1. Hamza Shehbaz finally takes oath as the 21st CM of Punjab

• After weeks of uncertainty and court cases, PML-N`s Hamza Shehbaz on April 30, 2022 finally managed to take oath as the 21st chief minister of Punjab following court orders in this regard, while the Pakistan Tehreek-i-Insaf (PTI) remains in denial mode, calling the CM`s election `unconstitutional and disputed` and insisting Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif`s son cannot be accepted as the chief executive of the province.
• Soon after Hamza was sworn in and assumed his office at 8-Club Road (CM secretariat), the Punjab chief secretary notified that interim chief minister Usman Buzdar ceased to hold office with immediate effect. Hamza was presented with a guard of honour on his maiden visit to the secretariat.
• As he left his Model Town residence for the Governor House to take oath from National Assembly Speaker Raja Pervaiz Ashraf, Punjab Governor Omar Sarfraz Cheema restored Mr Buzdar as a full-fledged CM along with his entire cabinet. However, the Services and General Administration Department (S&GAD) did not notify the move


2. PM, Saudi prince `talk shop` in Jeddah

• Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif met Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman in Jeddah on April 30, 2022 and discussed ways to strengthen economic, investment and trade ties between the two countries.
• During the meeting at the Royal Palace, the two leaders held wide-ranging discussions on issues of mutual interest, along with global and regional issues.
• According to a statement issued by the Prime Minister`s Office, upon arrival at the Royal Palace, the prime minister and his delegation received a guard of honour.
• The premier was in Saudi Arabia on a three-day visit his first since he assumed office along with a delegation including Bilawal Bhutto Zardari, Miftah Ismail, Nawabzada Shahzain Bugti, Marriyum Aurangzeb, Khawaja Asif, Chaudhry Salik Hussain, Dr Khalid Maqbool Siddiqui, Mohsin Dawar and Maulana Tahir Ashrafi


3. 86 attacks on press recorded in 2021-22

• At least 86 cases of attacks and violations against media and its practitioners, including journalists, took place in Pakistan over the course of one year between May 2021 and April 2022.
• While the overall number of documented violations in the preceding year have gone down several notches, there is a continuing trend of targeting journalists working for digital media, according to the research and analysis report by Freedom Network, an award-winning Pakistan-based media rights watchdog that tracks violations against journalists and attacks on freedom of expression on an ongoing basis.
• The report, released to mark the World Press Freedom Day observe d globally on May 3, reveals that the state actors continue to be the largest threat source for journalists in Pakistan in a period marked by a dramatic escalation of coercion by the former Imran Khan government resulting in violence, legal cases, abductions, detentions and threats


4. Murree Tourism Police launched to facilitate visitors

• Murree Tourism Police was on April 30, 2022 launched to facilitate and protect tourists in the resort station on the instructions of the inspector general of police (IGP), Punjab.
• Regional Police Officer (RPO) Rawalpindi Ashfaq Ahmad Khan and City Police Officer (CPO) Rawalpindi Omar Saeed Malik inaugurated the tourism police at Lower Topa.
• The tourism police initially included 150 officers and personnel, a special tourist van, three specially prepared vehicles, 25 motorcycles and a horse riding squad.
• Police officials said the tourism police was launched after the Murree tragedy of January 8, 2022


5. FBR collects record Rs4.86tr

• The Federal Board of Revenue (FBR) raised a record Rs4.858 trillion in the first 10 months of the current fiscal year, exceeding the target of Rs4.619tr by Rs239 billion, provisional data compiled by the tax body showed on April 30, 2022.
• Compared with the revenue collection of Rs3.778tr in the same period in 2020-21, a 28.6 per cent growth was posted in the July April period. This will provide a cushion to the 13-party coalition government for the continuation of subsidies on petroleum prices in the next two months.
• Unprecedented in the FBR`s history to consecutively surpass the monthly collection targets in the first eight months of 202122. As a result, no change in petroleum products was made for the next 15 days by the new government as well

6. Australian leader decries China`s interference

• Australia`s prime minister accused China on April 30, 2022 of `form`, or a record, on interference in foreign politics, after his home minister said Beijing`s unveiling of a security deal with the nearby Solomon Islands was timed to influence an election.
• With most polls showing Scott Morrison`s conservative coalition headed for a loss in the May 21 election, it has sought to highlight its national security credentials, such as a tough approach to China.
• `We are very aware of the influence the Chinese government seeks to have in this country, Morrison told reporters in Tasmania. `There is form on foreign interference in Australia


7. Tory MP resigns after admitting watching porn in parliament

• A lawmaker from Britain`s ruling Conservative party announced on April 30, 2022 he will resign, after admitting he had deliberately watched pornography on his mobile phone in the House of Commons chamber.
• Neil Parish, who represents a seat in southwest England, said he was standing down and triggering a by-election in the Tory stronghold after what he called an indefensible moment of `total madness`.
• `I think I must have taken complete leave of my senses and my sensibilities and in a sense of decency, everything,` he told the BBC in a candid interview aired on Saturday announcing his resignation


8. Turkey air force pulls out of military exercise in Athens

• Turkey`s air force has pulled out of a military exercise scheduled to be held in Greece next month, security sources said on April 30, 2022 alleging that preparatory documents singled out Ankara.
• The military exercise dubbed `Tiger Meet` is intended to promote solidarity between the participating states` fleets and is held annually.
• This year, it will take place in Athens between May 9 and 20.
• Turkish security sources said host countries draft a text each year made up of technical regulations ahead of the planned exercise and this year, Greece targeted Turkey in the said document


9. No sanctions, but US wants Delhi to break from Russia

• US Secretary of State Antony J. Blinken has suggested encouraging India to voluntarily disengage from Russia instead of slapping sanctions on New Delhi for buying oil and weapons from Moscow.
• `Where we can, it is far preferable to get countries to voluntarily not engage in these practices, and that`s where our diplomacy is focused,` Mr Blinken said at one of his several congressional hearings in Washington this week.
• Democratic senators urged Secretary Blinken at these hearings to put more pressure on India for continuing to do business with Russia despite its invasion of Ukraine


10. ANP lawmaker Waqar dies of cardiac arrest

• Awami National Party MPA Waqar Ahmad Khan died of cardiac arrest here on April 30, 2022.
• Mr Ahmad belonged to Shah Dheri area and was the nephew of ANP Swat central joint secretary Khan Nawab.
• The lawmaker was elected MPA from the PK-7 constituency during the last general elections.
• He was also elected as a member of the provincial assembly in the general elections of 2008. He remained part of the then ANP government in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa
