1. PM suggests grand dialogue among all stakeholders

• Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has called for a `grand dialogue` involving all stakeholders for the sake of the country`s progress by keeping sectors like education, health and industries above petty politics.
• `Shouldn`t we learn a lesson even after 75 years [of winning the independence] and continue to do petty politics?` he asked, while opening the Indus Hospital, a private charity facility, here on Sunday.
• He emphasised that none of the stakeholders should indulge in politicking on the development sector so that [consistent policies] might take the country forward on the road to progress.


2. Pakistan slams BJP for remarks against Holy Prophet

• President Dr Arif Alvi and Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif have strongly condemned the derogatory remarks recently made by two leaders of India`s Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) against the Holy Prophet (PBUH).
• `I condemn in the strongest possible words hurtful comments of India`s BJP leader about our beloved Prophet (PBUH). [I have] said it repeatedly India under Modi is trampling religious freedoms and persecuting Muslims. The world should take note and severely reprimand India, the premier said in a Twitter posting on Sunday.
• `Our love for the Holy Prophet(PBUH) is supreme.
• All Muslims can sacrifice their life for the love and respect of their Holy Prophet (PBUH),` he said


3. ECP to accept address shown on CNIC only

• The Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) has abolished the option of more than two addresses of voters other than those mentioned on their Computerised National Identity Cards (CNICs) in an attempt to check fake votes, according to a senior official.
• However, voters can change their address anytime by following set procedure of the commission.
• The social media was inundated with complaints last week that the ECP had changed the voter registration data of several citizens without informing them, with most claiming that their polling stations had been moved by the election watchdog to inconvenient locations much farther than their previous allocations.


4. Seven `terrorists` killed in operations

• Security forces killed seven terrorists during two intelligence based operations in Janikhel subdivision of Bannu district and Hassenkhel area of North Waziristan tribal district on June 5, 2022, the military said.
• The Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR), the armed forces` media affairs department, said in a statement that members of security forces conducted an IBO in Janikhel area of Bannu district, killing five terrorists.
• Another operation was carried out in Hassenkhel area of North Waziristan in which two terrorists were killed


5. BJP suspends official over comments about Islam

• India`s ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on June 5, 2022 said it had suspended BJP spokeswoman Nupur Sharma in response to comments she made during a TV debate about the Holy Prophet (peace be upon him).
• The BJP said in a statement on its website that the party respected all religions.
• `The BJP strongly denounces insult of any religious personallties of any religion.` Sharma said on Twitter she had said some things in response to comments made about a Hindu god but it was never an intention to hurt anyone`s religious feelings. `If my words have caused discomfort or hurt religious feelings of anyone whatsoever, I hereby unconditionally withdraw my statement

6. N. Korea fires ballistic missiles, prompting joint military drill by Japan, US

• North Korea fired eight short-range ballistic missiles towards the sea off its east coast on June 5, 2022, likely its largest single test, a day after South Korea and the United States ended joint military drills.
• South Korea`s Joint Chiefs of Staff said that at least eight missiles were fired from the Sunan area of the North Korean capital Pyongyang and they flew between 110 km-600 km at altitudes between 25 km to 90 km.
• In response to North Korea`s missiles launch, Japan`s Self Defence Force issued a statement that Japan and the United States had conducted a joint military exercise


7. Kazakhstan holds referendum to move past Nazarbayev era

• Polling stations closed across Kazakhstan on June 5, 2022 for a referendum to overhaul the constitution after deadly un rest ended founding leader Nursultan Nazarbayev`s three-decade grip on Central Asia`s richest country.
• The January bloodshed which grew out of peaceful protests over a spike in car fuel prices left more than 230 people dead and prompted authorities to call in troops from a Russia-led security bloc.
• The drive for a `New Kazakhstan` in the wake of the violence has come from the man that Nazarbayev handpicked to replace him as president in 2019, Kassym-Jomart Tokayev.
• Tokayev, 69, describes the snap referendum as a shift from `super-presidential` rule that will strengthen parliament


8. US-backed group suggests Syria use air defences against Turkey

• The US-baclced Syrian Democratic Forces would coordinate with Syrian government troops to fend off any Turkish invasion of the north, the SDF commander said on June 5, 2022, adding Damascus should use its air defence systems against Turkish planes.
• Ankara has vowed a new offensive on swathes of northern Syria controlled by the SDF, a Kurdish-led alliance that is spearheaded by the Kurdish People`s Protection Units (YPG).
• The new threats have highlighted the complex web of ties in northern Syria: while Turkey considers the YPG a terrorist organisation, Syrian Kurdish forces are backed by Washington and have also coordinated with Syria`s government and its ally Russia


9. Blasts from Russian missile strikes rock Kyiv

• Russia struck Ukraine`s capital Kyiv with missiles early on Sunday for the first time in more than a month, while Ukrainian officials said a counter-attack on the main battlefield in the east had retaken half of the city of Sievierodonetsk.
• Dark smoke could be seen from many miles away after the attack on two outlying districts of Kyiv. Ukraine said the strike hit a rail car repair works. Moscow said it had destroyed tanks sent by Eastern European countries to Ukraine


10. Nadal wins 14th French Open and record-extending 22nd Grand Slam

• Rafael Nadal won a 14th French Open and record-extending 22nd Grand Slam title on June 5, 2022 with a straight-sets rout of Casper Ruud to become the oldest male champion at Roland Garros and he vowed to `keep fighting` In a disappointing final, 36-year-old Nadal won 6-3, 6-3, 6-0 with victory coming 17 years to the day since he claimed his first French Open as a 19-year-old in 2005.
• Nadal won the last 11 games of the final and is now two Slams ahead of old rivals Novak Djokovic and Roger Federer with Sunday`s victory coming against all the odds.
• Nadal, the oldest winner in Paris since a 34-year-old Andre Gime no in 1972, had not been certain of taking part after a chronic left foot injury, which has plagued him through out his career, nared up again
