1. UNICEF warning on acute malnutrition in kids

• The United Nations Children`s Fund (UNICEF) has warned that health facilities, in the aftermath of the devastating floods, are reporting alarming levels of acute malnutrition among children in the affected areas, and called for support from the international community to reach over seven million children, adolescent girls and women who are in need of nutritious services.
• While more than one in nine children under five admitted to health facilities in the flood-affected areas of Sindh and Balochistan were found to be suffering from severe acute malnutrition, over one million people are in need of safe drinking water and over 6m in need of sanitation services, the UN agency said in a statement.
• UNICEF also called for integrating nutrition into government`s health delivery services and increased allocation of government funding for nutrition in the long term. Of the over 22,000 children screened by health professionals since September this year at health facilities in flood-affected areas, more than 2,630 were diagnosed with severe acute malnutrition, or more than one in nine children, it said

2. KP Assembly adopts resolution against Imran`s disqualification with majority vote

• Adopting a resolution against the disqualification of former prime minister and Pakistan Tehreek-i-Insaf chairman Imran Khan with a majority vote, the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Assembly on Saturday called the decision of the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) in the Toshakhana case partial, unconstitutional and an `ambush on democracy` in the country and urged the judiciary to strike it down.
• Deputy Speaker Mahmood Jan, who chaired the stormy proceedings of the house here, put the agenda aside and gave the floor to higher education minister Kamran Khan Bangash immediately after recitation from the Holy Quran to table the resolution.
• The resolution carried the chair`s signature as well.
• The opposition benches protested the deputy speaker`s conduct causing a commotion in the house.

3. `US doesn`t need mediators for Taliban talks`

• The United States does not need Pakistan or any other country to facilitate its engagement with the Afghan Taliban, says US Special Representative for Afghanistan Thomas West.
• `To be honest, I don`t think we need a third country to facilitate our engagement with the Taliban, said Mr West when asked if Pakistan could facilitate their talks with Afghanistan`s current rulers.
• `I am in very regular touch with the Taliban. There are other colleagues of mine in the US government who are also engaging. I think that dialogue needs to be direct. I don`t think we need a third country,` he added

4. US repatriates 46 smuggled artifacts

• The US government has repatriated 46 artifacts back to Pakistan, including the most notable $1.1 million Buddhapadha, that now fill the central space at the Islamabad Museum.
• The Kushan period footprints of Buddha (Buddhapadha) were stolen from an unknown archaeological site in the Gandhara region of Pakistan in the 1980s, and smuggled to the United States.
• A Japanese art dealer Tatsuzo Kaku was involved in smuggling the sculpture.
• `The footprints of the Buddha were recovered by the Manhattan district attorney`s office in New York during the investigation and prosecution of a criminal case involving international smuggling and sale of stolen antiquities,` said Assistant Director Department of Archaeology and Museums (DOAM) Dr Mehmoodul Hassan. He elaborated that the artifact was detected at an auction where it was put up for sale for an estimated $1.1 million

5. Far-right Meloni sworn in as Italy`s first woman PM

• Far-right leader Giorgia Meloni was sworn in as Italian prime minister on October 22, 2022, to become the first woman to head a government in Italy.
• Meloni took the oath before President Sergio Mattarella at the Quirinal Palace in Rome, once home to popes and kings of Italy.
• Her post-fascist Brothers of It aly party Eurosceptic and anti-immigration won the Sept 25 legislative polls but needed outside support to form a government.
• Meloni`s appointment is an historic event for the eurozone`s third largest economy and for Brothers of Italy, which has never been in government

6. Ukraine faces power cuts after Russian strikes, more flee Kherson

• Critical infrastructure across Ukraine was pounded by more than a dozen Russian missiles on October 22, 2022, the Ukrainian air force said, with several regions reporting strikes on energy facilities and power outages.
• At the same time Russian occupation authorities in the Ukrainian city of Kherson urged civilians to leave immediately citing what they called a tense military situation as Ukraine`s forces advance.
• Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy wrote on the Telegram app regarding Russian attacks on infrastructure that began overnight: `The enemy launched a massive attack: 36 rockets, most of which were shot down.` The air force command earlier had said 33 missiles had been fired at Ukraine on Saturday morning, adding that 18 of them had been shot down. Since Oct 10, Russia has launched a series of devastating salvos at Ukraine`s power infrastructure, which have hit at least half of its thermal power generation and up to 40pc of the entire system

8. Israeli forces kill Palestinian in West Bank

• Israeli soldiers shot and killed a Palestinian in the occupied West Bank on Saturday, Palestinian health officials said, and a Palestinian stabbed an Israeli in Jerusalem, police said.
• The Israeli military said its troops were trying to detain a vehicle after its passengers had crossed illegally into Israel. It said the vehicle fled and hit a soldier, after which `the soldiers fired towards the vehicle`.
• One of the passengers died at hospital, Palestinian hospital officials said. The man`s father told Palestinian Qudsnet news that his son was headed for work when he was shot. It was unclear whether he had an entry permit into Israel. The official said Rabi Arafah Rabi, 32, was hit by `a bullet to the head` at a checkpoint southeast of the city of Qalqilya

9. New Zealand thump holders Australia in Super 12 opener

• Devon Conway carried his bat with a majestic unbeaten 92 as New Zealand thrashed champions Australia by 89 runs in a rematch of last year`s final, opening the Super 12 stage with a bang at the Twenty20 World Cup on October 22, 2022.
