What are Landslide and What Causes | General Science & Ability Notes

What Are Landslides?

A landslide is a downward movement of rock and soil debris that has become detached from the underlying slope. The material can move by falling, toppling, sliding, spreading and flowing.

What Causes Landslides?

There are many possible causes of landslides these can either be geological, morphological or human-induced. A few of these include saturation of slope material (rainfall), seismic activity (earthquakes and volcanoes), undercutting of cliffs and banks by waves and rivers, removal of vegetation, and modification of slopes.

When the stability of a slope decreases or changes, even just slightly, it can make the slope unstable. This means that with a large or even a small change, can cause a landslide. However, there are many things that contribute to a landslides including;

  • Erosion – if this occurs, even just slightly, can make some of the slope to fall in to oceans or rivers.
  • Glaciers can also have a landslide – there is not much of a different from a cliff top. Instead, the ice melts or is subject to heavy rain and causes a slight shift from a glacier.
  • Earthquakes – this brings about a sharp change in the slope and makes it unstable.
  • Groundwater can destabilize the slope putting pressure on it greatly.
  • Volcanoes erupting – this can cause the slope to become unstable.
  • Soil structure can change.

The Best English Teacher for CSS / PMS

Either it is CSS, PMS, or GRE, GAT, GMAT exams, English Grammar has become bone of the contention for competitive students. The CSS / PMS subjects of English Essay and Precis are considered as the toughest subjects. Each student is in pursuit of finding the best mentor for himself. There is a huge number of experienced teachers across the country for English, but the basic hurdle is to find out who will suit you. Coming towards the article, some of my fellows and friends asked me the hottest question “What is the best way to crack English Essay & Precis Paper?” Although I have taken coaching from multiple academies, I hardly recommend academies to my friends, followers, and all other serious aspirants. (I have already explained, why I don’t recommend academies and support the stance of Shanza Faiq, CSS 2018 Topper). First of all, I must tell 2 things to my fellows which I have been taught by my mentor in a time of stress and extreme depression, “No academy, no person is here to attempt your paper in exam, during paper there are only 2 powers that manifest your success and future i.e. ALLAH, and You”. Trusting yourself and having complete faith in Allah Almighty, are the only available tools that decide your destination. We, who qualified PMS, or any other competitive exams are not born successful, we always make it through Smart Work.
