The paper of Pakistan affairs in CSS consists of three major parts: pre-partition, post-partition and the current developments. Pragmatically, each part warrants distinct, clinical and comprehensive approach. Today, I have received a lot queries regarding time mismanagement and study plane. The following are the golden principles of attempting Pakistan affairs paper in CSS.

I. Synthesize information by making an outline

II. Formulate a thesis that answers the question.

1. Cover the topics which are common to both subjects first they are related to Pakistan. By doing this you can tackle both papers with single revision.

2. In Current Affairs syllabus, paper of 60 marks would be from Pakistan related topics in course outlines portion IPakistan’s Domestic Affairs” has 20 marks and “Pakistan’s External Affairs” has 40 marks. Try to cover maximum topics from them.

3. For Current Affairs the easy way to cover topics is not to read in detail but just type the name of topic and go to the news tab in Google search, read between three to five recent news on every topic and that is enough.

4. After covering Pakistan related topics, all or maximum number of them, upto your satisfaction, pick between 5 to 8 topics which you think are the most important ones from the rest of the portion on “Global Issues” and do the same practice mentioned in point 3.

5. After this revise important facts and figures of recent economic survey of Pakistan.

6. Then prepare the MCQs from past papers or any good book you have for MCQs on current Affairs / General Knowledge.

7. On the next day, for Pakistan Affairs most of the revision is already complete while revising for Current Affairs, only focus on remaining part which is topic one of the syllabus “Ideology of Pakistan etc”

8. Prepare MCQs afterwards and anything which you deem very important.

Good Luck!

CSS Current Affairs Paper Attempt Techniques (By: Saeed Wazir)

Current Affairs in CSS and PMS need innovative, critical and comprehensive approach. History and unnecessary information tend to overshadow the essence of issues primarily of contemporary nature. It calls for fresh and current events based approach rather than philosophizing past and history.

1. Strategies to ace current affairs paper

i. Understanding the questions holistically

Current affairs topics are generally open-ended; do not have a planned ending, so it may develop in several ways. They are teeming with pregnant meanings, having two dimensions i.e. intellectual and practical. Unfortunately, due to lack of clinical and multi-dimensional understanding and knowledge, mostly candidates come up with unproductive work instead of balance between different dimensions. There appears to be a marked disconnect in cognitive abilities to handle a subject matter skillfully, rendering the whole exercise patchy and unconvincing.

by: Malik Hassan Ali (CSS-2018 Written Qualifier)

  1. From part one of “General Science” prepare portion of Physical sciences topic wise but very briefly like four to five lines about every topic and sub topics within. The easier way to do is to use google type each topic/sub topic’s name and read the first link which appears on it as a result of search, in written form, read just first paragraph or few lines about it if not satisfied by the link then directly go to Wikipedia’s link about topic and read not more than first paragraph about that topic/sub topic. Not to burden your mind with trivial/excessive details.
  2. Prepare the portion of biological and environmental sciences likewise.
  3. Prepare only one from food sciences or IT portion on the pattern shared above.
  4. Or any four of the five main divisions can be prepared from physical, biological, environmental, food sciences and IT. (It is better to leave the one having least sub topics but best to prepare all five of them that is up-to you what time you are left with)
  5. From part two of “General Ability” your final revision should only include preparing for the basic mathematics portion try to use past papers in it and check what type of questions are coming from them try to memorize all formulas afresh specially ratio, proportions, rates, percentage, angles, triangles etc.
  6. If you have consulted and prepared from a good book for rest of the General Ability like “Test of Reasoning by Edgar Thorpe” you don’t need to revise other sections of this portion. The things you learned will retain in your mind even well after CSS papers for other competitive exams as well, and if you haven’t prepare that portion no need to bother your mind with these topics at eleventh hour they wont be covered in full. Just leave them. Only you have to score some extra in other two papers of General Knowledge (Pakistan Affairs and Current Affairs) to make up for this deficiency later.
  7. Move to MCQs portion then, for that consult past papers and if you have any good book for science related MCQs that will do but if you don’t have it arrange from somewhere general science books of class 6th, 7th and 8th (all or as many of them as you can arrange) and just revise all the MCQs of the exercises of those books plus the summaries given at the end of the chapters.
  8. Take proper care of your sleep it is the most important thing during exams.

Good Luck!

1.Precis Making Rules

Go through all the rules of precis making.

2. Conversion of Narration Rules

Go through all the rules of conversion of narration once again.

3. No need to prepare for things like paragraph comprehension, translation, sentence correction and punctuation etc you will do great in them.

4. After doing the above things dedicate all the remaining time on preparation of vocabulary for that no need to read words rather go to Youtube and listen/watch various CSS related vocabulary videos as much as you can in the left over time. The chances of retention via watching+listening+reading a video are far greater than only reading through any book or list. Watch a video twice if you think it has very important words but not more than that. Remember these solid 30 marks (20 for objectives and 10 for pair of words/idioms) which are related to vocabulary are crucial on how well you perform in the paper. Try to take maximum marks out of them.

5. Have faith in Allah and your hard work, you will perform well.

6. Take a good 7 to 8 hours sleep before exam. It is of paramount importance to go in paper with fresh mind.

Good Luck!

Types of CSS ESSAYS By Mureed Hussain Jasra (CSP)

Types of Essays:

An essay is a piece of writing that methodically analyses and evaluates a topic, a question or an issue. Fundamentally, an essay is designed to get your academic opinion on a particular matter. Many students get confused about the word opinion in essay writing, and think that essay writing should just stick to report the facts and forget about opinion altogether. However, there are major differences between an academic opinion, based on strong evidences, and a personal opinion, based on emotion and feeling without concrete evidence and logic, and it is important to comprehend these when you are putting together an essay. Writing a good and comprehensive essay is not about simply surveying and re-telling existing ideas. Instead, a good essay takes into account various opinions and points of view and puts forward an argument that reflects the writer’s informed opinion and stance. Furthermore; there are many kinds of essays which differ from one another on the basis of formation of outline, selection of words, presentation of facts, organization of arguments, composition of paragraphs, forms of tenses and description or narration of ideas and events. Writing different types of essays effectively has become critical and key requirement to get good marks in essay writing. Students must remember that every type of essay has its own requirements and their different approaches can be obviously seen in structure. There are over a dozen types of essays, so it is easy to get confused. However, essentially there are four major types of essays which are included in CSS. These include;

1. Factual or Social Essays:

What is an Essay? By Mureed Hussain Jasra (CSP) | CSS Essays Tips

An essay is a piece of academic writing that generally consists of 1500 and 5000 words.

This is an intellectual exploration of a topic to find different arguments and evidences to develop the writer’s perspective, opinion or stance. The word essay originally means an attempt or a try at some topic, but technically it usually means a comprehensive piece of writing on a specific topic.

The purpose and given time of an essay determines its length and for students of CSS and PMS its length is 2500-3000 words or 20-25 paragraphs or 250-300 sentences. Every essay has four major portions which include outline, introduction, body paragraphs and conclusion.

Your examiner marks your essay, making comments not only about what you have said (content and arguments) but also the way you have written or organized all this in your essay (grammar, expression, structure). Your examiner will grade your essay too, so that you can see where you stand in relation to whatever standards apply to your examination.

However, one should not see essay writing is simply compilation of some information on some given topics without any coherence and logic but there should be logical connection among ideas, sentences and paragraphs. In addition to the above, an essay consists of three major parts:
