1. Dadu besieged by water; toll crosses 1,200 nationwide

• The water level in Dadu city surrounded on all four sides continued to rise on September 2, 2022 as the overall death toll from the devastating floods, which have affected millions across the country, crossed 1,200.
• The raised level is a consequence of a surge in the flow of water down Indus river, with monstrous floods leaving a trail of destruction in the country`s northern regions.
• Meanwhile, Sindh Chief Minister Murad Ali Shah told reporters the province was going through its worst floods, more destructive than even 2010 or 2011


2. Ministry of Defence disowns `unrecognised` veterans` bodies

• The Ministry of Defence on September 2, 2022 accused some military veterans` bodies of `masquerading as` representatives of retired servicemen and warned them of punitive action.
• `This office does not recognise or endorse the activities of certain associations of persons masquerading as (or claiming to be) ex-servicemen societies i.e. inter alia, Pakistan Ex-Servicemen Society (PESS) and Veterans of Pakistan (VoP) soliciting support and funds for charitable purposes, flood relief, public works or propagation of unwarranted ideas,` a statement issued by the defence ministry said.
• It said the associations were `neither recognised nor authorised, on behalf of the Armed Forces of Pakistan` to act as ex servicemen societies and claim association with the armed forces or its institutions


3. Floods destroyed crops over 0.9m acres in south Punjab

• As the government estimates put the destruction of the standing crops at around 900,000 acres by floods in south Punjab, it has launched a detailed survey to assess the loss of lives and properties, besides the direct or indirect impact of the calamity on the people.
• It has already exempted all flood-hit areas from the collection of Abiana and Maalia (per acre taxes on crops and irrigation water).
• `Around 900,000 acres of land have been affected by the massive floods and rains in various districts of south Punjab, while 40 people have been killed during the calamity. Another 37 people have been killed due to collapsing of houses,` Punjab Local Government & Community Development Department Minister Mian Mehmoodur Rasheed told reporters at a press conference here on Friday


4. UN bodies ramp up relief efforts, seek more funds

• As United Nations` agencies scaled up their response to the catastrophic floods in Pakistan, a renewed call for more funds have been raised to reach over three million children who are in desperate need of support.
• Unicef Pakistan Representative Abdullah Fadil on September 2, 2022 said that $37 million was required to extend the much-needed life-saving support to about 3.4 million children in the country.
• `We urgently need these funds and resources to allow us to continue to provide life-saving medical equipment, essential medicines, vaccines, safe drinking water, hygiene kits, mosquito nets,` Mr Fadil said


5. 50 trucks bring vegetables from Iran, Afghanistan

• Following a decision of the federal government to allow the private sector to import tomatoes and onions from Iran and Afghanistan, 50 trucks carrying the vegetables have crossed into the country through the Taftan and Chaman borders.
• `Over the last two days, 50 large-body trucks entered Pakistan through the Friendship Gates of Taf tan and Chaman,` a senior official of the Quetta Customs Collectorate told Dawn on Friday.
• He said more consignments of onions and tomatoes would reach the country in the coming days

6. UN inspectors to stay at Ukraine N-plant indefinitely to `ensure safety`

• United Nations inspectors spent a second day on September 2, 2022 at a Russian-held nuclear plant and at least two will remain on a permanent basis to ensure safety after the International Atomic Energy Agency said the site had been `violated` by the fighting in Ukraine.
• A 14-strong IAEA team visited the Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant in southern Ukraine on Thursday as global concern grew over its safety in a war raging ever closer to its six reactors.
• Russian troops seized control of the site _ Europe`s biggest atomic facility _in early March


7. Argentina`s VP escapes attempted assassination

• Argentina`s Vice President Cristina Fernandez de Kirchner escaped unharmed on Thursday after a man fired a loaded gun at her that failed to go off inches from her head.
• The attack, which the economy minister called an assassination attempt, comes at a time of acute political and social friction inside Argentina.
• It happened as Fernandez de Kirchner stepped out of a car outside her Buenos Aires home, where hundreds of supporters had gathered.
• Video footage showed a man holding a pistol next to her head. President Alberto Fernandez said the gun had been loaded with five bullets


8. Russia scraps gas pipeline reopening, deepens Europe`s problems

• Russia scrapped a Saturday deadline to resume flows via a major gas supply route to Europe after saying it had discovered a fault in the Nord Stream 1 pipeline during maintenance, deepening Europe`s difficulties in securing fuel for winter.
• Nord Stream 1, which runs under the Baltic Sea to supply Germany and others, had been due to resume operating on Saturday at 0100 GMT after a three-day halt for maintenance.
• But Gazprom, the state-controlled firm with a monopoly on Russian gas exports via pipeline, said on Friday it could not safely restart deliveries until it had fixed an oil leak found in a vital pipeline turbine. It did not give a new timeframe


9. Lanka`s ex-president returns from exile

• Sri Lanka`s depose d president Gotabaya Rajapaksa returned to the country on September 2, 2022, an airport official said, seven weeks after he fled in the face of angry protests over the island`s worst-ever economic crisis.
• Rajapaksa was garlanded with flowers by a welcoming party of ministers and politicians as he disembarked at the main international airport, the official said, adding that the 73-year-old leader had returned from Bangkok via Singapore


10. Pakistan crush HK to reach Asia Cup Super 4

• Mohammad Rizwan propelled Pakistan into the Asia Cup Super Four Stage as their bowlers skittled out minnows Hong Kong for a record low of 38 here at the Sharjah Cricket Stadium on September 2, 2022.
• Pakistan scored 193-2 in a must-win Twenty20 International with Rizwan (78 not out) and Fakhar Zaman (53) putting on 116 runs after being invited to bat first on a slow and low pitch.
• Spinners Shadab Khan and Mohammad Nawaz then shared seven wickets to bundle out Hong Kong in 10.4 overs and win by 155 runs Pakistan`s biggest T20 victory margin by runs.
• It was Hong Kong`s lowest T20 International total after their 69 against Nepal in 2014. It was also the lowest against Pakistan by any team after they bowled out West Indies for 60 in 2018
