1. Shehbaz made premier as `opposition` forms govt

• For the first time in the history of Pakistan`s parliament, the endre opposition cohort in the National Assembly crossed over to the government aisle following the election of Shehbaz Sharif as the new prime minister, on April 11, 2022.
• Mr Sharif, who later took oath as the country`s premier, secured 174 votes in a one-sided election in the National Assembly following the en masse resignation of Pakistan Tehreek-i-Insaf (PTI) members.
• According to the National Assembly website, Mr Sharif will be the 24th prime minister of the country not counting caretaker set ups.
• PML-N`s Ayaz Sadiq presided over Monday`s proceedings after Deputy Speaker Qasim Suri, who was initially chairing the sitting, said his conscience did not allow him to conduct the session


2. US says it values ties with Pakistan

• The United States said on April 11, 2022 that it values its `longstanding` cooperation with Pakistan but will not like to comment on the regime change in Islamabad.
• `We are closely following developments in Pakistan,` a spokesperson for the US State Department told Dawn when asked for comment on Shehbaz Sharif`s election as the country`s new prime minister.
• `The United States has no position on and does not comment on Pakistan`s internal process,` the US official added when reminded how during the weekend the Pakistani parliament voted out Imran Khan and elected an opposition leader as the new prime minister


3. Shah Farman quits as KP governor

• Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Governor Shah Farman on April 11, 2022 resigned after election of Shehbaz Sharif as the Prime Minister of Pakistan.
• The outgoing governor had already decided that he would relinquish his office once Pakistan Muslim League Nawaz leader was elected the country`s chief executive.
• `The governor has signed his resignation [letter] and dispatched it to President of Pakistan Dr Arif Alvi,` a statement issued from the Governor`s House said


4. ECP issues delimitation schedule, freezes new admin units

• The Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) on April 11, 2022 announced the delimitation schedule for the National Assembly and provincial assemblies for the next general elections.
• As a first step, the boundaries of administrative units across the country have been frozen and the delimitation committees for all the provinces and the federal capital will be formed by April 16.
• The schedule came days after the ECP had expressed inability to conduct general elections before October, citing legal hitches including absence of delimitation, an essential prerequisite for polls, inviting scathing criticism from the then ruling Pakistan Tehreek-i-Insaf


5. Opposition withdraws no-trust motion against KP CM

• The Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Assembly on April 11, 2022 expressed confidence in Chief Minister Mahmood Khan after the opposition withdrew its no-trust motion against him as anti-US sloganeering and rumpus marred the proceedings. Eighty-eight out of 94 lawmakers of the ruling PTI reposed their confidence in the leader of the house. MPA Sultan Mohammad Khan moved the resolution.
• PPP MPA Nighat Yasmin Orakzai fell conscious while rushing towards the seat of Minister for Social Welfare Anwar Zeb Khan. Chief Minister Mahmood Khan tried to stop her; however, she fell unconscious on her way and was taken away on a stretcher for first aid to Lady Reading Hospital.

6. Monument dedicated to martyred policemen

• A martyrs` monument has been erected at the Police Lines Headquarters Rawalpindi.
• It has eight pillars dedicated to different units of the police and is surrounded by a central wall emblem with the Punjab police logo and two Quranic verses on each side.
• The pillars are built in black granite four on each side of the 170 feet wide and 90 feet deep structure with marble stairs.
• The eight pillars indicate the police units Rawalpindi police, City Traffic Police, Elite Force, Special Protection Unit (SPU), Dolphin Squad, Punjab Highway Patrol (PHP), Counter-Terrorism Department (CTD) and Khidmat Markaz. The local government and community division department provided an architect to design and build the monument


7. Bill for home-based workers wins unanimous nod in Balochistan PA

• The Balochistan Assembly on April 11, 2022 passed the Home-Based Workers Bill aimed at protecting the rights of women and other people involved in the cottage industry in the province.
• Providing legal protection to people involved in home-based work was a long-time demand of civil society and various organisations.
• Parliamentary Secretary on Law and Parliamentary Affairs Dr Rubaba Khan Buledi moved the bill in the house. Members from both sides of the aisle supported the bill and the house passed it without any opposition.
• The house also adopted the Balochistan Universities Draf t Bill, 2022, with a majority vote. The bill was moved by Minister for Education Mir Naseebullah Marri


8. Italy signs gas deals with Algeria to reduce reliance on Russia

• Italian Prime Minister Mario Draghi announced a deal on April 11, 2022 to boost gas deliveries from energy heavyweight Algeria, as he steps up efforts to reduce Rome`s heavy reliance on Russian imports.
• Addressing journalists after meeting President Abdelmadjid Tebboune, Draghi told journalists the two governments had signed a preliminary deal on energy cooperation.
• `There is also a deal between ENI and Sonatrach to boost gas exports to Italy,` he said, referring to the Italian energy giant and Algeria`s state hydrocarbons firm


9. Pro-Russia separatists claim control of Mariupol port

• A pro-Russia rebel leader said on April 11, 2022 that separatist forces in eastern Ukraine have taken control of the port of the strategic city of Mariupol.
• `Regarding the port of Mariupol, it is already under our control,` Denis Pushilin, leader of the separatists in the breakaway Donetsk region, said in televised remarks.
• Russian troops have for over a month besieged Mariupol on the shores of the Sea of Azov.
• Thousands of civilians are believed to have died there since the start of Russia`s military operation in Ukraine


10. UN envoy makes first visit to Yemen after truce

• UN special envoy Hans Grundberg started his first visit to Yemen`s rebel-held capital on April 11, 2022, following an April 2 ceasefire that the country`s warring parties have accused each other of violating.
• The Swedish diplomat is scheduled to meet Huthi rebel officials during his first Sanaa visit since taking office in September.
• `He is looking forward to engaging with Ansar Allah (Huthi) leadership on implementing and strengthening the truce and discussing the way forward,` Grundberg`s office said in a tweet announcing his arrival
