1. Timeline issued after SC steps in to rescue Feb 8 poll date
A visibly disturbed Supreme Court bench suspended the Dec 13 Lahore High Court (LHC) order staying the appointment of district returning officers (DROs), returning officers (ROs) and assistant returning officers (AROs) from the executive, and ordered the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) to notify a schedule for the Feb 8, 2024 general elections by Friday night.
`Accordingly in the given circumstances and considering the constitutional and legal stipulation, the judgement of the LHC is hereby suspended, said an order dictated by Chief Justice of Pakistan (CJP) Qazi Faez Isa.
Other members of the three member bench were Justice Sardar Tariq Masood and Justice Syed Mansoor Ali Shah
2. LHC orders two-day `work from home` for private offices
The Lahore High Court on Friday ordered the Punjab caretaker government to issue a notification to private offices to allow employees to work from home for two days a week as a measure to control smog.
Government offices should also adopt the same policy if possible, Justice Shahid Karim observed while expressing dissatisfaction that the government had earlier ignored court recommendations in this regard. The judge issued the direction while hearing petitions seeking anti-smog measures
3. Five police, FC officials martyred in KP attacks
Five police and Frontier Constabulary (FC) officials were martyred and as many militants were killed in two attacks on law enforcement agencies in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa`s Tank and Khyber districts on Friday.
In the first attack, militants equipped with modern weapons stormed police headquarters in the KP`s southern district of Tank. Officials said the militants, including a suicide bomber, tried to enter the police office.
In the ensuing gun battle, three police officials were martyred and five militants were killed
4. COAS, Guterres `discuss Kashmir, Afghanistan`
Chief of Army Staff (COAS) Gen Asim Munir met UN Secretary-General António Guterres in New York on Friday and conveyed Pakistan`s concerns over the situation in Indian-held Kashmir and Afghanistan, diplomatic sources told Dawn.
Pakistan is particularly concerned about the Indian Supreme Court`s decision to endorse the merger of occupied Kashmir and wants the UN to fulfil its pledge to enable Kashmiris to decide their future through a plebiscite
5. Second border crossing opened to serve as Gaza lifeline
After weeks of pressure, Israel on Friday approved the `temporary` delivery of aid into Gaza via its Kerem Shalom border crossing.
The crossing had recently began inspecting shipments of aid bound for the territory, but the trucks still had to travel to Rafah afterwards to enter. The opening would allow Israel to maintain its commitments to permit the entry of 200 trucks of aid per day, while Rafah could only handle half of that traffic
