1. IMF review put off to allow passage of SBP bill: Tarin

• Finance Minister Shaukat Tarin said on January 26, 2022 the International Monetary Fund`s (IMF) Executive Board had delayed on Pakistan`s request its case for completion of the sixth review because of authorities` inability to get the State Bank of Pakistan amendment act passed by the Senate.
• `The IMF board was kind enough to accept our request and postpone the review until February 2,` he said at a news conference. He said the government was required to get the SBP bill passed by the Senate on Wednesday so that the IMF board could consider completion of the sixth review at its meeting slated for Jan 28, but this could not be done.
• `We are taking the bill to the Senate soon and hopefully get it passed,` he said in reply to a question

2. President appoints ex-NAB DG as PM`s aide on accountability

• Amid strong criticism over the Transparency International report indicating Pakistan`s ranking sliding for a third consecutive year, President Arif Alvi on the advice of Prime Minister Imran Khan appointed retired brigadier Musaddiq Abbasi as special assistant to the premier on accountability and interior on January 26, 2022.
• The appointment has been made within 72 hours of the resignation of former special assistant to the prime minister Mirza Shahzad Al(bar with whom Mr Khan was reportedly `not happy`.
• A source in the National Accountability Bureau (NAB) told Dawn that Mr Abbasi served in several key positions for 12 years in the bureau after joining the anti-corruption watchdog in the Gen Musharraf regime.

3. Senate body passes metrological institute bill pending for 25 years

• A parliamentary committee on Wednesday unanimously approved the National Metrological Institute Bill, 2022, which had been pending for the last 25 years.
• Reviewing the content of the bill, the Senate Standing Committee on Science and Technology, which met to deliberate on the document, pointed out certain typographical errors. Other than that there was consensus that the bill was overdue.
• The committee members observed that it was unfortunate that the bill had been pending for over a quarter century.
• The meeting learnt that the National Physical and Standards Laboratory (NPSL), located in Islamabad, was the only National Metrology Institute of Pakistan functioning in a professional manner and rendering calibration and testing services.

4. Cabinet panel reviews security plan for PSL, Kashmir Day

• The Punjab government is looking towards the federal government whether it declares `state guest` status for foreign cricketers arriving in the city to take part in the upcoming Pakistan Super League 7 (PSL-7) to add further layers to their security arrangements.
• The provincial government seems more concerned for foolproof security arrangements in the wake of the Anarkali blast as the commissioner was reported as saying that it could be aimed at disrupting the upcoming PSL-7.
• The foolproof security arrangements for the normal circumstances have almost been completed for holding the PSL matches at Gaddafi Stadium from Feb 10 to 27.
• Of total 34 PSL matches, 19 matches including semi-finals and final will be played at the Gaddafi Stadium. As many as 15 matches will be played in Karachi from January 26, 2022 (today) to Feb 7.

5. T-bills yields cut by up to 68bps

• Cut-off yields in the auction of treasury bills on January 26, 2021 dropped by up to 68 basis points while the State Bank of Pakistan (SBP) raised Rs729.29 billion.
• The T-bills auction the first after the monetary policy announcement on Jan 24 witnessed a significant decline in the cut-off yields, apparently due to no change in the policy rate.
• The biggest cut in the rate was noted in the benchmark six-month tenor, as its yield was slashed by 68 basis points to 10.69 per cent while the amount raised was Rs130bn

6. West links humanitarian aid for Afghanistan to basic rights

• Western diplomats linked humanitarian aid to Afghanistan to an improvement in human rights after meeting a Taliban delegation on a landmark visit to Europe.
• On the final day of the Taliban`s first official trip to Europe since returning to power in August, the fundamentalists held talks behind closed doors with several Western diplomats. The Taliban are seeking international recognition and financial aid.
• Afghanistan`s humanitarian situation has rapidly deteriorated since the group returned to power in August 2021, when international aid came to a sudden halt, worsening the plight of millions of people already suffering from hunger after several severe droughts

7. Russian, Ukrainian officials meet in bid to ease tensions

• Russian and Ukrainian delegations met in Paris for talks on January 26, 2022 in a bid to defuse soaring tensions, with France seeking to usher both sides down a `path to de-escalation` The high-level meeting, attended by senior diplomats from France and Germany, brings together the four countries in a format that has been used repeatedly since Russia`s 2014 annexation of the Ukrainian province of Crimea.
• Russia is represented by vice-prime minister Dmitri Kozak and Ukraine by presidential advisor Andriy Yermak, with diplomatic advisors to President Emmanuel Macron and German Chancellor Olaf Scholz also taking part in the tall(s that began at 1100 GMT

8. Syrian Kurds retake prison, ending six-day IS attack

• Kurdish forces on January 26, 2022 retook full control of a prison in northeast Syria where jihadists of the militant Islamic State group had been holed up since attacking it six days earlier.
• The brazen IS jailbreak attempt and ensuing clashes left more than 180 dead in the jihadists` most high-profile military operation since the loss of their `caliphate` nearly three years ago.
• Ghwayran prison in the city of Hasakeh held an estimated 3,500 IS inmates when the initial attack began on January 20 with explosives-laden vehicles steered by suicide bombers

9. HBL Pakistan Super League Award-winning stars set to light up seventh edition

• The toss for the opening match of the seventh edition of the HBL Pakistan Super League on January 27, 2022 (today) will feature two award-winning cricket stars in Babar Azam and Mohammad Rizwan.
• Pakistan skipper Babar, who will lead Karachi Kings, was recently named the ICC ODI Cricketer of the Year while defending champions Multan Sultans captain Rizwan won the T20I Cricketer of the Year award.
• In November, the Pakistan opening duo led the national side to the T20 World Cup semi-finals in a year that saw them win a record number of 20 Twenty20 Internationals

10. Ice hockey championship concludes in Skardu

• The two-day Baltistan Ice Hockey Championship concluded in Skardu on January 26, 2022.
• The event was held to spread awareness about impact of climate change, melting glaciers, conservation of wildlife and importance of ecological balance.
• Four teams from Baltistan division, including, Siachen Red, Baltoro Blue, Biafo Yellow and Chogo Lugma Green participated in the competitions.
• The event was held at the Ice Rink, District Park, Halmaranga.
• Siachen Red won the final match beating Chugo Lugma Green by one goal
