1. Punjab to provide free education till graduation

• Punjab Chief Minister Parvez Elahi on August 14, 2022 announced free education up to graduation in state-run educational institutes.
• After hoisting the national flag at a ceremony held at Lahore Fort to celebrate Independence Day, Mr Elahi said he had made education free up to matriculation in his previous tenure as chief minister.
• Addressing the ceremony, he paid rich tribute to the martyrs of armed forces and police who had laid down their lives in defence of their country.
• While praising Chief of Army Staff General Qamar Javed Bajwa, Mr Elahi remarked that the COAS` services to eradicate terrorism from the country deserved praise.


2. Two soldiers martyred in Harnai shootout

• Amid an increase in militant attacks on security forces, two Pakistan Army personnel embraced martyrdom and two others received injuries in separate incidents in Balochistan.
• In a statement on Sunday, the Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR), the army`s media affairs wing, said the terrorists assaulted a check post in the Khost area of the Harnai district resulting in the martyrdom of two soldiers and injuries to an officer as a result of heavy firing.
• `Having successfully repulsed the distant fire raid, the escaping terrorists were pursued into the nearby mountains,` the statement said, adding, `As a follow up, during an encircling effort to cut off fleeing terrorists, a heavy exchange of Kre took place between terrorists and a security forces patrol as well


3. President confers awards for meritorious services

• President Dr Arif Alvi on August 14, 2022 conferred civil and military honours and awards on citizens and foreign dignitaries for excellence and services in different fields.
• The awardees, who also include personnel from the armed forces, will receive their awards and medals on March 23.

4. Carbon pricing to be enforced under tax policy, ADB assured

• The government has given a commitment to the Asian Development Bank (ADB) to approve and commence with effect from January 1, 2022 the implementation of National Carbon Pricing Strategy under the country`s overall tax policy to raise tax-to-GDP ratio to 10pc by FY2025 from 8.5pc now.
• This is part of about $200 million loan Resource Mobilisation Reforms programme of the ADB that has to begin on January 1, 2023 and be completed by end-March 2024, primarily by the Federal Board of Revenue. Under the programme, the government would also expand the track and trace system (TTS) for improved tax recoveries to large number of sectors including petroleum, pharmaceuticals and beverages


5. Rs75 commemorative banknote marks nation`s pledge to tackle climate change

• To mark the country`s 75 years of independence, the State Bank of Pakistan (SBP) on August 14, 2022 issued a Rs75 commemorative banknote featuring not only the portraits of Quaid-i-Azam Mohammad Ali Jinnah, Allama Iqbal, Mohtarma Fatima Jinnah and Sir Syed Ahmed Khan but also highlighting nation`s commitment to address climate change.
• The green and white currency note has tones of yellow, where the green represents growth and development and derives inspiration from the country`s Islamic identity and the white colour emphasises religious diversity of the population, according to the SBP.
• `The Markhor and Deodar trees pictured on the reverse of the Banknote highlight our national commitment to address climate change and its repercussions,` a statement issued by the SBP mentioned

6. Republicans fear US rivals could exploit ex-Afghan commandos

• Former Afghan security personnel with sensitive knowledge of US operations left behind by the American evacuation operation are vulnerable to recruitment or coercion by Russia, China and Iran, Republican lawmakers said on August 14, 2022, noting that President Joe Biden`s administration failed to prioritise evacuating them.
• `This is especially true given reports that some former Afghan military personnel have fled to Iran, minority Republicans of the US House Foreign Affairs Committee said in a report on the first anniversary of the Taliban takeover of Kabul


7. Kuwait names first envoy to Iran in over six years

• Kuwait has appointed an ambassador to Iran, both countries said on August 14, 2022, more than six years after recalling its top envoy to Tehran in solidarity with Saudi Arabia after it severed ties with the Islamic Republic in 2016.
• Ambassador Bader Abdullah Al-Munaikh handed his credentials to Iranian Foreign Minister Hossein Amirabdollahian in Tehran on Saturday, Iran`s foreign ministry said on its website.
• Kuwait`s foreign ministry confirmed Munaikh was appointed envoy to Iran.
• Iran already has an ambassador in Kuwait


8. Three Syrian soldiers killed in Israeli air strikes

• Israeli air strikes on Syria killed three soldiers and wounded three others on August 14, 2022, state media said, after the latest such incident in the war-torn country.
• `The aggression led to the death of three soldiers, the wounding of three others,` Syria`s official news agency said, quoting a military source.
• Since civil war broke out in Syria in 2011, Israel has carried out hundreds of air strikes inside the country, targeting government positions as well as allied Iran-backed forces and Hezbollah fighters


9. Iraq`s judiciary dismisses Sadr`s demand to dissolve parliament

• Iraq`s judiciary said on August 14, 2022 it lacks the authority to dissolve parliament as demanded by Montada Sadr, who is engaged in an escalating standoff with political rivals.
• Followers of Sadr, in defiance of his rival and pro-Iran Coordination Framework, have been staging a sit-in protest at Iraq`s parliament.
• In the latest twist to the political turmoil, the firebrand cleric has urged the judiciary to dissolve parliament by the end of this week to pave the way for new legislative elections


10. US lawmakers land in Taiwan on heels of Pelosi`s visit

• A delegation of US lawmakers arrived in Taiwan on August 14, 2022 for a two-day trip during which they will meet President Tsai Ing-wen, the second high-level group to visit Taiwan while there are military tensions between the self-ruled island and China.
• Beijing, which claims democratically governed Taiwan as its own territory, has conducted military drills around the island to express its anger over US House of Representatives Speaker Nancy Pelosi`s visit to Taipei in early August.
• The de facto US embassy in Taipei said the delegation is being led by Senator Ed Markey, who is being accompanied by four House lawmakers on what it described as part of a larger visit to the Indo-Pacific region.
