1. Islamabad`s participation in China-hosted event `blocked by New Delhi`

• India obstructed Pakistan`s participation in a conference hosted by China last week.
• Pakistan`s absence from the `High level Dialogue on Global Development` on the sidelines of BRICS summit on Friday prompted speculations about the reasons for not being invited to the multilateral event.
• Foreign Office, while clarifying the situation on Monday, said: `Regrettably one member blocked Pakistan`s participation.` The FO did not name any country, but a diplomatic source on the background confirmed that it was India.
• Besides the five members of BRICS Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa the event held in a virtual format was participated by Algeria, Argentina, Egypt, Indonesia, Iran, Kazakhstan, Senegal, Uzbekistan, Cambodia, Ethiopia, Fiji, Malaysia and Thailand

2. Sindh PA passes budget after midnight

• The Sindh Assembly, in the early hours of Tuesday quickly passed the Rs1.713 trillion tax-free budget for financial year 2022-23 in the presence of MQM-P members and the absence of lawmakers belonging to the PTI, GDA and two other opposition parties, after adjourning and reconvening the house post-midnight.
• Earlier in the day, the house had one of the lengthiest sittings lasting over 12 hours as Leader of the Opposition Halim Adil Sheikh spoke for over five hours, mainly criticising the provincial government and praising PTI chairman and former prime minister Imran Khan. Chief Minister Syed Murad Ali Shah also spoke for more than one hour.
• The budget was passed in 10-minute proceedings after the house hurriedly approved all 78 demands for grants on supplementary expenditure for 2021-22 moved by the chief minister, who also holds the portfolio of finance

3. PM orders coal import from Afghanistan

• In a bid to produce cheap electricity to provide relief to domestic consumers and industries, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif on June 27, 2022 directed the authorities concerned to import coal from Afghanistan.
• Presiding over a meeting, the prime minister approved the import of high-quality coal from Afghanistan in rupees instead of dollars to save the country`s precious foreign exchange.
• `This will not only generate cheap electricity but also help save the country`s precious foreign exchange,` he was quoted by the Prime Minister Office as saying

4. $108m debt suspension signed with France

• Pakistan on June 27, 2022 signed a debt relief agreement with France for suspension of $107 million loan under the G-20 Debt Service Suspension Initiative (DSSI) framework allowed to the poor nations to absorb Covid-19 shock.
• This amount, initially repayable between July and December 2021 will now be repaid over a period of six years, including one year grace period in semi-annual installments.
• The agreement was signed by Secretary Economic Affairs Mian Asad Hayaud Din and French Ambassador in Islamabad Nicolas Galey.
• The GOP has already signed agreements with the French Republic for suspension of $261 million. Due to the support extended by the development partners of Pakistan, the G-20 DSSI had provided the fiscal space to deal with the country`s urgent health and economic needs

5. GB presents Rs119bn budget amid funding crisis

• The Gilgit Baltistan government on June 27, 2022 presented the budget for the fiscal year 2022-23 with a total outlay of Rs119.3 billion. The annual budget was presented in the Gilgit Baltistan Assembly.
• Finance minister Javed Ali Manwa presented the budget during a special session chaired by Deputy Speaker Nazir Ahmed Advocate.
• Presenting the budget, Mr Manwa said Rs61.4 billion had been proposed for ongoing expenditures while Rs47.8 billion had been set aside for new development schemes.
• Interestingly, opposition parties` members, including from Pakistan Peoples Party, Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz and Jamiat Ulema -i-Islam Fazl remained calm during the budget speech

6. Nadra signs Sehat Sahulat deal with ministry

• The National Database and Registration Authority (Nadra) has signed an agreement with Ministry of National Health Services Regulations and Coordination for swift service delivery to health card holders.
• Nadra will provide a `centralised information management system` for permanent residents of Punjab to benefit from the Sehat Sahulat programme.
• The agreement was signed by Nadra officials and health authorities of federal and Punjab governments at the Nadra headquarters.
• The system will enable the people of Punjab to avail free healthcare services by using the computerised national identity card as a health card at authorised government and private hospitals

7. US top court allows prayers at school premises

• Conservative judges of the US Supreme Court acted again on Monday, this time reinterpreting a constitutional amendment that prevents government officials from publicly displaying their faith at the workplace.
• At issue was whether a public-school employee praying alone but in view of students was a violation of the First Amendment of the US Constitution, which forbids a government and its employees from publicly displaying their religious preferences.
• The First Amendment`s Establishment Clause prohibits the government from making any law `respecting an establishment of religion.` The clause also prohibits government actions that unduly favor one religion over another. A government employee praying at a government property is also considered a violation of this clause

8. Qatar to host indirect Iran-US talks on N-deal revival

• Qatar will host indirect talks between Iran and the United States in coming days, Iranian media reported on June 27, 2022, amid a push by the European Union to break a months-long impasse in negotiations to reinstate a 2015 nuclear pact.
• `Iran has chosen Qatar to host the talks because of Doha`s friendly ties with Tehran,` Mohammad Marandi, a media adviser to Iran`s top nuclear negotiator, told the ISNA news agency.
• Iran`s Tasnim news agency, quoting an unnamed foreign ministry source, reported that Iran`s chief nuclear negotiator Ali Bagheri would visit Qatar on Tuesday for `negotiations on lifting sanctions`, and that the US-Iranian indirect talks would be held there

9. G7 vows to stand by Ukraine `for as long as it takes`

• The Group of Seven club of wealthy nations on June 27, 2022 vowed to stand by Ukraine `for as long as it takes`, promising to tighten the squeeze on Russia`s finances with new sanctions that include a proposal to cap the price of Russian oil.
• The announcement came after Ukraine`s President Volodymyr Zelensky, addressing G7 leaders at their summit in the Bavarian Alps via a video link, asked for weapons and air defences to gain the upper hand in the war against Russia within months.
• Zelensky also urged the world powers to do their utmost to help end Russia`s invasion by the end of the year.
• The G7 statement aimed to signal that its members were ready to back Ukraine for the long haul, at a time when soaring inflation and energy shortages fuelled by Russia`s invasion have tested the West`s sanctions resolve.

10. Missile strike on crowded mall kills 10 in Ukraine

• A Russian missile strike on a crowded mall in the central Ukrainian city of Kremenchuk killed at least 10 people and injured more than 40 on Monday, a regional governor said.
• `Ten dead and more than 40 people have been injured.
• This is currently the situation in Kremenchuk due to the missile strike,` said Dmytro Lunin, the governor of the Poltava region where Kremenchuk is located.
• Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said `over a thousand civilians` were in the mall when the missiles struck the city, which had a pre-war population of 220,000 people
