1. UNGA agrees to support Pakistan`s reconstruction

• The UN General Assembly (UNGA) on October 7, 2022 unanimously adopted a resolution urging donor nations and institutions to provide full support to rehabilitation and reconstruction efforts in Pakistan.
• `The scaling calamities in Pakistan can linger for years.
• Massive guidance and support to the government of Pakistan are absolutely essential,` said UN Secretary General António Guterres, while speaking in favour of the resolution.
• The resolution, co-sponsored by 159 countries, urges the international community, `in particular donor countries, international financial institutions and relevant international organisations, as well as the private sector and civil society, to extend full support and assistance to Pakistan in its efforts to mitigate the adverse impacts of the floods and to meet the medium and long-term rehabilitation and reconstruction needs`

2. NA panel terms move to amend net metering rules `anti-people`

• The National Assembly`s Standing Committee on Cabinet Secretariat has termed proposed amendments to Net Metering Rules against the public interest and directed the National Electric Power Regulatory Authority (NEPRA) not to proceed with the amendments till the issue was under consideration of the committee.
• Net metering is a billing mechanism that credits solar energy system proprietors for the power they add to the grid.
• Sources said the committee members appeared quite sceptical about the role of Nepra in initiating such amendments and said that the proposed amendments would not only discourage people to convert to renewable energy but also increase the burden on the government

3. Truth once stated can`t be denied later, says SC

• The Supreme Court has held that a person is not allowed at a later stage, in any suit or proceedings, to deny or resile from the truth he has declared about himself and made it believe to be correct.
• `In fact this principle is established on equity and fair-mindedness with the sole intention to nip in the bud the element of fraud and deception in order to ensure justice,` Justice Mohammad Ali Mazhar observed in a service matter.
• He was part of a three-judge bench, headed by Justice Sardar Tariq Masood and also comprising Justice Aminud Din Khan, which had taken up an appeal of Ali Bux Shaikh against the dismissal of his plea by the Sindh Service Tribunal, Karachi, on Sept 21, 2020

4. Macron-promised donor conference by year`s end: FO

• The Foreign Office on Friday emphasised the need for world`s continued and sustained support for the rehabilitation and reconstruction of flood hit areas as it said that Pakistan would ask the international community to fund its `comprehensive reconstruction model` at a donors` conference being planned for the end of the year.
• Speaking at the weeldy media briefing, FO spokesperson Asim Iftikhar said rehabilitation and reconstruction phase is going to be `a huge task` and continued and sustained support and solidarity of the international community will be required. He specifically mentioned the donors` conference being hosted by France which is expected to bring together global financial and development partners and ask them to contribute to the rehabilitation and the reconstruction work.

5. UN rights council to monitor situation in Russia

• The UN Human Rights Council agreed on October 7, 2022 to monitor the rights situation in Russia, marking the first-ever resolution focused on violations inside the country.
• The 47-member top UN rights body accepted the draft text presented by all European Union countries with the exception of Hungary, with 17 nations voting in favour of appointing a special rapporteur to monitor Russia.
• Twenty-four countries abstained, while six voted `no`, including China, Cuba and Venezuela.
• The vote comes a few months after Russia was kicked off the council over its war in Ukraine, and marks the first time the rights body has decided to delve into the situation inside the country

6. Putin`s nuclear threat brings world closer to `Armageddon`, says Biden

• Russian President Vladimir Putin`s threat to use nuclear weapons in Ukraine has brought the world closer to `Armageddon` than at any time since the Cold-War Cuban Missile Crisis, US President Joe Biden said.

7. European rights advocates share peace Nobel

• A trio of human rights watchdogs from Belarus, Russia and Ukraine won the Nobel Peace Prize on October 7, 2022, a highly symbolic choice of laureates drawn from three nations at the centre of the war in Ukraine.
• The honour went to detained activist Ales Bialiatski of Belarus, Russian rights group Memorial and Ukraine`s Center for Civil Liberties, which is recording the toll of the conflict on the nation.
• `They have made an outstanding effort to document war crimes, human right abuses and the abuse of power,` the head of the Norwegian Nobel Committee, Berit Reiss-Andersen, told reporters

8. Scientists plan to grow plants on Moon

• Australian scientists are trying to grow plants on the Moon by 2025 in a mission unveiled on October 7, 2022 that they said could help pave the way for a future colony.
• Plant biologist Brett Williams, from the Queensland University of Technology, said seeds would be carried by the Beresheet 2 spacecraft a private Israeli Moon mission.
• They would be watered inside the sealed chamber after landing and monitored for signs of germination and growth

9. Rizwan-inspired Pakistan beat BD in T20 tri-series opener

• Mohammad Rizwan underlined why he will be a key weapon for Pakistan at the Twenty20 World Cup, top-scoring in a 21-run win over Bangladesh in Christchurch on October 7, 2022.
• Right-handed Rizwan maintained his rich vein of form with an unbeaten 78 as Pakistan posted 167-5, before restricting their opponents to 146-8.
• It was the opening match of a week-long tournament, which also includes hosts New Zealand. All three teams are using it to prepare for the T20 World Cup in Australia

10. Nida, Nashra help Pakistan stun India in Women`s Asia Cup

• Veteran Nida Dar`s impressive all-round show backed by a three-wicket burst from Nashra Sandhu helped Pakistan shock arch-rivals India by 13 runs in the Women`s Asia Cup T20 at the Sylhet International Cricket Stadium on October 7, 2022.
• India batted poorly to be dismissed for 124 in 19.4 overs after Pakistan totaled a modest 137 for six off the stipulated overs on winning the toss.
• At 65 for five, India were in all sorts of trouble with majority of the batters including star player Smriti Mandhana (17 off 19) throwing their wickets away
