6. Sindh declares public holiday today

• The Sindh government has declared a public holiday in the province on April 4, 2023 (today) on account of the death anniversary of the former Prime Minister Zulfikar Ali Bhutto.
• A notification issued by general administration and coordination department states: `The government of Sindh has been pleased to declare April 4, 2023 as a public holiday throughout the province of Sindh`


7. Home dept withdraws requisition for helipad upgrade

• The Punjab home department has withdrawn its demand for Rs87.344 million for the upgrade of helipad for the prime minister at Model Town, Lahore.
• The Punjab cabinet committee for legislative and business had earlier approved the release of funds for the upgrade of helipad having lights to enable the prime minister`s helicopter landing at the helipad in the night too.
• Sources say the prime minister`s secretariat had conveyed the demand to the chief minister`s secretariat


8. Drone downed, two killed in Israeli-Palestinian unrest

• Palestinian and Israeli forces battled in the air and on the ground on April 3, 2023, with a drone downed and missiles fired over Gaza, and two fighters shot dead in the West Bank, officials in the Palestinian territories said, as the army reported a raid targeting gun attack suspects.
• Palestinian fighters in the Gaza Strip said they fired missiles at an Israeli warplane after it shot their drone down. The violence followed a weekend of deadly incidents which ended a relative calm since the start Ramazan 10 days ago.
• In the West Bank city of Nablus, `two martyrs (were) shot by the occupation`, the Palestinian health ministry said. It later named them as Mohammed Abu Bakr and Mohammed al-Hallaq, without giving their ages


9. Malaysia scraps death penalty

• Malaysia`s parliament on April 3, 2023 passed sweeping legal reforms to remove the mandatory death penalty, trim the number of offences punishable by death, and abolish natural-life prison sentences, a move cautiously welcomed by rights groups.
• Malaysia has had a moratorium on executions since 2018, when it first promised to abolish capital punishment entirely.
• The government, however, faced political pressure from some parties and rowed back on the pledge a year later, saying it would retain the death penalty but allow courts to replace it with other punishments at their discretion


10. UK minister under fire for singling out Pakistani men

• British Home Secretary Suella Braverman`s remarks that British-Pakistani men `hold cultural values at odds with British values` have been criticised by political commentators and children`s charities as `inflammatory` and akin to initiating `race wars`.
• Ms Braverman came under fire when, during a Sky News interview about plans to tackle child sexual abuse, she spoke about `the predominance of British-Pakistani males who hold cultural values totally at odds with British values`.
• `[British-Pakistani men] see women in a demeaned, illegitimate way, and pursue an outdated and frankly heinous approach to the way we behave,` Ms Braverman commented after she was informed that a Home Office report in 2020 concluded that most child sexual abuse gangs are made up of white men under the age of 30, and that there was not enough evidence to suggest members of grooming gangs were disproportionately more likely to be Asian or black.
