1. NSA meets senior Taliban officials during Kabul visit

• National Security Adviser Dr Moeed Yusuf on January 29, 2022 held talks with senior Taliban officials in Kabul on bilateral ties.
• Dr Yusuf, who was leading an inter-ministerial delegation, kicked off the trip with a meeting with Taliban regime`s acting Foreign Minister Amir Khan Muttagi.
• He is the second ministerial level government functionary to have visited Kabul since the Taliban took over Afghanistan in August last year, as earlier Foreign Minister Shah Mahmood Qureshi had visited the country in October


2. Repurposing farm policies to bring multiple benefits: WB

• A new World Bank report says that repurposing current agricultural public policies could deliver multiple benefits for people, the planet and the economy. It further adds that climate change is not a distant threat and is already adversely affecting agriculture.
• The report titled `Repurposing Agricultural Policies and Support: Options to Transform Agriculture and Food Systems for Better Health of People, Economies and Health`, issued the other day, revealed that investing in climate-smart innovations that both increase agricultural productivity and reduce greenhouse gas emissions.
• These could reduce overall emissions from agriculture by more than 40 per cent, restore 105 million hectares of agricultural land to natural habitats, and reduce the cost of healthy foods, thereby also contributing to better nutritional outcomes


3. Erdogan sacks statistics chief after record inflation

• Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan has sacked the head of the state statistics agency, according to a decree published on January 29, 2022, after releasing data showing last year`s infiation rate hit a 19-year high of 36.1 per cent.
• Sait Erdal Dincer was just the latest in a series of economic dismissals by Erdogan, who has sacked three central bank governors since July 2019.
• Erdogan has railed against high interest rates, which he believes cause inflation.
• The 2021 inflation figure released by Dincer angered both the pro-government and opposition camps


4. India plans over $40bn for food, fertiliser subsidy

• India is likely to set aside about 3 trillion Indian rupees ($40 billion) on food and fertiliser subsidies in its budget next week for 2022-23, officials said, roughly the same amount the government budgeted for the fiscal year ending in March.
• India`s subsidy bills have spiralled due to pandemic relief measures for the poor and a sharp rise in global prices of chemicals. New Delhi has already raised fertiliser subsidies twice in this fiscal year, and sources said that its pay-outs for 2021/22 could be its highest yet.
• In the budget, Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman is due to present on Tuesday, the government will allocate 1.1 trillion rupees to fertiliser subsidies, and 2 trillion rupees to food subsidies, three officials told Reuters on condition of anonymity


5. Ukraine calls on West to be `firm` in Russia talks

• Kiev on January 29, 2022 urged the West to remain `vigilant and firm` in its talks with Russia, as US President Joe Biden announced a small troop deployment to eastern Europe amid fears Moscow could invade Ukraine.
• Washington`s top defence officials warned on Friday the Kremlin had massed enough troops and hardware at the border to threaten the whole of Ukraine but called for further diplomatic efforts to avert a `horrific` conflict.
• Western leaders are scrambling to defuse the crisis by reaching out to Russian President Vladimir Putin, while also trying to keep the pressure up by vowing unprecedented sanctions should he send in his forces

6. Rejected by New Zealand, reporter turns to Taliban for help

• A pregnant New Zealand journalist says she turned to the Taliban for help and is now stranded in Afghanistan after her home country has prevented her from returning due to a bottleneck of people in its coronavirus quarantine system.
• In a column published in The New Zealand Herald on January 29, 2022, Charlotte Bellis said it was brutally ironic that she`d once questioned the Taliban about their treatment of women and she was now asking the same questions of her own government.
• When the Taliban offers you a pregnant, unmarried woman safe haven, you know your situation is messed up, Bellis wrote in her column


7. UAE-trained fighters say ready to `repel` Houthi attacks

• A UAE-trained militia said on January 29, 2022 some of its fighters remained on the front lines in key Yemeni conflict zones as part of defensive measures after driving out the Houthi rebels.
• The Giants Brigades said it had begun repositioning its forces after pushing the insurgents back from oil-rich Shabwa province and stopping short of launching a northward offensive towards the strategically vital city of Marib.
• The surprise announcement followed two drone and missile attacks by the Houthis on the United Arab Emirates, the first of which killed three oil workers


8. Shaheen kicks off captaincy with loss as openers help Multan chase record total

• In his first match as captain, Shaheen Shah Afridi wouldn`t have wished to be on the losing side, that too after his team Lahore Qalandars posted 206 for Multan Sultans to chase here at the National Stadium on January 29, 2022.
• The Pakistan pace sensation tried his best. With the defending champions cruising at 168-1 by the 16th over, Shaheen, after conceding 20 runs in his first two overs, came back to clean up Multan skipper Mohammad Rizwan.
• While Shaheen took Rizwan`s crucial wicket, he was smashed for three fours, one by South African Rilee Rossouw and two by Sohaib Maqsood.


9. Nasim`s five-for helps Quetta get off the mark

• Pakistan fast bowler Nasim Shah clinched a five-wicket haul as Quetta Gladiators got off the mark at the HBL Pakistan Super League after beating Karachi Kings by eight wickets here at the National Stadium on January 29, 2022.
• Nasim ended up with figures of 5-20 as Quetta, after winning the toss, restricted Karachi to a paltry total of 114, which the Sarfraz Ahmed-led side chased down comfortably. Quetta openers Ahsan Ali and Will Smeed (30 off 35, three fours and a six), combined for a 76-run partnership, which ended with the latter falling to Mohammad Imran in the 12th over.


10. `Pro-people bureaucrat` Tasneem Siddiqui passes away

• Former top civil servant and social activist Tasneem Ahmad Siddiqui who passed away from a sudden cardiac arrest at the age of 82 early on January 29, 2022 morning in Karachi, was most celebrated for his conceptualisation of the project known as Khuda Ki Basti in Hyderabad and the reinvigoration of the Sindh Katchi Abadis Authority.
• Both of his most significant professional achievements were connected to his abidingin terestin providing affordable hous-ing to the urban poor. The Khuda Ki Basti-Incremental Development Scheme (aka `City of God`) that he designed won the Aga Khan Award for Architecture in 1995 while Siddiqui`s services as a government servant were recognised by the prestigious Ramon Magsaysay Award of the Philippines government and a Sitar a-i-Imtiaz in 1999.
