1. Pakistan declares emergency in the face of calamitous floods

• Calling the incessant monsoon rains a `climate-inducted humanitarian crisis of epic proportions`, the Pakistan government on August 25, 2022 officially declared a `national emergency` in light of the rain-induced floods which have so far killed 937 people, including 343 children, and left at least 30 million without shelter.
• As per the latest data compiled by the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA), Sindh reported the highest number of deaths as 306 people lost their lives due to floods and rain-related incidents from June 14 to date.
• Balochistan reported 234 deaths whereas Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and Punjab recorded 185 and 165 deaths, respectively. In Azad Jammu and Kashmir, 37 people were killed while nine deaths were reported in the Gilgit-Baltistan region during the current monsoon rains. In the same period Islamabad reported one death


2. Riyadh confirms $1bn investment in Pakistan

• The Saudi king has directed his government to invest $1 billion in Pakistan `in confirmation of the kingdom`s support of the Pakistani economy` and its people, a report from the Saudi Press Agency (SPA) said on August 25, 2022.
• The investment commitment was conveyed to Foreign Minister Bilawal Bhutto-Zardari during a phone call with his Saudi counterpart Prince Faisal bin Farhan.
• The directive from King Salman bin Abdulaziz came a day after the Qatari government said it would invest $3bn in Pakistan.
• Mr Bhutto-Zardari tweeted earlier on August 25, 2022 about the interaction with Prince Farhan and welcomed the investment commitment. He also said he had briefed his Saudi counterpart on the flood situation in Pakistan


3. Balochistan, Sindh see `more rain than ever` recorded

• In what appeared to be among the most disastrous monsoon spells in six decades, Sindh and Balochistan are witnessing the heaviest rainfall since 1961, as the two provinces recorded 522 and 469 per cent, more than the normal downpour this year, respectively.
• The fresh numbers came from the Met Office, which surprised officials and attracted warnings from environmentalists, who called it the beginning of fresh challenges for the authorities as the much-hyped climate change had finally come knocking.
• `Sindh has received 680.5 millimetres of rain since July when the monsoon season actually began, said a Met official


4. Parvez allocates Rs5 billion for flood victims

• Chief Minister Chaudhry Parvez Elahi on August 25, 2022 set up the `Chief Minister Flood Relief Fund` and allocated Rs5bn for rehabilitation and resettlement of the flood victims of south Punjab.
• Talking to various parliamentarians, he said the entire machinery of the Punjab government was busy helping the flood affectees. `On my instructions, the chief secretary is also monitoring the rescue and relief operations in the affected areas,` he said.
• The CM added that he was grieved over the loss of life and property in Taunsa, DG Khan and Rajanpur areas. Saying that the Punjab government would arrange every available resource to help the flood-hit people, he urged the philanthropists to also come forward to help the people in need.
• Mr Elahi vowed to take every step to rehabilitate and resettle the victims


5. UN announces $3m to its agencies, partners

• As the country is reeling from the unprecedented devastation caused by floods and rains in KP, Balochistan, south Punjab and Sindh, assistance from international donors has started trickling in with the UN announcing on August 25, 2022 $3 million in aid for the flood hit people and the All-Pakistan Chinese Enterprises` Association announcing a donation of Rs15 million to the PM`s Flood Relief Fund.
• The UN Central Emergency Response Fund (CERF) allocated $3 million to UN agencies and partners in Pakistan to respond to floods.
• `The amount will be used for health, nutrition, food security, and water and sanitation services in flood affected areas, focusing on the most vulnerable,` the UN announced on Thursday

6. US hits `Iran-backed group` for third straight day in Syria

• The US military on August 25, 2022 hit several targets in the Syrian city of Mayadin in parts of Deir al Zor province under government control, in the third day of skirmishes with Iran-backed groups, local military sources said.
• They said at least three members of an Iran-aligned militia were killed when they were targeted by a US helicopter as they were about to prepare a rocket launcher in the town which lies along the western bank of the Euphrates.
• Iranian militias have a strong presence in the town and have long targeted the nearby Al Omar oil field on the eastern bank of the Euphrates where the US coalition have their biggest base in Syria


7. Russian attack kills 25 civilians on Ukraine`s Independence Day

• A Russian attack killed 25 civilians when missiles struck a railway station and a residential area in eastern Ukraine, officials in the capital Kyiv said, as the nation marked its Independence Day under heavy shelling.
• The European Union condemned Russia`s deadly bombardment and warned those `responsible for Russian rocket terror will be held accountable`. `The EU strongly condemns another heinous attack by Russia on civilians,` EU foreign policy chief Josep Borrell tweeted.
• The death toll from the Russian attack rose from an initially reported 22 after three more bodies were retrieved from the rubble in the town of Chaplyne as rescue operations there ended, Ukrainian presidential aide Kyrylo Tymoshenko said on Thursday


8. Israel indicts top Islamic Jihad leader

• Israel on August 25, 2022 indicted a senior leader of the Iran-backed Islamic Jihad movement whose arrest led to a brief conflict in Gaza earlier this month and whose detention is likely to fuel tensions.
• The charges against Bassam Al-Saadi, who was arrested on Aug 1 during a raid in the occupied West Bank city of Jenin, include serving in an illegal organisation and incitement, according to a statement from the Israeli military.
• Anticipating retaliation to Al-Saadi`s arrest, Israel launched what it called preemptive strikes against his group in the Gaza Strip, where it is based, leading to three days of Israeli air strikes and Palestinian rockets. He has been held in an Israeli military prison.


9. Japan`s police chief resigns over Abe assassination

• The head of Japan`s National Police Agency announced his resignation on August 25, 2022 after an investigation confirmed `shortcomings` in the security plans for assassinated former prime minister Shinzo Abe.
• Abe, the country`s best-known politician and longest-serving premier, was shot and killed while delivering a stump speech on July 8 in the city of Nara in western Japan.
• `There were shortcomings in the security plans and the risk assessments on which they were based, and direction from the field commander was insufficient,` Itaru Nakamura told reporters


10. Shehbaz announces revival of departmental sports

• Pakistan is reverting back to the structure that saw it deliver its greatest sporting triumphs.
• Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif announced on August 25, 2022 that he was reversing the decision of the previous government to stop public departments, corporations and autonomous bodies from funding sports teams.
• That move by Imran Khan`s government to put an end to the departmental structure and transition towards a regional system had rendered many sportsmen jobless but was never fully implemented.
• PM Shehbaz announced his decision at a ceremony in the honour of Pakistan`s medal winners at the recent Commonwealth Games in England and the Islamic Solidarity Games in Turkey at the Prime Minister Office
