1. Alvi okays NEC`s reconstitution

President Dr Arif Alvi has approved the reconstitution of the National Economic Council (NEC) under Article 156 of the Constitution, according to a statement issued by the Presidency.
The function of the NEC, as outlined in the article is to `review the overall economic condition of the country` and advise the federal and provincial governments, along with formulating financial, commercial, social and economic policies. The constitutional body was also responsible for devising strategies to promote equitable development and regional balance


2. Senate panel sees excessive billing as `national crisis`

Amid continued unrest over inflated power bills across the country, the Senate Standing Committee on Cabinet Secretariat on Friday termed the issue a national crisis.
Taking serious notice of the hike in electricity prices, the committee noted that a number of suicide cases linked to the excessive billing have been reported from different areas


3. Major among three martyred in gun battles

Three military personnel, including an officer, were martyred in separate attacks in North Waziristan and Khyber districts, according to the military`s media wing.
A statement by the Inter Services Public Relations (ISPR) said on Friday that two security personnel, including a major, were martyred during an intelligence based operation in Miramshah area of North Waziristan.
The operation was being carried out on the basis of intelligence reports about the presence of militants in the area


4. Poliovirus detected again in Rawalpindi sewage

A poliovirus was found for the second time in a month in Rawalpindi district during a sewage sampling carried out by the World Health Organisation (WHO).
According to an official of the District Health Authority, the poliovirus was found in a sample collected from a nullah at Safdarabad near Pirwadhai. The area is located in the middle of Rawalpindi and Islamabad


5. Inflation, SOEs, floating debt risks to fiscal outlook: MoF

The Ministry of Finance (MoF) has highlighted policy implementation, higher sovereign guarantees and poor performance of state-owned entities (SOEs) as potential risks and uncertainties that could impact the country`s fiscal outlook while record inflation rates posed heightened risks to the country`s external stability.
In its latest Fiscal Risk Statement (FRS) 2023-24, the ministry has noted that federal government exposure to SOEs, in the form of outstanding stock of loans and guarantees, stood at 9.7pc of GDP in FY21, and public and publicly guaranteed debt stock reached 78.4pc of GDP at the end of FY22

6. Move to link US aid to Pakistan with democracy

A Republican lawmaker has introduced an amendment to the House of Representatives` annual appropriations legislation that would cut off funds to Pakistan to discourage the `crackdown on political dissent`.
Republicans are a majority in the House.
The amendment, proposed by Tennessee Republican Andy Ogles, would bar the US Department of Defence from providing assistance to Pakistan in the wake of an ongoing crackdown by the country`s military establishment and its civilian allies

7. Thai ex-PM`s jail term commuted to one year

Thailand`s king has commuted former prime minister Thaksin Shinawatra`s eight-year prison sentence to one year, the royal gazette said on Friday, a day after the billionaire submitted a request for pardon.
The country`s most famous politician returned to Thailand last week in a dramatic homecoming after 15 years abroad in self-exile to avoid jail time after he was ousted by the military in 2006


8. Four Armenian troops killed in clash with Azeris

Armenia and Azerbaijan said on Friday that they had sustained casualties in fighting around their common border, northwest of the breakaway region of Nagorno-Karabakh.
Armenia`s Defence Ministry said four of its servicemen had been killed and another wounded in shelling near the border villages of Sotk and Norabak. Azerbaijan said Armenia had struck its positions across the border in the Kalbajar region using drones, wounding three servicemen


9. African children `least able to cope` with climate risks, says UN

Children in Africa are exceptionally vulnerable to climate change but are `woefully` ignored by those responsible for funding the fight against the crisis, the United Nations said on Friday.
Africa a continent of 1.2 billion people is home to some of the countries least responsible for carbon emissions but is hit disproportionately hard by droughts, flooding, storms and heatwaves. Children in 48 of the 49 countries assessed are at `high or extremely high risk` of climate shocks, the Unicef said in a report titled Time to Act


10. Nasa spots new crater on Moon

Nasa has spotted a small new crater on the Moon that was likely caused by a Russian probe crash landing on the surface around two weeks ago.
The finding was made by the Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter (LRO) by comparing before and after images of the estimated impact point, provided by Russian space agency Roscosmos.
The Luna-25 probe crashed on Aug 19
