan in Canada and deputy director general of the PCAA also attended the meeting. During the meeting, the PCAA DG highlighted the important legislation and progress made by the Pakistan government to bring improvement in the aviation sector.
• Mr Murtaza also met the ICAO secretary general and discussed matters of mutual interests


7. AJK govt and opposition mend fences after premier offers apology

• A confrontation between the government and opposition parties in Azad Jammu and Kashmir (AJK) apparently came to an end on Wednesday after Prime Minister Sardar Tanveer Ilyas offered apologies to two key opposition leaders on the floor of the Legislative Assembly.
• The faceoff, triggered by PM Ilyas`s comment about Leader of the Opposition Chaudhry Latif Akbar about a week ago, exacerbated on Monday after Law Minister Sardar Faheem Akhtar Rabbani tossed his mobile phone at former premier Raja Farooq Haider during the assembly session in the wake of an alleged exchange of barbs.
• The untoward incident not only unleashed scuffles and torrents of abuse between the two sides, forcing the chair to adjourn the session for two days, but also triggered violent street protests by supporters of Mr Haider from his PML-N party


8. Failed missile launch triggers panic in South Korean city

• A failed ballistic missile launch sparked panic in a usually quiet South Korean city after it crashed into the ground and triggered a huge fire, officials said on October 5, 2022.
• Security allies Seoul and Washington have staged multiple joint drills, including bombing runs and missile launches, in response to North Korea firing an intermediate range ballistic missile (IRBM) over Japan on Tuesday.
• The South Korean military fired a Hyunmoo-2 shortrange ballistic missile late Tuesday but it malfunctioned and crashed shortly after launch.
• The missile`s propellant caught fire but its warhead did not detonate, a South Korean military official told the Yonhap news agency.


9. Putin orders takeover of Ukraine`s N-plant

• Russian President Vladimir Putin ordered his government on October 5, 2022 to take over operations at Europe`s largest nuclear power station in the Russia-annexed region of Zaporizhzhia, southern Ukraine.
• `The government will ensure that the nuclear facilities at the plant… are integrated as federal property,` the executive order said.
• The power station has been occupied by Moscow`s forces since March and is close to the frontline.
• Meanwhile, the UN nuclear agency chief left for Ukraine on Wednesday to discuss creating a security zone around the Zaporizhzhia atomic plant


10. US duo and Dane win Nobel for `click chemistry`

• A trio of scientists from the United States and Denmark won the Nobel Chemistry Prize on October 5, 2022 for laying the foundation for a more functional form of chemistry where molecules are linked together.
• Americans Carolyn Bertozzi and Barry Sharpless, together with Denmark`s Morten Meldal, were honoured `for the development of click chemistry and bioorthogonal chemistry`, the jury said.
• Bertozzi is the only woman among the seven Nobel laureates honoured so far this year, with women vastly under-represented in the history of the prizes, especially in the science disciplines
