1. `Unprovoked` shelling by Afghan forces kills seven at Chaman

• At least seven people lost their lives and 16 others suffered injuries on December 11, 2022 in Chaman, which came under heavy gunfire and artillery shelling by Afghan border forces, the military`s media wing said.
• Pakistani troops retaliated against the `unprovoked and indiscriminate` fire, the Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR) said in a statement, without giving details of any losses on the other side.
• The ISPR described the incident as `uncalled-for aggression` and said Pakistani troops had given a `befitting` but `measured response` and avoided targeting civilians on the other side


2. $900m okayed for Chilean firm to exit Reko Diq

• After the Supreme Court endorsed a settlement deal worth over $6.5 billion last week, the government on December 11, 2022 approved a payment of more than $900 million to the Chilean firm Antofagasta over six years to exit the Reko Dig project.
• The committee also green-lighted about$1.91bn shareholder financing by state owned enterprises (SOEs) to take the gold and copper mining project forward.
• The decisions were taken at a special meeting of the Economic Coordination Committee (ECC) of the cabinet presided over by Finance Minister Ishaq Dar through video link from Lahore to meet deadlines for an out-of-court settlement with the Tethyan Copper Company to avoid a looming $10bn international arbitration award. The `definitive agreements` are ready to be signed by Dec 15 under the settlement deal


3. Rs250m announced for flood-affected polio workers

• The government has announced Rs250 million as compensation for 12,500 polio workers who were affected by the recent catastrophic floods.
• In a statement, federal Health Minister Abdul Qadir Patel hailed the services of polio workers, who despite suffering losses due to the catastrophic floods, continued to assist with relief activities.
• `I salute your courage and passion.
• Despite suffering losses, you came to the aid of your fellow citizens and supported the government in flood relief operations,` he said

4. ADB approves $189m to restore damaged transmission lines

• The Asian Development Bank (ADB) has approved $189 million loan for construction of high-voltage transmission infrastructure and procurement of materials required for asset management and reduction of transmission system constraints.
• The loan will support National Transmission and Despatch Company (NTDC) in meeting growing electricity demand efficiently and reliably at the load centres of Punjab, Sindh and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa through the construction of the transmission network and augmentation of existing substations.
• In addition, the equipment and goods to be procured for the project will be used to restore transmission lines damaged by recent floods and other damages identified in the disaster recovery framework under preparation by the government with support from the ADB, World Bank, EU and the UN


5. Police Order 2002 enforced in Islamabad after 20 years

• After Punjab, the Police Order 2002 has also been enforced in Islamabad Capital Territory (ICT), following the orders of Supreme Court of Pakistan and the Islamabad High Court (IHC), removing the 20-year-old controversies surrounding the bureaucratic hurdles.
• Though some salient features of the police order are still under process, it has largely been enforced in the federal capital.
• However, the magistrates shall continue retaining their powers and police shall work closely for judicial matters as per the CrPC

6. `Five Pakistani journalists among 67 killed this year`

• Five Pakistani journalists are among the 67 media personnel killed so far during 2022 in the line of duty, according to figures released by the International Federation of Journalists (IFJ) on December 11, 2022.
• IFJ renewed its call for concrete actions to protect the safety and freedoms of journalists as it recorded a spike in the numbers of journalists killed or imprisoned during 2022. Last year, 47 journalists were killed, IFJ said.
• The Pakistani journalists, who lost lives in 2022 and recorded in the IFJ list, were: Hasnain Shah, Ziaur Rehman Faroogi, Iftikhar Ahmed, Muhammad Younis and Sadaf Naeem


7. Livestock produces large share of GHG emissions: WB

• Although Pakistan is a minor contributor to climate change, livestock produces a large share of the country`s Green House Gases (GHG) emissions, reveals a World Bank study.
• It states that total national emissions represent 0.7 per cent of global emissions, but livestock alone generates 36pc of this amount. This calls for adequate measures to reduce livestock emissions through better feeding and manure management, emphasised the latest study titled, `Sindh`s Livestock: Getting to know an important but neglected sector` It is estimated that the country`s livestock sub-sector contributes 11.7pc to GDP, and as muchas 56-60.6pc to the overall agriculture GDP.
• The contribution of livestock to GDP and agricultural GDP in Sindh specifically is not known but is assumed to be slightly lower than at the national level. Livestock is also a source of foreign exchange earnings, with 3.1pc of exports and being the fifth largest export

8. Under-fire Greek MEP loses VP powers over Qatar graft probe

• A Greek MEP had her powers as a vice president of the European Parliament suspended on December 11, 2022 over a corruption probe implicating World Cup hosts Qatar that has ensnared four other sand sparked calls for `root and branch reform` in the EU institution.
• European Parliament president Roberta Metsola `has decided to suspend with immediate effect all powers, duties and tasks that were delegated to Eva Kaili in her capacity as Vice President of the European Parliament,` a spokesperson said.

9. Nasa`s Orion capsule returns to Earth after flight around moon

• NASA`s Orion capsule barreled through Earth`s atmosphere and splashed down in the Pacific ocean on December 11, 2022 after making an un-crewed voyage around the moon, winding up the inaugural mission of the US agency`s Artemis lunar programme 50 years to the day after Apollo`s final moon landing.
• The gumdrop-shaped Orion capsule, carrying a simulated crew of three mannequins wired with sensors, plunked down in the ocean at 9:40am PST (1740 GMT) off Mexico`s Baja California peninsula, executing a key demonstration of how future lunar astronauts would safely return to Earth.


10. Japanese startup launches historic moon mission

• A Japanese startup`s spacecraft was launched to the Moon on December 11, 2022 in the country`s first-ever lunar mission and the first of its kind by a private company.
• The launch was carried out by Elon Musk`s SpaceX in Cape Canaveral in the US state of Florida after two postponements for additional pre-flight checks.
• The spacecraft, produced by Tokyo-based startup ispace, blasted off aboard a Falcon 9 rocket at 2:38am, live footage of the launch showed
