1. Police compound cleared as terror revisits Karachi

• Security forces cleared a five-storey police compound on the port city`s main thoroughfare in an hours-long operation during which three militants of the banned Tehreek-i-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) were killed while two policemen, one Rangers official and a citizen embraced martyrdom on February 17, 2023 evening.
• At least 19 men, mostly police and Rangers officials, sustained injuries in the exchange of fire with militants who stormed the heavily guarded Karachi Police Office after lobbing a hand grenade at its main entrance, police and hospital officials said.
• The outlawed TTP on the social media claimed responsibility for the latest ambush, which came as a grim reminder of attacks on Bannu CTD complex and Peshawar Police Lines mosque in recent months


2. PM vows maximum help to Turkish quake victims

• Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif visited earthquake-hit areas and victims on his second day of visit to Turkiye and vowed to continue providing maximum assistance to Ankara in its rehabilitation and reconstruction efforts.
• The prime minister expressed these views as he handed over relief goods, mainly winterised and fireproof tents, to Turkish officials during his visit to the south-eastern Turkish city of Adiyaman.
• Later, Mr Sharif left for Pakistan after completing the two-day visit aimed at conveying condolences to the Turkish people

3. TTP commander killed in clash with CTD

• A key commander of the banned Tehreek-i-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) was killed in an armed clash with the Punjab Counter Terrorism Department (CTD) at Kalabagh area of Mianwali city late on Thursday night.
• It was the second major attack by the TTP this month in Mianwali which shares the border with Khyber Pakhtunkhwa where the security forces were confronting with the same banned militant organisation.
• Earlier, in the first week of this month, the Mianwali police had averted a massive attack by TTP men on a police station


4. Covid-19 pandemic created 1.6m idle youth in Pakistan, says WB report

• A new World Bank report on the impact of Covid-19 on South Asia`s youth says the pandemic has created 1.6 million additional idle youth in Pakistan. The report says pre-school enrollment at the end of 2021 was down by more than 15 percentage points in Pakistan.
• Enrollment among Pakistani children between the ages of six and 14 dropped by six percentage points once schools reopened, and 7.6 million children in the country alone have dropped out of school.
• The new report, `Collapse and Recovery: How Covid Eroded Human Capital and What to Do About It` released on Thursday, presents the first comprehensive analysis of global data on the pandemic`s impact on young people at key developmental stages: early childhood (0-5 years), school age (6-14 years), and youth (1524 years). It finds that in South Asia, today`s students could lose up to 14.4 per cent of their future earnings due to Covid-19-induced education loss


5. Agreement for e-parking regime

• To enhance security and overcome corruption and vehicle parking issues, the Punjab Safe Cities Authority (PSCA) and the Lahore Parking Company signed a memorandum of understanding to launch a digitized parking project, the first of its kind in Lahore city.
• PSCA Chief Technology Officer Tariq Malik and Lahore Parking Company CEO Faisal Wasim signed the agreement at the Authority office here on Friday.
• The PSCA has developed a parking application for the Lahore Parking Company, a spokesperson for the authority said
