1. Water woes fuel Sindh suspicions as Punjab blames flows

• Acute water shortages coupled with a searing heatwave have sparked grave concerns in South Punjab and Sindh, with tensions building between the two provinces over their share of the nation`s water resources as demand far outstrips supply.
• Life has been upturned in the desert areas of Punjab, including Cholistan, Thal and the tribal areas of Dera Ghazi Khan and Rajanpur, where people have been forced to migrate with their cattle to greener pastures and urban centres in their desperate search for water.
• A heatwave there in the early days of May saw the mercury shoot up to 50 degrees Celsius in desert areas, compared to an average of 44 degrees Celsius over the past decade. In other regions, temperatures rose to 48 degrees Celsius compared to past records of 40 degrees Celsius in the same period

2. Deputy, additional secretaries posted at CM office

• The government on May 13, 2022 transferred and posted six additional secretaries and two deputy secretaries at the chief minister`s office.
• According to a notification, additional secretary (IPC), I&C wing of S&GAD, Sumaira Farooq, AS finance department Zeeshan Shabbir Rana, Multan deputy commissioner (on officiating basis) Aamir Karim Khan, acting charge basis AS (prisons) home department Dr Muhammad Waheed Asghar Bhatti, AS (welfare) S&GAD Mubeen Illahi and Khushab Deputy Commissioner Aurangzeb Haider Khan have been posted as additional secretaries at chief minister`s office against vacant posts.
• Mianwali Deputy Commissioner Khurram Shahzad and deputy secretary (welfare) S&GAD Muhammad Tasleem Akhtar Rao have been transferred and posted as deputy secretaries

3. Alvi reconstitutes CCI under Shehbaz

• President Dr Arif Alvi on May 13, 2022 approved the reconstitution of the Council of Common Interests (CCI), which would be headed by Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif.
• The CCI was reconstituted due to change of government. The last council was presided over by former prime minister Imran Khan with former Punjab chief minister Sardar Usman Buzdar its member. However, after PTI-led government`s ouster at the Centre and in Punjab, Imran Khan and Mr Buzdar are no longer part of the council.
• According to the Presidency, Mr Alvi had reconstituted the council on the advice of Prime Minister Sharif under Article 153 of the Constitution

4. Pindi, Islamabad among districts with highest number of child abuse cases

• Rawalpindi and Islamabad have been listed as districts with second and third highest numbers of child abuse cases among 10 districts of the country.
• According to information shared by a non-governmental organisation working for child protection, Sahil, on its twitter handle, said Kasur topped the list with 298 cases.
• It said 292 cases were reported in the district of Rawalpindi and 247 in Islamabad even though the federal capital had a higher literacy rate and slightly more law-abiding citizens.
• Sahil said in its findings that in the year 2021 out of the total 3,852 cases more than half 52 per cent had been reported from these 10 districts

5. Random testing of air travellers from Gulf states, S. Arabia begins

• Random screening (Rapid Antigen Test) of travellers arriving from Gulf states and Saudi Arabia begins at Karachi, Lahore and Islamabad airports from Saturday, days after the first case of Omicron sub-variant was reported in Pakistan.
• The Centre for Diseases Control, the National Institute of Health, Islamabad, which took the decision in the wake of the Omicron sub-variant, recommended the authorities concerned to keep a close check for surveillance and monitoring at points of entry.
• According to a spokesman for the Civil Aviation Authority (CAA), RAT would be conducted at the three airports for all inbound flights from the Gulf countries and Saudi Arabia as per proportion. The process through RAT would be effective from 12:01am on May 14 at Islamabad, Lahore and Karachi airports, he said

6. Record $3.1bn remittances sent in April

• For the first time, remittances crossed the figure of $3 billion in a month, which gave hope that the country would achieve its annual remittance target of $30bn.
• The State Bank of Pakistan reported on May 13, 2022 that the country received $3.1bn remittances for April, registering an increase of 12pc compared to the $2.79bn received in the same month of FY21.
• The country is currently facing a serious shortage of dollars as the outflows for debt servicing and trade deficit have shattered the country`s reserves. Since August 2021, the State Bank`s foreign exchange reserves have fallen by half

7. Multiple passport holders get seven-month amnesty

• The government has approved yet another amnesty scheme for holders of multiple passports which allows them to get their additional passports canceled and avoid a jail term under the law.
• Informed sources told Dawn that under the seventh amnesty scheme, the holders of more than one passport have been given a little over seven months to either set things right or be ready to face the music.
• Information Minister Marriyum Aurengzeb confirmed that a summary to this effect had been approved by the federal cabinet on May 10. She said the scheme would remain in force till December 31

8. Israeli police attack slain journalist`s pallbearers

• Israeli police officers on May 13, 2022 beat mourners, friends and family members carrying the coffin of Al Jazeera journalist Shireen Abu Akleh on Friday, before a sea of thousands led her casket through Jerusalem`s old quarter in an outpouring of grief and anger over her killing.
• Packed around Abu Akleh`s coffin, Palestinians, some waving the nation`s flags and chanting `with our soul and blood we will redeem you Shireen` began walking toward the gates of St Joseph`s Hospital.
• Israeli police, in an apparent bid to stop them proceeding by foot rather than taking the coffin by car, burst through the courtyard gates and charged at the crowd, some beating pallbearers with batons and kicking them

9. Erdogan opposes Finland, Sweden`s entry into Nato

• President Tayyip Erdogan said on Friday it was not possible for Nato-member Turkey to support plans by Sweden and Finland to join the pact given that the Nordic countries were `home to many terrorist organisations` Though Turkey has officially supported Nato enlargement since it joined the US-led alliance 70 years ago, its opposition could pose a problem for Sweden and Finland given new members need unanimous agreement.
• Turkey has repeatedly slammed Sweden and other Western European countries for its handling of organisations deemed terrorist by Ankara, including the Kurdish militant groups PKK and YPG, and the followers of US-based Islamic cleric Fethullah Gulen. Ankara says Gulenists carried out a coup attempt in 2016. Gulen and his supporters deny the accusation

10. President Sheikh Khalifa a private figure in booming UAE

• President Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al-Nahyan, who died on May 13, 2022, was a reserved figure who saw the United Arab Emirates skyrocket on the global scene but rarely appeared in public himself.
• Sheilch Khalifa, who died at the age of 73, succeeded his father, the late UAE founding president Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al-Nahyan, as ruler of Abu Dhabi, the largest and wealthiest of the seven-member UAE.
• According to APP, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif while describing the demise of UAE President Sheikh Khalifa as `a tremendous loss`, said Pakistan has lost a true friend and trusted partner.
• Pakistan has decided to observe a three-day national mourning (from May 13 to May 15) on the sad demise of President Sheikh Khalifa, according to a notification issued by Cabinet Division
