6. Pakistan makes inadequate investments in human capital: WB

• Low human capital investments will limit the realisation of Pakistan`s ambition to become an upper middle-income country by 2047, says a new World Bank report.
• Pakistan`s Human Capital Index (HCI) value of 0.41 is low in both absolute and relative terms; lower than the South Asia average of 0.48, with Bangladesh at 0.46 and Nepal at 0.49.
• `If Pakistan continues on its current trajectory in human capital development, its GDP per capita would grow overall by a mere 18 per cent through 2047, the 100th anniversary of its founding, according to the Pakistan Human Capital Review

7. Hong Kong rejects US report criticising crackdown on freedoms

• Hong Kong on April 1, 2023 `firmly rejected` findings in a new US government report that said US interests had been threatened and that Beijing continued to `undermine` the rule of law and freedoms in the territory under a national security crackdown.
• The US` 2023 Hong Kong Policy Act Report, published by the US State Department, said Chinese and Hong Kong authorities `continued to use `national security` as a broad and vague basis to undermine the rule of law and protected rights and freedoms.` China imposed a national security law on Hong Kong in June 2020 without any local legislative or consultative process, outlawing crimes such as subversion with possible life imprisonment.
• Authorities say the law restored order after protracted pro-democracy protests in 2019, that called for, among other demands, full democracy


8. Syria top diplomat visits Egypt in first since war

• Egypt`s Foreign Minister Sameh Shoukry met with his Syrian counterpart Faisal Mekdad in Cairo on April 1, 2023, a first since Syria`s civil war broke out over a decade ago, Shoukry`s office said.
• The meeting comes amid amplified Arab engagement with the Damascus government which has been politically isolated in the region since the start of the Syria war and was expelled from the Cairo-based Arab League in 2011 over its bloody crackdown on prodemocracy demonstrations.
• Mekdad`s visit to Cairo is the `first in more than 10 years` for a Syrian top diplomat and saw a closed door meeting between the two ministers followed by discussions between the two countries` delegations, the Egyptian foreign ministry said.Several Arab countries rushed to Syria`s aid after a Feb 6 earthquake killed tens of thousands in the war-torn country and neighbouring Turkiye


9. Kyiv up in arms as Russia takes over UNSC presidency

• Russia has taken over the presidency of the UN Security Council, despite repeated requests from Kyiv to other members to block the move.
• The last time Moscow held the chair was in February 2022, whenits troops launched a full-scale invasion of Ukraine. The security council`s presidency rotates every month between 15 members.
• During its presidency, Russia would hold little influence on decisions but be in charge of the agenda


10. Nato stops short of opening its doors to India

• The Nato alliance is open to more engagement should India seek it, but the organisation is not seeking new members in the region, the US envoy to Nato said.
• America`s Nato Ambassador Julianne Smith also spoke of China`s increasing assertiveness in the region and how it has impacted the alliance`s approach to the Asia-Pacific region.
• `Nato has really shifted in a pretty noticeable way in terms of how it conducts outreach and engages with its partners in the Indo-Pacific,` she said at a virtual news briefing on Friday evening.
