Why CSS When You Were Already a Doctor? By: Dr Hina Sikander (CSS Officer)

I get this question in my inbox on daily basis. And I’ll try to answer it here.

Since day 1, my parents wanted me to be a doctor. I was conditioned into believing I wanted it too, and to an extent, it was my own dream too. I passionately worked for it. I got enrolled in a medical college and graduated as a doctor.

When the euphoria of graduating as a doctor subsided, I realised nothing really changed in my life. It didn’t feel as ecstatic as I dreamt myself to be. I went on to do the Housejob, alongwith finding distractions. It’d be a lie if I say I didn’t enjoy treating patients, i did!! But I just knew there had to be more of something for me. What and how? By then, I didn’t know that.

CAN YOU TEACH ME ENGLISH?” Is one wrong question with no answer on my side. No language has a shortcut formula to learn in a week or so, it takes practice and practice.

If you’re interested to improve your English language, for CSS or for any other reason, I have gathered a few tips for you to see. I don’t claim to be an English teacher, just sharing things I have done, since childhood.

My CSS Journey By Dr Hina Sikander (CSS Officer)

My CSS Journey By Dr Hina Sikander (CSS Officer)

“When asked the question What’s ColdWar? back in October 2016, I answered it to be some war fought in winters. That’s where I stood and fast forward 2-3 months, I appeared in CSS exams and passed it in my maiden attempt. (Disclaimer: This is not your random inspirational story regarding CSS )

I have always been a blessed person; have had an excellent academic career all my life, excelled in speeches/debates and other co-curricular activities as well. Allah has always been very kind to me, Alhumdullilah.

I am (rather “was”) a dentist by profession. I was doing my housejob when I came across the idea of doing CSS. I was lucky enough to find a sincere friend who guided me throughout. (Thank you, Abrar!) My preparation during these 2-3 months was very unconventional. Now people ask me which subjects to choose, which books to follow; I can never give them the right answer. I, almost, ‘randomly’ chose the subjects who I thought were interesting, least aware of the scoring trends. I actually didn’t study from any book at all. I joined no academy, went to no teacher, took no mock exams. It was just me and my laptop for those 2 months.

Can CSS be Done in 3 Months (By: Dr Hina Sikander, CSS Officer)

With CSS Exams approaching in few months, the number of times I get this question, daily, is huge.

It is such a vague question and has no answer from my side. Instead, I can tell you what CSS depends upon and if you can get that in 3 years or in 3 months, you’re good to go!

1. BACKGROUND KNOWLEDGE

The timeline depends upon your BACKGROUND KNOWLEDGE. If you generally have a know-how about world & history and you read already, it takes less time. Already present analytical skills help. On the other hand, if you’re at level zero, it’d take a lot more time for you to develop the requisite knowledge and make opinions about events.

Are Academies Necessary for CSS (By: Dr Hina Sikander, CSS Officer)

After answering this question 364839262 times in the inbox, I decided to put it up in the post. Share it with the ones who need to know.

Did I join any academy for CSS❓
No.

Do I think I should have joined❓
YES!

The sole reason I didn’t join any academy is because I was doing my housejob, and there was no such opportunity in my city. If I had any good teacher/coaching sessions near, I would definitely have joined them.

I prefer studying alone, myself. I always found late night study sessions beneficial until I experimented with the early morning ones. Starting day with 4-5am always gave me more productive days with an excessive quantity of hours stretching ahead to be utilised. Try it sometime!
