1. Extra fuel charges in power bills deferred, not waived

• Finance Minister Miftah Ismail said on September 7, 2022 the application of fuel cost adjustment (FCA) on electricity bills had been deferred, not waived, on the orders of the prime minister, but promised that electricity rates and inflation would start declining after a month.
• He was speaking at a joint news conference with Defence Minister Khawaja Muhammad Asif, who said the finance minister would be elected as a senator before the expiry of his six-month term on Oct 16 in recognition of his hard work and tireless efforts to bring back the country from the brink of default and put up a strong defence against criticism.
• As per law, a person can be made a minister for six months and has to get elected as a senator or an MNA after that time


2. PA passes three bills rejected by governor

• The Punjab Assembly on September 7, 2022 reconsidered and passed three bills that had been rejected by the governor and sent back to the assembly secretariat.
• These included the Punjab Commission on Status of Women Bill 2022, Lahore Central Business District Development Authority Amendment Bill 2022, and Ravi Urban Development Authority Amendment Bill 2022.
• The house passed the three bills with a simple majority. Now they will become laws even without signatures of the governor.


3. Pakistan, India and Bangladesh to see 20pc rise in surface ozone levels

• The surface ozone levels can increase by 20 per cent across Pakistan, northern India and Bangladesh by the middle of the century, warns a UN report released on September 7, 2022.
• In its annual report, the World Meteorological Organisation (WMO) a UN agency that specialises in climate issues also warned against an expected increase in the frequency, intensity, and duration of heatwaves. The rising heat would worsen air quality harming human health and ecosystems and also increase wildfires across the globe, the report added.
• The UN agency explained that if greenhouse gas emissions remained high causing global temperatures to rise by three degrees Celsius from pre-industrial levels by the second half of the 21st century, surface ozone levels (would) increase across heavily polluted areas, particularly in Asia. `This includes a 20pc increase across Pakistan, northern India and Bangladesh, and 10pc across eastern China,` the report added


4. Gwadar varsity, PMSA ink deal for collaboration

• The University of Gwadar and Pakistan Maritime Security Agency (PMSA) on September 7, 2022 signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) for collaboration in curriculum development on maritime affairs and internship programme for students of the Gwadar university at the PMSA.
• Vice Chancellor of University of Gwadar and Deputy Director General of PMSA Rear Admiral Aamir signed the MOU under which the university will introduce maritime affairs as an academic course to its all degree programmes and the PMSA will provide technical and logistic support for the purpose.
• Speaking on the occasion, Dr Sabir said the university would soon make its unique identity in the fields of teaching and research related to maritime affairs.


5. Truss picks UK`s first cabinet without white man in top jobs

• The new British prime minister, Liz Truss, has selected a cabinet where for the first time a white man will not hold one of the country`s four most important ministerial positions.
• The cabinet, which met for the first time on September 7, 2022 amid energy crisis, includes the most diverse top team in British history: Kwasi Kwarteng as finance minister, James Cleverly as foreign secretary and Suella Braverman as interior minister.
• Kwarteng`s parents came from Ghana in the 1960s as Britain`s first Black finance minister while Cleverly, whose mother hails from Sierra Leone and whose father is white, is the first Black foreign minister

6. US military test launches ICBM

• The US military tested an unarmed intercontinental ballistic missile (ICBM) on September 7, 2022, the second in less than a month after a previous launch was delayed twice.
• Washington announced the test in advance, an unusual move apparently aimed at heading off an escalation of tensions with Russia that are already heightened due to Moscow`s invasion of Ukraine.
• `Air Force Global Strike Command Airmen launched an unarmed Minuteman III intercontinental ballistic missile equipped with three test reentry vehicles` early on September 7 from the Vandenberg Space Force Base in California, the US Air Force said in a statement.
• In a conflict, the re-entry vehicles would be armed with nuclear warheads


7. Albania cuts ties with Iran over `cyberattack`

• Albania broke diplomatic ties with Iran on September 7, 2022 over an alleged cyberattack against the government this summer, as Washington vowed to hold Tehran accountable for targeting its Nato ally.
• Albania and Iran have been bitter foes for years, stemming from Tirana`s hosting of the Iranian opposition group the People`s Mujahedeen of Iran (MEK) on its soil.
• Prime Minister Edi Rama on Wednesday accused Iran of directing a cyberattack against Albanian institutions on July 15 in a bid to `paralyse public services and hack data and electronic communications from the government systems`.
• It was the first time Tirana spoke about the alleged attack, and Rama said his country cut ties with Iran over it


8. Syria terms new Israeli strikes on airport a war crime

• Syria`s foreign ministry said on September 7, 2022 it considered the air strikes on civilian infrastructure to be a `war crime`, a day after Israeli strikes hit Aleppo airport for the second time in a week.
• A foreign ministry statement specifically referred to Israeli air raids on Tuesday on the airport that damaged the runway and put the site out of service.
• `The recurring Israeli attacks, especially the systematic and deliberate targeting of civilian objects in Syria the latest of which was the targeting of Aleppo International Airport yesterday amounts to a crime of aggression and a war crime according to international law,` the statement said.
• `Israel must be held to account for it,` it added


9. Ancient skeleton reveals amputation surgery 31,000 years ago

• A skeleton discovered in a remote corner of Borneo rewrites the history of ancient medicine and proves amputation surgery was successfully carried out about 31,000 years ago, scientists said on September 7, 2022.
• Previously, the earliest known amputation involved a 7,000-year-old skeleton found in France, and experts believed such operations only emerged in settled agricultural societies.
• The finding also suggests that Stone Age hunter-gatherers living in what is now Indonesia`s East Kalimantan province had sophisticated medical knowledge of anatomy and wound treatment


10. Naseem`s final-over blitz powers Pakistan past Afghanistan, into Asia Cup final

• Tailender Naseem Shah hit two last over sixes as Pakistan pulled off a thrilling one-wicket win over Afghanistan on September 7, 2022 to set up an Asia Cup Final against Sri Lanka, knocking out rivals India in the process.
• Chasing 130 for victory, Pakistan were in deep trouble at 118-9 when number 10 Naseem muscled two hits over the fence off Fazalhaq Farooqi to win with four balls to spare in Sharjah and end India and Afghanistan`s hopes of making the final.
• The Afghans appeared set for victory when Farooqi, who had figures of 3-19 from his first three overs, saw two full tosses at the start of the final over dispatched over long-off
