- Top US official on quiet visit to improve ties
- A senior United States National Security Council official has been quietly visiting the federal capital amid reports that both sides are giving `behind-the-scenes` efforts aimed at fixing the strains in ties more chances to avoid a complete breakdown of the increasingly dysfunctional relationship.
- `FS (Ms Tehmina Janjua) meets Ms Lisa Curtis, the Senior Director for South and Central Asia at the NSC of US, at Mofa (ministry of foreign affairs) this morning,` Foreign Of fice spokesman Dr Mohammad Faisal tweeted on February 26, 2018.
- Samina Baig made UNDP goodwill ambassador for Pakistan
- Renowned mountaineer Samina Baig was on February 26, 2-18 appointed as the `National Goodwill Ambassador` for Pakistan by the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP).
- The first Pakistani woman to have climbed Mount Everest, Ms Baig will lead efforts to build national awareness and pannerships around the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly those related to climate change, environmental protection, youth and women`s empowerment.
- Born in Gilgit-Baltistan, Ms Baig became the first Pakistani woman to climb Mount Everest at the age of 22. By the time she turned 23, she had climbed the highest mountain on each of the world`s seven continents.
- Iranian air commander meets Army, PAF chiefs
- The top commander of Iran`s air force, Brig Gen Hassan Shahsafi, on February 26,2018 met Chief of the Army Staff Gen Qamar Javed Bajwa at the General Headquarters, and Chief of the Air Staff Air Chief Marshal Sohail Aman at the Air Headquarters.
- The PAF`s media wing did not release any statement. The visit of the Iranian air force commander is more symbolic. It is one of the rarest military-level exchanges between the two countries whose relations have, for most of the time, remained tepid due to varying alignment in regional and global politics.
- Canadian hunts highest-rated Astore markhor
- A Canadian citizen hunted the highest-rated Astore markhor on February 25,2018, paying 58,000 US dollars to the Gilgit-Baltistan wildlife and parks department.
- Canadian citizen, Adam, had obtained permit for hunt of Astore markhor. The foreign hunter with support of a Pakistani guide and Astore conservation community members hunted the animal in Dashkin community controlled hunting area in Astore on February 26, 2018. The hunter killed the animal in a single shot
- GB wildlife department had on Sept 21, last year had auctioned permits for the hunting of 113 rare species under the trophy hunting programme 2017-18, with the hunting of endangered Astor markhor fetching the highest licence fee of $100,000 in the history of trophy hunting.
- Hunting permits for four Astor markhors were auctioned for $68,000to $100,000, 14 blue sheep for $8,000 to $10,000 and 95 ibex for $3,600.
- The hunting season in the region begins in November and ends in April.
- Bill passed to regularise 4,800 more ad hoc employees
- The Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Assembly on February 26, 2018 passed a bill for the regularisation of the services of another batch of over 4,800 ad hoc and project employees with the members demanding permanent jobs for 14,500 more ad hoc employees.
- These ad hoc and project employees are currently working in 58 departments, attached departments and autonomous bodies.
- Earlier, the government had regularised 40,000 contractual employees, mostly teachers, through a bill passed by the assembly
- Ed Sheeran named best-selling artist
- British folk-pop phenomenon Ed Sheeran on Februar 26, 2018 was named the best-selling artist in the world in 2017 by the global recorded music industry group IFPI.
- Sheeran’s Divide was the best-selling album of last year and ‘Shape of You’ was the best-selling single, London-based IFPI said in its announcement.
- Sheeran is the fifth recipient of the Global Recording Artist of the Year Award after One Direction (2013), Taylor Swift (2014), Adele (2015) and Drake (2016).
- Tarbela extension project starts power generation
- Pakistan Water and Power Development Authority (WAPDA) achieved yet another landmark towards energy security of the country, as Tarbela 4th Extension Hydropower Project started electricity generation Monday.
- The first generating unit, put into operation has started providing electricity to the National Grid.
- Prime Minister will formally inaugurate the project in 2nd week of March.
- Pakistan, UAE agree to further boost defence coop
- Defence Minister Khurram Dastgir Khan February 26, 2018 held a detailed meeting with UAE Minister of State for Defence Affairs Muhammad bin Ahmad Al Bowardi in Abu Dhabi.
- In the meeting, they discussed ways and means to further strengthen the existing cooperation in the field of defence between the two countries.
- Defence Minister Khurram Dastgir Khan visited Abu Dhabi on the invitation of the UAE government to attend the Third Session of the Unmanned Systems Exhibition and Conference.
- Merkel wins party backing for coalition while vowing renewal
- Chancellor Angela Merkel on February 26, 2018 overwhelmingly won the blessing of her conservative party for a hard-fought coalition deal, a relief for the veteran leader who has been weakened by party infighting over five months of political impasse in Germany.
- At a congress of Merkel’s Christian Democratic Union (CDU), the party she has led for nearly 18 years, delegates voted in favour of a government pact hammered out with the centre-left Social Democrats (SPD).The strong approval from the CDU gives a boost to the chancellor, who suffered a major setback when the party recorded its worst score since the 1950s in September’s general election
- First ever film, cultural policy unveiled
- Minister of State for Information, Broadcasting and National Heritage Marriyum Aurangzeb on February 26, 2018 announced the first ever film and cultural policy of the country at the conclusion of a three-day National Artists Convention and CPEC Cultural Caravan at Pakistan National Council of Arts (PNCA), which would come into force immediately.
- The policy envisages formally according the status of industry to the film industry, establishment of finance fund and a film academy, building of film studios, restoration of the Directorate of Films and Publications, abolition of duty on import of film equipment, film censor fee and sales tax, inclusion of artists in the health scheme, and 70% rebate to foreign film producers on travelling allowance and eatables. According to the policy, only Pakistani films would be screened on national holidays.
- Film studios would be set up under the public-private partnership and the government would provide land for the project. 80% rebates would also be given as far as the construction of cinemas is concerned.
