8. AI-supercharged neuro tech threatens mental privacy, warns Unesco
• The combination of `warp speed` advances in neurotechnology, such as brain implants or scans that can increasingly peek inside minds, and artificial intelligence poses a threat to mental privacy, Unesco warned on July 13, 2023.
• The UN`s agency for science and culture has started developing a global `ethical framework` to address human rights concerns posed by neurotechnology, it said at a conference in Paris
9. Ukraine receives first supply of cluster munitions
• Ukraine has received cluster munitions, a military spokesperson said on July 13, 2023, less than a week after the United States announced it would transfer such munitions to Ukrainian forces.
• Valeryi Shershen, a spokesman for the Tavria military command in southern Ukraine, confirmed a CNN report citing the commander of the Tavria forces as saying Ukraine had just received cluster munitions but had not used them yet
10. US approves first over-the-counter birth control pill
• The US Food and Drug Administration on July 13, 2023 approved the first over-the-counter contraceptive pill, paving the way for millions of women in the country to purchase birth control without prescription.
