1. `9m poor families` of Punjab to get free electricity

• Punjab Chief Minister Hamza Shehbaz announced free electricity for households consuming up to 100 units, from July.
• The relief programme is supposed to benefit, as claimed by the government, an estimated nine million poor families about half of the population of the province.
• `I was told not to take big decisions without a cabinet to steer under-developed areas out of difficult economic conditions. It could become a NAB (National Accountability Bureau) case, but I said I am ready to face any difficulty to provide relief to the people, the chief minister told a press conference on July 4, 2022.
• The announcement comes in the wake of a ban imposed by the Election Commission of Pakistan on initiating any development project until the July 17 by-polls on 20 Punjab Assembly seats


2. 10 soldiers injured in NW suicide attack

• At least 10 security personnel were injured, three of them seriously, when a suicide bomber attacked a convoy of security forces in North Waziristan tribal district on July 4, 2022.
• Officials said the convoy was going from Mirali to Miramshah, the district headquarters, when a suicide bomber riding a motorcycle blew himself up near one of the vehicles. The attack was carried out near Khadi market in Mirali.
• Deputy Commissioner Shahid Ali Khan confirmed the suicide attack on the convoy, saying 10 security personnel were wounded.
• Earlier, a police official said 15 personnel were injured in the attack


3. CM authorised to ink fiscal responsibility MoU under IMF agreement

• The Khyber Pakhtunkhwa cabinet on Friday authorised Chief Minister Mahmood Khan to sign the memorandum of understanding (MoU) regarding the fiscal responsibility of the federal and provincial government required under the economic bailout agreement with the International Monetary Fund.
• The cabinet met with the chief minister in the chair and ministers and administrative secretaries in attendance.
• The federal government has agreed in the Memorandum of Economic and Fiscal Policies signed with the IMF recently to present a MoU signed by provincial governments to jointly provide around Rs750 billion cash surplus to the centre


4. Sindh fixes jobs quota for transgender persons

• In a historic move, the Sindh Assembly on July 4, 2022 unanimously passed a law fixing half per cent quota for transgender persons at public sector institutions in the province.
• Presenting `The Sindh Civil Servants (Amendment) Bill2021`, Parliamentary Affairs Minister Mukesh Kumar Chawla said that after the enactment of the law, Sindh would be first province to give jobs to transgender persons.
• `At this stage, it`s just a beginning as only 0.5 per cent quota has been fixed for transgender persons. We will ensure this quota is implemented not only in the government sector but also in the private sector,` he added


5. Educational series Chai Chats launched to promote digital literacy

• An online educational series has been launched to educate Pakistani social media users about ways they can make their digital experience better. The plot of the series, titled Chai Chats, revolves around five university friends who encounter difficult situations online that they are able to overcome through grace, friendship and humour.
• The characters inspire and persuade each other to adopt responsible online behaviour.
• Meta, the operator of Facebook, Instagram and WhatsApp, has created the series in collaboration with the Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA)

6. At least 12 dead, dozens injured in 4th of July shootings

• More than a dozen people were killed, and at least 60 were injured, across the United States during the American Independence Day weekend including six who were shot dead during a Fourth of July parade in Chicago on July 4, 2022.
• The shootings followed countrywide protests against alleged police brutality against an unarmed black man, Jayland Walker in Akron, Ohio, last week.
• Investigations showed that policemen fired 60 bullets into Walker as he was running away from them.
• A state of emergency was declared in Akron after hours of protests that started Sunday night


7. Uzbekistan says 18 killed in Karakalpakstan unrest

• Authorities in Uzbekistan said on July 4, 2022 18 people died in clashes in the autonomous Karakalpakstan region when mass protests erupted last week over planned constitutional changes affecting the territory`s status.
• The unrest, pitting protesters against security forces, represented the most significant challenge yet to the rule of President Shavkat Mirziyoyev since he rose to power from the post of prime minister in 2016, when long-serving mentor Islam Karimov died.
• The size of the protest on Friday was unprecedented for the Karakalpakstan region and possibly Uzbekistan


8. Army steps back to make way for civilian govt in Sudan

• Sudan`s coup leader Abdel Fattah al-Burhan said on July 4, 2022 the army would make way for a civilian government and would `not participate` in national talks facilitated by the UN and regional blocs.
• The decision was taken `to make room for political and revolutionary forces and other national factions` to form a civilian government, he said, months after the October coup ousted civilians from a transitional administration.
• Widespread international condemnation and aid cuts followed the putsch, the latest in the impoverished northeast African country


9. Al Jazeera journalist likely killed by Israel, says US

• The United States said on July 4, 2022 that Al Jazeera journalist Shireen Abu Akleh was likely killed by gunfire from Israeli positions but that there was no reason to believe her death was intentional.
• The State Department also said the United States could not make a `definitive conclusion` on the origin of the bullet that killed her on May 11, which was handed over by the Palestinian Authority. `Ballistic experts determined the bullet was badly damaged, which prevented a clear conclusion,` State Department spokesman Ned Price said after what he called `extremely detailed forensic analysis` with outside examiners.
• Abu Akleh`s death provoked a furor, with the Palestinian Authority alleging a war crime, prompting angry denials by Israel, a close US ally which President Joe Biden is visiting in two weeks


10. Ukraine `flag will fly high` at Olympics: IOC chief

• Olympics chief Thomas Bach on Sunday said the organisation would ensure that Ukrainian athletes could compete at the 2024 Games despite the Russian invasion.
• Speaking during a visit to Kyiv to meet Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, Bach pledged to increase the amount of IOC funding for athletes from the war-torn nation.
• That will ensure that at the Olympic Games in Paris 2024 and at the Olympic Winter Games in 2026 in Cortina Milano, `the Ukrainian flag will fly high`, said Bach.
• `The IOC will triple the fund we have been establishing at the very beginning of the Russian invasion in Ukraine from $2.5 million to $7.5 million,` he added
