What ails Pakistan | (Pakistan’s Domestic Affairs) | CSS Current Affairs

By: Yasser Latif Hamdani

While the powers that be and politicians fight for the control of the state, there are festering wounds in our body politic that remain unaddressed. Real issues are persistently ignored and swept under the carpet with devastating results.

On October 25, 2019 yet another Ahmadi “place of worship” was desecrated by the state in Bahawalpur. Countless individuals remain behind bars on blasphemy charges including the young professor Junaid Hafeez. Countless young women from minority communities will continue to converted forcibly to Islam in Sindh. The Federal Capital will see yet another Dharna where inevitably religion will be misused. Fundamental rights such as freedom of religion and freedom of expression will continue be trampled for political expediency and freedom of press will continue to be denied. Meanwhile the economy continues to nosedive. By February 2020, we may even be on the FATF blacklist. Our brightest minds continue to flee the country. Such is the state of affairs in Pakistan in the closing months of 2019.

Kashmir Issue and The Dynamics of International Relations (Sheraz Zaka)

Imran Khan has urged Pakistanis to come out of their homes, offices and workplaces every week for half an hour to show solidarity with the Kashmiri people fighting Indian occupation. One expected him to tell the nation about his government’s latest initiatives on the diplomatic and political fronts to mobilise international support for the Kashmiri struggle for the right of self-determination. More importantly, what are the options for Pakistan to deal with the worsening crisis? We cannot move the international community into action by raising the spectre of a possible nuclear conflagration.

Undoubtedly there has been unprecedented coverage in the western media of Indian brutalities and human rights violations that exposes Modi’s claim of normality returning to the occupied territory. But that is not sufficient to compel other countries to stand with the Kashmiri people. The international community’s silence over the lockdown of more than eight million people and the suppression of their fundamental democratic rights may be driven by geopolitical and economic considerations, but it also reflects our diplomatic failure.

What does Pakistan’s improved ‘Ease of Doing Business’ ranking mean?

By: Dr Syed Akhter

The World Bank’s latest rankings of 190 countries on the Ease of Doing Business (EDB) is out.  Pakistan did well, considering it moved up 28 rungs on the rankings ladder, from 136th place to 108th.  In this latest round, Pakistan is one of 10 countries (Saudi Arabia, Jordan, Togo, Bahrain, Tajikistan, Kuwait, China, India, and Nigeria) that have improved the most across at least three of the 10 factors that go into constructing the EDB rankings. The annual report received wide publicity on its arrival because the rankings matter. They reflect how conducive the regulatory environment is for opening a business, getting a location, accessing finance, dealing with day-to-day operations, and operating in a secure business environment. They also enable both intra-country and inter-country comparisons. They show not only how a country has fared over the years but also where it stacks up in relation to others. The rankings, therefore, are useful not only for domestic policy makers who find out how successful they were in improving the regulatory environment, but also for business executives who need to make decisions about which countries to enter for investment and business expansion.

Businesses look at rankings to make sense of the regulatory environment. Thus, if a country’s ranking is high, the likelihood of being included as a candidate for further review is greater. On the other hand, if the rank is low, decision makers may not even look its way. In this regard, the rankings may serve the purpose of a travel advisory. If a travel advisory is in effect for a country, one would refrain from going there; but if one does need to go there, extra precautions would be warranted.

Prime Minister Imran Khan Complete Speech in the United Nations General Assembly 2019

Prime Minister Imran Khan on Friday addressed the 74th session of the United Nations General Assembly in New York.

The highlight of his more than 45-minute-long speech was intense criticism of India for its annexation of occupied Kashmir and the continued restrictions imposed in the region.

The premier began his wide-ranging, at times apparently extemporaneous speech by saying he feels honoured to represent Pakistan at the world forum.

He said he would not have come to the UN if he did not feel that some “urgent issues” needed to be addressed.

United Nations Security Council (UNSC) on Kashmir (By: Dr.Zeeshan Khan)

Sun Tzu in his book ‘The Art of War’ says that the supreme art of war is to subdue the enemy without fighting. Recently, the painful story of Kashmir again started after revocation Of Article 370 and 35A Of Indian Constitution which was also the part of the manifesto of Indian Ruling BJP. Pakistan’s Prime Minister Imran Khan addressed joint session of his parliament and later parliament of Azad Kashmir to warn Indian Prime Minister Narender Modi against implementation of Hitler’s Nazi Mentality in Indian Occupied Jammu and Kashmir. In IOJ&K, more than twelve days of curfew, presence of extra troops in an already heavily militarised occupied territory. Additionally, sending in of RSS goons, complete communication blackout; with the example of Modi’s earlier ethnic cleansing of Muslims in Gujarat. Will world silently witness another Srebrenica-type massacre and ethnic cleansing of Muslims in IOJ&K? Pakistan wanted to warn that it will have severe repercussions and reactions in all over the world setting off radicalisation and cycles of violence.
