1. Hurriedly called assembly session to pick Punjab CM

• Political maneuverings in the government and opposition camps escalated on April 1, 2022 evening when the top slot of the largest province fell vacant with the acceptance of resignation of Chief Minister Sardar Usman Buzdar by the governor amid legal hitches, followed by immediate summoning of the Punjab Assembly session on Saturday morning for chief minister`s election.
• The Punjab government de-notified CM Buzdar after the acceptance of his resignation but in the same notification allowed him `to continue to hold office until his successor enters upon the office`. In an array of notifications, the provincial government also denotified all the 37 provincial ministers, five advisers to the chief minister and five special assistants to the chief minister


2. US `clearly distanced` itself from Pakistan, says Mullen

• The United States has `clearly distanced` itself from Pakistan, former US military chief Mike Mullen said as the White House and the State Department publicly reject claims of their involvement in Pakistan`s domestic politics.
• `It is difficult, difficult to say,`said Admiral Mullen when asked to describe Washington`s relations with Pakistan, which was once a close US ally in the war against terror and during the cold war.
• `I think we have clearly distanced ourselves from Pakistan over the last decade and Pakistan has more and more fallen under the umbrella of China,` he told VOA Urdu Service in Washington this week


3. Exports cross $23bn mark

• Pakistan`s merchandise exports posted a growth of 25 per cent in the first nine months of the current fiscal year from a year ago, showing data released by the commerce ministry on April 1, 2022.
• In absolute terms, the export proceeds reached $23.332 billion in July-March from $18.688bn in the corresponding period last year. The increase in export is mainly due to the massive depreciation of the rupee along with several support measures.
• `Our exports are in line with our targets & we expect to achieve our yearly target` Commerce Adviser Abdul Razak Dawood said on April 1, 2022. The government has projected the annual export target for commodities at $31.2bn and services at $7.5bn.
• The export proceeds in March grew 17.3pc to $2.773bn from $2.365bn in the same month last year. The average monthly export proceeds hover between $2.5bn to $2.8bn.


4. Zalmay offers to help better Pak-US ties

• Former US special envoy for Afghanistan Zalmay Khalilzad on April 1, 2022 offered help to Army Chief Gen Qamar Bajwa in improving bilateral relations.
• A statement issued by the Inter-Services Public Relations after a meeting between Gen Bajwa and Amb Khalilzad said the former US official promised to `play his role` for bettering the ties between the two countries.
• The ISPR said that besides Afghanistan various facets of bilateral cooperation were discussed during the meeting


5. Three GB officers inducted in Police Service of Pakistan

• In a first, three police officers from Gilgit Baltistan have been appointed as superintendent of police in Pakistan.
• According to a notification issued by the Establishment Division, Cabinet Secretariat, Islamabad the other day, the government of has appointed three officers, including Tanveerul Hasan, Mirza Hasan and Ishaq Hussain, grade 18 officers of the GB police, as SPs in the Police Service of Pakistan in pursuance of the Rule 7 of the Police Service (Composition, Cadre and Seniority) Rules, 1985.
• The government has earmarked 10 posts of SPs for the officers from GB for appointment in Pakistani police

6. Moscow accuses Kyiv of air strike on fuel depot

• Moscow on April 1, 2022 accused Kyiv of carrying out its first air strike on Russian soil, in a new blow to hopes of any de-escalation in President Vladimir Putin`s war against Ukraine.
• Peace talks between Ukrainian and Russian officials resumed via video, but Moscow warned that the helicopter attack on a fuel depot in the town of Belgorod would hamper negotiations.
• Kyiv would neither confirm nor deny it was behind the attack, with Foreign Minister Dmytro Kuleba saying he did `not possess all the military information`


7. Backing Russia will have consequences, EU tells China

• Top EU officials warned China`s leader Xi Jinping at a virtual summit on April 1, 2022 that any attempt to aid Russia`s war in Ukraine could hurt business ties between the two economic superpowers.
• The EU and US worry that Beijing`s failure to condemn the invasion means it could be willing to help the Kremlin sidestep the impact of sanctions or even supply hardware to aid the war effort.
• `No European citizen would understand any support to Russia`s ability to wage war. Moreover, it would lead to a major reputational damage for China here in Europe,` European Commission chief Ursula von der Leyen said


8. First audio recordings on Mars reveal two speeds of sound

• The first audio recordings from Mars reveal a quiet planet with occasional gusts of wind where two different speeds of sound would have a strange delayed effect on hearing, scientists said on April 1, 2022.
• After NASA`s Perseverance rover landed on Mars in February last year, its two microphones started recording, allowing scientists to hear what it is like on the Red Planet for the first time.
• In a study published in the Nature journal on Friday, the scientists gave their first analysis of the five hours of sound picked up by Perseverance`s microphones


9. Bangalzai, Yasir lead Balochistan to Pakistan Cup Triumph

• Captain Yasir Shah and emerging batter Abdul Wahid Bangalzai led Balochistan to a thumping win in the Pakistan Cup final against defending champions Khyber Pakhtunkhwa at the Multan Cricket Stadium on April 1, 2022.
• It was the side`s maiden title since the inception of the new domestic structure in 2019 as they denied Quaid-e-Azam Trophy and National T20 Cup winners KP a treble.
• Bangalzai, 19, smashed 80 off 77 balls (nine fours and two sixes) to help Balochistan over the line with 112 balls to spare after Yasir bagged four wickets to restrict KP to a paltry 171.
• It was, however, another 19-year-old Haseebullah`s 45 of f 58 (six fours), that set the platform for Bangalzai and Pakistan discard Asad Shafiq (21 off 33) to finish the job for Balochistan. The duo put up a 70-run unbeaten partnership for the third wicket
