1. 37-member Punjab cabinet sworn in

• A 37-member cabinet of Punjab`s `trustee` Chief Minister Hamza Shehbaz took oath of their offices here on July 24, 2022 evening, provoking the ire of the opposition PTI and PML-Q which termed it a violation of the court orders.
• The oath-taking ceremony was held at the Governor House around 16 hours before the Supreme Court is to take up on Monday the case related to the controversial runoff poll for the office of chief minister conducted on Friday.
• The decision to immediately form the provincial cabinet was taken at a meeting chaired by Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif earlier in the day.
• Punjab Governor Balighur Rehman administered oath to the cabinet members


2. Govt set to lift import ban on luxury items

• The government is set to begin removing restrictions on the import of `non-essential and luxury items` imposed on Feb 19 and provide energy at subsidised rates electricity at nine cents per unit and gas at $9 per unit throughout the current fiscal year to make the country`s exports competitive.
• Sources told Dawn that a special virtual meeting of the Economic Coordination Committee (ECC) had been scheduled for Sunday to approve the subsidised energy rates, but was then postponed at the last moment for a day to be merged with another huddle on Monday with important items on the table


3. US to help Pakistan set up Centre for Disease Control

• The United States and Pakistan will discuss setting up a Centre for Disease Control (CDC) in Pakistan when they hold their first-ever health dialogue in Washington on Monday.
• A four-member Pakistani delegation, led by federal Minister for Health Abdul Qadir Patel, reached Washington on Saturday for the talks. Earlier this week, Pakistan also sought US support for its efforts to stabilise the economy.

4. Import of inexpensive cancer medicines from Russia resumes

• The import of inexpensive medicines for cancer treatment from Russia, which came to a halt in February after Russia`s invasion of Ukraine, resumed after more than five months as the banks have started opening Letters of Credit (LCs) for the trade.
• With the new development, importers sound confident that Russian products would be available in the local market by the first week of August 2022, bringing an end to the misery of hundreds of cancer patients and their families.
• `We have formally received a nod from banks [for opening the LCs] recently and that formality has already been met by several importers,` said an importer


5. Govt to introduce inclusive education in two special schools

• The Khyber Pakhtunkhwa government has planned to introduce inclusive education in two schools of special education on pilot basis to enable the children to start a normal life.
• `We have given a proposal to the social welfare department to upgrade facilities in two of the 11 special education schools to enhance the mobility of physically challenged children, said Dr Mahboobur Rahman, a former head of physiotherapy department at Hayatabad Medical Complex.
• Speaking at a free medical camp at Habib Physiotherapy Complex Hayatabad on July 24, 2022, he said that number of special children was rising due to economic hardships, burgeoning poverty, surge in population in addition to war against terrorism in former tribal areas

6. North Korea accuses US of biological warfare in Ukraine

• North Korea accused the United States on July 24, 2022 of manufacturing biological weapons in Ukraine, echoing a Russian claim dismissed by the United Nations in March.
• Moscow ally Pyongyang in February said US policy was the `root cause of the Ukraine crisis`, and this month formally recognised two self-proclaimed pro Russian separatist regions in eastern Ukraine, prompting Kyiv to cut diplomatic ties with North Korea.
• Washington `set up many biological labs in tens of countries and regions, including Ukraine, in disregard of the international treaties`, the official Korean Central News Agency said on Sunday, citing what it said had been `detected` by Russia


7. Russian FM reassures Egypt on grain delivery

• Russia`s top diplomat reassured Egyptian leaders on July 24, 2022 that their orders for Russian grain would be met as he began a tour of African countries dependent on imports for their food supply.
• `We confirmed the commitment of Russian exporters of cereal products to meet their orders in full,` Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov told a news conference after talks with Egyptian counterpart Sameh Shoukry.
• `President Vladimir Putin stressed this during a recent telephone call with Egyptian President (Abdel Fattah) al-Sisi.` Lavrov`s visit comes hot on the heels of a landmark deal Russia and Ukraine signed on Friday with the United Nations and Turkey aimed at relieving a global food crisis caused by blocked Black Sea grain deliveries


8. Israeli forces kill two Palestinians in West Bank

• Israeli forces killed two Palestinians during an overnight raid in the occupied West Bank, officials on the two sides said July 24, 2022.
• The Israeli army said it carried out operations and used live fire in several locations, including in Nablus, adding it arrested four `individuals suspected of involvement in terrorist activities`.
• The military said `hits` were identified against multiple `terrorists` and said there were no reported wounded on its own side.
• The Palestinian health ministry identified the dead as Muhamad Azizi, 25, who it said was killed by a bullet to the chest, and Abdul Rahman Jamal Suleiman Sobh, 28, who was shot in the head


9. China launches second of three space station modules

• China on July 24, 2022 launched the second of three modules needed to complete its new space station, state media reported, the latest step in Beijing`s ambitious space programme.
• The un-crewed craft, named Wentian, was propelled by a Long March 5B rocket at 2:22pm (0622 GMT) from the Wenchang launch centre on China`s tropical island of Hainan.
• A quarter of an hour later, an official from the China Manned Space Agency (CMSA) confirmed the `success` of the launch.
• Hundreds of people gathered on nearby beaches to take photos of the launcher rising through the air in a plume of white smoke. After around eight minutes of flight, `the Wentian lab module successfully separated from the rocket and entered its intended orbit, making the launch a complete success,` the CMSA said. Beijing launched the central module of its space station Tiangong which means `heavenly palace` in April 2021


10. One Pakistani, two UK climbers summit K2

• Three climbers Mohammad Hussain from Skardu, Paul Etherdge and Peter from the UKon July 24, 2022 summited K2 (8,611).
• Sakhawat Hussain from Summit Karakoram told Dawn that the three-member team reached the top of the world`s second highest peak at 8:20am.
• So far, 148 climbers have summited the Savage Mountain in the first summit push of this summer.
• Mohammad Abbas, a Pakistani guide from the base camp, told Dawn that most of the climbers who scaled K2 returned to the base camp safely though some had to abandon their attempt half way for multiple reasons, while the remaining climbers would start attempt from base camp from Sunday night
