1. Army called in as KP faces flood threat

• As floods continue to devastate the length and breadth of the country resulting in the death of at least 42 more people in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and prompting emergency in several districts, the government decided to deploy the army in all provinces to help the civilian authorities in rescue operations in the calamity-hit areas.
• At present, more than half of Pakistan is under water and millions of people have been rendered homeless as a result of flash flooding generated by abnormal monsoon rains which have entered their eighth spell with no signs of subsiding.
• A notification issued to this effect said that the exact number of troops and area of deployment will be worked out by the respective provincial governments in consultation with the military operations directorate and General Headquarters


2. UN plans $160m Flash Appeal

• The United Nations will on Tuesday launch a $160 million Flash Appeal to help millions of people affected by unprecedented monsoon rains in Pakistan that triggered massive floods.
• Foreign Office spokesman Asim Iftikhar, at his weekly media briefing, said: “A UN Flash Appeal is going to be launched on Tuesday 30 August simultaneously from Geneva and Islamabad.” He said the UN flash appeal was very significant, and it would trigger the international community’s response as well as bilateral assistance from other countries.
• Separately, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif in his interaction with a group of envoys and diplomats on Friday said the government was reaching out to the friendly countries, donors and the international financial institutions for their continued cooperation at this difficult time.


3. Weekly inflation surges to record 44.6pc

• Inflation measured by the Sensitive Price Indicator (SPI) rose sharply during the week that ended on Aug 25, climbing to a record 44.6 per cent year-on-year, the Pakistan Bureau of Statistics data showed on August 26, 2022. The index rose mainly because of higher prices of essential food items mainly tomatoes, onions, pulses and cooking oil and fuel.
• Before this, the highest ever year-on-year increase in the SPI was 42.3pc, recorded for the week ending on Aug 18 and 38.63pc in the week ending on Aug 5.
• The latest data showed that the increase in the SPI was 1.83pc on a week-on-week basis. The highest week-on-week increase in the inflation indicator was recorded at 3.68pc for the week that ended on July 28


4. Navy inducts PNS Taimur into fleet

• The Pakistan Navy on August 26, 2022 inducted its second 054 A/P multi-role frigate PNS Taimur into the fleet.
• The induction ceremony of PNS Taimur, the second of four Type 054-A/P multi-role frigates, was held at the Pakistan Navy Dockyard in Karachi.
• The Chief of Naval Staff, Admiral Mohammed Amjad Khan Niazi, was the chief guest on the occasion.
• The contract for four multi-role frigates (Type 054-A/P) for Pakistan Navy was signed by Pakistan and China in June, 2018. PNS Tughril, the lead ship of Type 054-A/P, was inducted into the PN fleet in January this year


5. Telephone, internet partially restored in 10 Balochistan districts

• Telephone and internet services in at least 10 districts of Balochistan were partially restored, hours after they were suspended due to the damage caused to the cable network.
• Meanwhile, the government has asked mobile telecom companies to enable consumers in the flood-hit areas in all the provinces to make calls, even with zero balance.
• According to the Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA), Quetta, Ziarat, Khuzdar, Loralai, Pashin, Chaman, Panjgur, Zhob, Qila Saifullah and Qila Abdullah suffered a massive internet and telephone blackout on August 26, 2022 noon.
• The PTA said a serious damage to the cable and optical-fibre network due to torrential rains and flash floods caused the outages

6. Belarus planes `modified` to carry N-weapons

• Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko said on August 26, 2022 that his country`s warplanes had been modified to carry nuclear weapons and that Minsk would react immediately if the West caused it any problems.
• Lukashenko said he had agreed the move to modernise Belarusian warplanes with Russian President Vladimir Putin, the Belta news agency reported.
• Belarus, a staunch Russian ally, does not have its own nuclear weapons.
• Lukashenko did not go into details about how a weapons transfer from Moscow, which is using Belarusian territory to mount its military operation against Ukraine, might take place


7. Japan keen to hold Lanka creditors` meeting, but China remains cautious

• Japan is seeking to organise a Sri Lanka creditors` conference, hoping it could help solve the South Asia nation`s debt crisis, but uncertainties cloud the outlook for any talks, three people with knowledge of the planning said.
• Tokyo is open to hosting talks among all the creditor nations aimed at lifting Colombo from its worst debt crisis since independence, but it is not clear whether top creditor China would join and a lack of clarity remains about Sri Lanka`s unances, one source said.
• Japan would be willing to chair such a meeting with China if that would speed up the process for addressing Sri Lanka`s debt, estimated at $6.2 billion on a bilateral basis at the end of 2020, this source said.


8. US presses India to cap prices of Russian oil

• The United States had constructive discussions with Indian officials on a proposal to cap prices of Russian oil, US Deputy Treasury Secretary Wally Adeyemo said on August 26, 2022, as it seeks global support for a proposal to cut Russian revenue.
• India and China have stepped up oil purchases from Russia after the Ukraine invasion at a discount to the market price, at a time Western sanctions have pushed global inflation to the highest levels in years and hurt revenues of European and American companies linked to Russia`s oil trade.
• The Group of Seven aims to have a price-capping mechanism on Russian oil exports in place by Dec 5, when European Union sanctions banning seaborne imports of Russian crude come into force


9. Turkiye dismisses concerns over US sanctions warning

• Turkiye`s finance minister on August 26, 2022 dismissed as `meaningless` concerns among Turkish businesses over a US Treasury warning that they risked being penalised if they maintained commercial ties with Russians under sanctions.
• Nato-member Turkiye has sought to strike a balance between Moscow and Kyiv by criticising Russia`s invasion and sending arms to Ukraine, while opposing the Western sanctions and continuing trade, tourism and investment with Russia.
• Finance Minister Nureddin Nebati said Turkiye was determined to improve economic and trade relations with its neighbours `within a framework that is not subject to sanctions`.


10. Ukraine narrowly escapes nuclear disaster as plant loses power

• The world narrowly escaped a radiation disaster when electricity to Europe`s largest nuclear power plant was cut off for hours, Ukraine`s president said, urging international bodies to act faster to force Russian troops to vacate the site.
• President Volodymyr Zelensky said Russian shelling had sparked fires in the ash pits of a nearby coal power station that disconnected the Zaporozhzhia plant from the power grid. A Russian official said Ukraine was to blame.
• Back-up diesel generators ensured power supply vital for cooling and safety systems at the plant, Zelensky said, praising the Ukrainian technicians who operate the plant under the gaze of the Russian military.
• `If our station staff had not reacted after the black-out, then we would have already been forced to overcome the consequences of a radiation accident,` he said in a video address
