  1. COAS kicks off construction of Gwadar desalination plant
  • Chief of the Army Staff (COAS) Gen Qamar Javed Bajwa on March 4, 2018 laid the foundation stone of a desalination plant being built with the assistance of the United Arab Emirates and Swiss governments.
  • The project fulfils along-awaited demand of the local people as it will provide them 4.4 million gallons water per day with the capacity later to increase to 8.8m gallons per day
  • The desalination plant will be completed in six to eight months and help end the scarcity of drinking water in the area, reducing hardship of the local people who fetch water from far-flung areas.
  1. Govt unveils package for civil servants who die in harness
    • The Punjab government has started implementing a new package of financial assistance to the families of civil servants who die while in service, especially taking care of the children of two secretaries who died last year.
    • The new package has been made on the pattern of the Shuhada Package introduced for policemen who die in the line of duty, especially fighting terrorists. This package was given after DIG Traffic retired Capt Ahmed Mubeen, acting DIG Operations Zahid Ikram Gondal and some others died as a suicide bomber blew himself up at Lahore`s Charing Cross early last year.
    • According to the package, the lump sum grant for those in BS-1 to 4 has been revised to Rs1.6m from Rs0.4m, in BS 5 to 10 to Rs1.9m from Rs0.6m, in BS-11 to 15 toRs2.2m from Rs0.8m, in BS-16 and 17 to Rs 2.5m from Rsim, in BS 18 and 19 to Rs3.4m from Rs1.6m and in BS-20 to Rs4m from Rs2m.
  2. Saudi crown prince begins first foreign tour in Egypt
    • Saudi Arabia`s Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman landed in the Egyptian capital on March 4, 2018 at the start of his first foreign tour as heir to the throne.
    • A beaming Egyptian President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi greeted the prince at Cairo airport after he descended the red-carpeted steps of his plane.
    • Prince Mohammed will hold meetings with Sisi, a key regional ally, and other officials in Egypt before flying off to Britain on Wednesday and then later this month the United States.
  3. BJP topples CPI-M from power in Tripura after 25 years
    • Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi`s Hindu nationalist party ended 25 years of uninterrupted communist party rule in a northeastern state and consolidated its position in two other states in key provincial elections.
    • Impressive win is expected to boost the prospects of Modi`s Bharatiya Janata Party when it seeks a second term in national elections next year.
    • The BJP has been riding a wave of rising Hindu nationalism in the country.
  4. Pentagon urges Pakistan to avail new opportunities for defeating terrorism
    • As the United States and Pakistan reengage in efforts to improve their ties, the Pentagon reminded Islamabad that war against terrorism in the South Asian region has reached an inflection point and it should use this opportunity to defeat terrorists.
    • `With respect to Pakistan we believe that Pakistan can do more to combat terrorism,` Pentagon Chief Spokesperson Dana W. White said at a weekend news briefing in Washington.
    • When reminded that Pakistan has welcomed the Afghan government`s latest peace offer to the Taliban, Ms White said: `The Taliban has to abandon terror, it has to abandon violence, and it has to support the Afghan constitution.She also noted that the United States continues to consult New Delhi, not only about `India`s very important role` in Afghanistan but also on other issues that go beyond the South Asian region.
  5. China says it will hit back if US hurts its interests
    • China warned on March 4, 2018 that it was ready to hit back if the United States damaged its economic interests, fuelling fears of a trade war after President Donald Trump unveiled tariffs on steel and aluminium.
    • Trump`s announcement sparked a flurry of counter-threats from other nations. But Washington`s main trade rival had avoided any overt warnings of potential retaliation until now.
  6. US trainers in Afghanistan to offer new type of training to local troops
    • A brigade of seasoned American soldiers has arrived in Afghanistan in recent days on a much-trumpeted mission to offer a new type of training as well as motivation to beleaguered Afghan partners.
    • Pentagon officials hope the deployment of hundreds of battle-hardened, expert troops across the country will help turn the tide in the war, but Afghanistan watchers are sceptical about how much difference they can make in the 16-year-old conflict.
    • Most of the troops in the so-called Security Force Assistance Brigade, or SFAB, have multiple Afghanistan combat deployments under their belts, speak some level of Pashto or Dari and after having themselves undergone special training have now volunteered to return.

    • The Haji Abid Mahmood trained winner, was ridden forcefully by jockey Aamir Pervez, who made it seven wins in as many outings, a feat rarely achieved by a colt or a filly.

    • Italians voted March 4, 2018 in one of the country’s most uncertain elections ever, marked by a far-right and populist surge, anti-immigration tub-thumping and a leading role for comeback king Silvio Berlusconi.
    • The last polls carried out in mid-February suggested that a right-wing coalition led by Berlusconi’s centre-right Forza Italia (Go Italy) party will pick up the most votes – roughly 37 percent.
    • The 81-year-old media mogul’s four-party group is bolstered by two resurgent far-right forces – the League and Brothers of Italy – which have capitalised on fears over the hundreds of thousands of migrants who have arrived by boat from Libya since 2013
