1. Indian offer led to `quiet` talks on all major issues
• India approached Pakistan in December 2020 with an offer to reduce tension and offered backchannel talks on all outstanding issues, including Jammu and Kashmir, and Pakistan reciprocated favourably, fresh information emanating from official quarters has confirmed.
• The Indian offer was discussed among the top Pakistan leadership and a decision was taken to explore all avenues for a peaceful settlement of conflicts by engaging in quiet talks, according to high-level official sources
• India proposed that the two countries start talking on all outstanding issues side by side instead of lumping them together in a composite dialogue, said the sources. The Pakistani leadership has agreed to explore all options.
2. Medical supplies offered to Delhi
• Pakistan on April 24, 2021 offered medical supplies to India that has been struggling to cope with an overwhelming wave of Covid-19 while its leaders expressed solidarity with Indian people.
• After Prime Minister Imran Khan`s tweet praying for the `speedy recovery` of the Indian people affected by the virus and calling for cooperation in fight against the pandemic, Foreign Minister Shah Mahmood Qureshi took to Twitter to announce that India had been offered assistance
3. Roshan digital accounts attract historic $1bn
• Inflows of foreign exchange through the Roshan Digital Account (RDA) crossed the $1 billion mark creating space for the architects of the products to introduce more such attractions for the overseas Pakistanis during this month.
• `The fund inflows through RDA have crossed $1bn in just over seven months, the State Bank in a tweet stated, adding that an event was being planned to thank the overseas Pakistanis for their extraordinary response to the initiative.
• Prime Minister Imran Khan also appreciated the overseas Pakistanis and the State Bank of Pakistan (SBP) for their support to improve the country`s foreign exchange inflows
4. Action taken against 57 private medical, dental colleges
• The Pakistan Medical Commission (PMC) has taken action against 57 private medical and dental colleges for violation of admission regulations after receiving hundreds of complaints against 69 institutions.
• Some of the colleges had admitted students against merit while others had not mentioned the marks of interview. Also, some colleges had admitted students before even displaying merit list and others had received fee of all the five years in advance.
• To address these violations, admissions to some of the colleges will be re advertised so that merit is followed while others have been directed to return overcharged fees, according to PMC vice president Ali Raza
5. Iran bans flights to and from India, Pakistan
• Iran`s civil aviation agency banned all flights to and from India and Pakistan because of the dramatic surge in coronavirus cases in the two nations, state run IRNA news agency said on April 24, 2021.
• IRNA said the decision taken by the health ministry took effect on Saturday at midnight.
• Mohammad Hassan Zibakhsh, spokesman for Iran`s Civil Aviation Organisation noted there were no routine flights between Iran and India and flights were operated occasionally
6. Virus surge in India drives record global daily cases
• The world hit a new daily record of coronavirus cases due mainly to an explosion of the virus in India, but Covid jabs also approached one billion globally on April 24, 2021, offering hope after months of pandemic misery.
• Cases topped 893,000 worldwide on Friday, with more than a third of the infections in India.
• Authorities there announced 332,730 new cases on Friday and another 346,786 on Saturday, also a record for a single country since the start of the pandemic, according to a count
7. Biden recognises Armenian genocide, defying Turkey in watershed
• US President Joe Biden on April 24, 2021 recognised the 1915 killings of Armenians by Ottoman forces as genocide, a watershed moment for descendants of the hundreds of thousands of dead as he defied decades of pressure by Turkey.
• Biden became the first US president to use the word genocide in a statement on the anniversary, a day after informing Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan of the decision and seeking to limit the furor from the Nato ally.
• `We remember the lives of all those who died in the Ottoman-era Armenian genocide and recommit ourselves to preventing such an atrocity from ever again occurring,` Biden said
8. Asean leaders say consensus reached on ending Myanmar crisis
• Southeast Asian leaders said they had agreed on a plan with Myanmar`s junta chief on April 24, 2021 to end the crisis in the violence-hit nation, but he did not explicitly respond to demands to halt the killing of civilian protesters.
• `It`s beyond our expectation,` Malaysian Prime Minister Muhyiddin Yassin told reporters after the leaders` meeting of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (Asean) that was also attended by Myanmar`s Senior General Min Aung Hlaing.
9. Indonesia navy declares lost sub with 53 aboard sunk
• Debris has been recovered from a missing Indonesian submarine, the country`s navy said on April 24, 2021, suggesting that the stricken vessel could have broken apart after sinking with 53 crew aboard.
• The development dashed already slim hopes of rescuing the sailors alive after their oxygen reserves were understood to have run out earlier in the day.
• Warships, planes and hundreds of military personnel have been searching for the KRI Nanggala 402 since it disappeared off the coast of Bali early Wednesday.
10. Israeli jets hit targets in Gaza Strip after missile attacks
• Israeli warplanes struck the Gaza Strip early on April 24, 2021 after repeated salvos of rocket fire into Israel followed a second night of clashes between Palestinians and police in Israeli-annexed east Jerusalem.
• Thirty-six rockets were launched, the Israeli army said, the most in a single night this year, after Gaza`s Islamist rulers Hamas voiced support for the east Jerusalem protests, which were fuelled by a Thursday march by far-right Jews.
• Washington said it was `deeply concerned` by the escalating violence, while the European Union appealed for restraint
