1. NSC picks minister to lead panel probing audio leaks

• The National Security Committee (NSC) on September 28, 2022 constituted a body to investigate the leaks of conversations in the Prime Minister House, besides agreeing on putting in place a `legal framework` pertaining to cyber security.
• Earlier in the day, Army Chief Gen Qamar Bajwa, while presiding over the corps commanders conference, directed the troops to go after terrorists as they have stepped up attacks, particularly against security forces.
• The NSC meeting was convened after a series of audio recordings of conversations featuring Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, key leaders of the ruling PML-N and senior officials surf aced on social media.
• The embarrassing leaks particularly raised concerns about the security arrangements at the PM House, which is otherwise considered a highly secure place


2. US to partner with Punjab in various sectors

• US Ambassador Donald Blome met Parvez Elahi at chief minister`s office and agreed to promote partnership in population planning, alternate energy, agriculture and water management sectors.
• The chief minister briefed the ambassador about public welfare initiatives and legislation for saving campuses from drugs and thanked him for extending support to Pakistan during the corona pandemic.
• He said Pakistan gave special importance to its relations with the US and added that reforms were being introduced in different sectors. In this regard, he said, the US technical assistance would be welcomed.
• Mr Elahi said the education reforms programme of his last tenure was globally recognised and added that degree level education, as well as textbooks, have been made free for the students


3. $3bn railway to link Oman, UAE

• A new $3 billion railway is to link Oman`s Sohar port with Abu Dhabi, capital of the United Arab Emirates, officials said on September 28, 2022.
• The 303-kilometre (188 miles) railway, with passenger trains travelling up to 200 kilometres per hour, will join up with the UAE`s national network that is now under construction. The joint venture between Oman Rail and the UAE`s Etihad Rail was agreed during a visit by UAE President Mohamed bin Zayed to the Omani capital Muscat.
• `The railway… promises huge strategic economic and social gains,` Abdulrahman Salim Al Hatmi, Group CEO of Oman Rail`s parent company Asyad, said in a statement issued by the Abu Dhabi government


4. Mehrgarh Museum inaugurated

• Balochistan Chief Minister Mir Abdul Qudoos Bizenjo inaugurated the newly constructed Mehrgarh Museum in the provincial capital on September 28, 2022, vowing that the government would ensure all the historical sites are preserved.
• Speaking after the inauguration, he said the ancient site of Mehrgarh was considered one of the oldest civilisations in the world and highlighted the lifestyle of Balochistan.
• `We are proud of having the ownership of the world`s oldest civilisation in Mehrgarh in Balochistan,` he said.


5. India bans Muslim group after crackdown

• A week after raiding its offices followed by largescale arrests of members, India on September 28, 2022 banned the Popular Front of India (PFI).
• The Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA), however, did not act against the Social Democratic Party of India (SDPI), which is considered the PFI`s political arm.
• A government official said since SDPI is a recognised political party, registered with the Election Commission of India (ECI), any action against it would have to be initiated by the commission. In contrast, the PFI and its associate organisadons are registered under the Societies of Registration Act, 1860.
• Though an SDPI functionary told The Hindu they were not connected to PFI, it condemned the ban

6. Ukraine regions made `free choice in favour of Russia`: Moscow

• Moscow`s foreign ministry said on Wednesday that Russian-occupied regions in Ukraine made a `conscious and free choice` to join Russia after Kremlin proxies organised so-called referendums in the territories they control.
• `The results of the plebiscites speak for themselves: the people of the Donbas, Kherson and Zaporizhzhia regions do not want to go back to their old lives and have made a conscious and free choice in favour of Russia,` the ministry said in a statement.
• The statement came after the Moscow-installed leaders in the three regions asked President Vladimir Putin to formally annex the territories


7. 12bn workdays lost yearly due to depression, anxiety: WHO

• The World Health Organisation (WHO) and the International Labour Organisation (ILO) have called for concrete actions to address mental health concerns in the working population, saying that an estimated 12 billion workdays are lost annually due to depression and anxiety, costing the global economy nearly $1 trillion.
• Two new publications, aimed at addressing the issue, were published on September 28, 2022, including WHO`s guidelines on mental health at work and a derivative WHO/ILO policy brief.
• WHO`s global guidelines on mental health at work recommend actions to tackle risks to mental health such as heavy workloads, negative behaviours and other factors that create distress at work


8. Israeli forces kill four Palestinians

• Israeli forces killed four Palestinians in the occupied West Bank on September 28, 2022, pursuing a half year-long campaign of raids triggered by a series of lethal street attacks in Israel.
• Commandos, some of them undercover, were sent into the town of Jenin to capture two Palestinians suspected of carrying out ambushes, Israeli police said. It claimed Palestinians opened fire and set off a bomb, and were shot, the statement claimed.
• The raid touched off clashes elsewhere in Jenin that along with neighbouring Nablus has been a focus of Israeli forces. Some 40 Palestinians were wounded, medics said.


9. Pakistan hold nerve in yet another cliffhanger to take series lead

• Pakistan seemed to have the game in the bag but Moeen Ali had other ideas.
• In yet another grandstand finish in this seven-match series, the hosts needed a last-over hero to stop the counterattacking England captain at the Gaddafi Stadium on September 28, 2022 night. Up stepped debutant Aamir Jamal.

10. Cristoforetti becomes first European woman to command ISS

• Italy`s Samantha Cristoforetti on September 28, 2022 became the first European woman to take over command of the International Space Station during a ceremony broadcast live from space.
• The outgoing commander, Russian cosmonaut Oleg Artemyev, used the occasion to seemingly make a rare space-bound reference to the war in Ukraine, saying that `despite the storms on Earth, our international cooperation continues`.
• During a relaxed ceremony, Artemyev handed Cristoforetti a golden key, symbolising that she is the new commander of the space station until she returns to Earth on October 10
