1. Pakistan, Turkey to shore up strategic, economic ties

• Pakistan and Turkey on June 1, 2022 vowed to enhance their strategic and economic relations and agreed to take measures for eliminating terrorism.
• The countries made the commitments during a one-on-one meeting between Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan. They later made their pledge public during a joint press conference at Presidential Complex in Ankara.
• On an invitation from Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, Mr Erdogan agreed to visit Pakistan in September this year for talks on issues of mutual interests


2. Seventh child found infected with poliovirus

• Another child was found infected with poliovirus in North Waziristan, taking the tally of patients reported in the tribal district to seven in just over a month.
• All cases have been reported from this southern district of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and more are expected from the same area due to high refusal rate and instances of finger-marking without vaccination during campaigns.
• With the emergence of the latest case, the global count of wild polio in 2022 has reached eight, with only one case being reported from Afghanistan in January.
• This means that 87pc of the global cases have been reported from Pakistan


3. May inflation hits 28-month high

• Inflation escalates to a 28-month high of 13.8 per cent in May from previous month`s 13.4pc on the back of a steady increase in food and energy prices amid the weakening rupee, according to data released by the Pakistan Bureau of Statistics on June 1, 2022.
• The inflation-measured by the Consumer Price Index (CPI) has been on the rise since March, undermining earlier gains. The increase in CPI could have been much higher had the previous government not frozen oil prices at the current level from March until May 26.
• All the three indicators CPI, Sensitive Price Index (SPI) and Wholesale Price Index (WPI) measuring inflation saw an unprecedented spike in May


4. Court declares e-challans illegal

• The Lahore High Court has declared that the e-challans being issued to the motorists for violation of traffic rules by the Punjab Safe City Authority (PSCA) are illegal for having no legal backing.
• `The e-ticketing system has no sanction of law, it cannot sustain. Nullum crime nsinelege (no crime without law) is one of the fundamental principles of criminal law, Justice Tariq Saleem Sheikh observes in his judgement passed on a petition challenging the power of the safe city authority to issue e-challans.
• The judge had reserved the verdict on March 28


5. Punjab cabinet approves Rs200bn flour subsidy

• The maiden meeting of Punjab cabinet on June 2, 2022 approved Rs200 billion subsidy on flour to ensure the commodity will be available to the masses at Rs490 per 10kg bag in the province.
• The eight-member cabinet`s meeting chaired by Chief Minister Hamza Shahbaz at the CM secretariat also approved the constitution of new board of Punjab Mass Transit Authority with Khwaja Ahmad Hasaan as its vice-chairman.
• The meeting also approved provision of wheat to the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa government as a gesture to promote inter-provincial harmony and strengthen the bonds of national unity. It also allowed procurement of one million metric tons of wheat from Pakistan Agricultural Storage and Services Corporation (Passco).

6. MoU signed to boost border trade with Iran

• Pakistan and Iran on June 1, 2022 signed a 32-point memorandum of understanding (MoU) to boost bilateral trade and provide more facilities to people involved in the border trade and other business activities.
• The MoU was signed at the conclusion of a two-day meeting of the Pak-Iran Joint Border Trade Committee in Zahidan, the capital of Iran`s border province of Sistan and Balochistan.
• The Chief Collector of Customs, Balochistan, Mohammad Sadiq, and the General Manager of Industry, Mines and Trade Organisation of Iran`s Sistan and Balochistan province, Eraj Hassanpur, signed the MoU


7. International police bust `FluBot` phone scam

• Police in 11 countries have taken down a mobile phone scam dubbed FluBot that spread around the world via fake text messages, Dutch and EU police said on June 1, 2022.
• Dutch cybercops led an operation in May targeting the malware, which infects Android phones using texts which pretend to be from a parcel firm or which say a person has a voicemail waiting.
• Hackers would then steal bank details from infected phones, which automatically sent messages to other mobiles in the user`s contact list, passing on the scam like a flu virus.
• `To date, we have disconnected ten thousand victims from the FluBot network and prevented over 6.5 million spam text messages,` Dutch police said in a statement


8. Ukraine pins hopes on US weapons as Russians poised to take key city

• Ukraine looked close to losing the key eastern city of Severodonetsk to Russian forces but was boosted on Wednesday by the US decision to send more advanced rocket systems to help with its defence.
• `The Russians control 70 percent of Severodonetsk,` Lugansk region governor Sergiy Gaiday announced on Telegram, adding that Ukrainian forces were withdrawing to prepared positions.
• `If in two or three days, the Russians take control of Severodonetsk, they will install artillery and mortars and will bombard more intensely Lysychansk,` the city across the river, which Gaiday said remained under Kyiv`s control


9. China conducts `readiness patrol` around Taiwan

• The Chinese military said on June 1, 2022 it had conducted a combat `readiness patrol` in the seas and airspace around Taiwan in recent days, saying it was a necessary action to respond to `collusion` between Washington and Taipei.
• China, which claims democratically governed Taiwan as its own territory, has stepped up its military manoeuvres around the island over the past two years or so, as It seeks top ressure Taipei to accept its sovereignty claims.
• China has been particularly unhappy with US support for Taiwan


10. Actor Fawad made UNDP ambassador

• The United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) Pakistan appointed acclaimed actor Fawad Khan as its `National Goodwill Ambassador` at a ceremony in Islamabad on June 1, 2022.
• UNDP`s goodwill ambassadors are inspirational individuals who serve as spokespersons to uphold the UN Charter and the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
• UNDP Pakistan resident represent a-tive Knut Ostby, other officials and UNDP`s young beneficiaries working as green social entrepreneurs were part of the ceremony.
• Fawad Khan signed the formal document with Ostby, and this was followed by the screening of a climate action advocacy film titled `Don`t Choose Extinction`
