1. Alvi refuses to appoint new governor, returns summary

• Punjab continues to face political, administrative and constitutional crises as President Dr Arif Alvi on May 21, 2022 once again refused to accept the summary sent to him by Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif regarding the appointment of a new governor in Punjab.
• Dr Alvi asked the PM to `reconsider` his advice about appointment of PML-N leader Baleeghur Rehman as the new governor, declaring `Omar Sarfraz Cheema still holds the office`, according to an official announcement by the president`s secretariat.
• However, sources in the PML-N told Dawn that immediately after receiving the president`s communication on Saturday, the PM again moved the summary for Mr Rehman`s appointment as the governor. Even if the president did not accept the summary again, Mr Rehman would become governor after 10 days under the law, the sources explained

2. ITI train finally reaches Turkey after two months

• The fourth Istanbul-bound freight train, which departed during the third week of March from Pakistan, has finally reached Turkey, a Pakistan Railways (PR) official said on May 21, 2022.
• The train which may take another three to four days to reach its final destination, i.e. Istanbul was stuck at Taftan after the freight forwarder in Turkey allegedly refused to send wagons for the transhipment of goods at Zahidan towards Istanbul.
• Pakistan Railways said that to avert a similar situation in future, all freight forwarders have been instructed to proceed with the operation by signing a formal agreement with freight forwarders in Turkey and Iran before booking goods

3. Islamabad gets new IGP as top bureaucrats reshuffled

• The federal government on May 21, 2022 removed the inspector general of Islamabad police and the Establishment Division also notified promotion and posting/transfer of top bureaucrats.
• According to notifications issued by the Establishment Division, Ahsan Younas has been removed from the post of IGP Islamabad and his services have been placed at the disposal of the Punjab police.
• Mr Younas, a BS-20 officer of Police Service of Pakistan (PSP), had earlier served as the city police officer Rawalpindi. The Establishment Division transferred him to Khyber Pakhtunkhwa but he managed to stay in the garrison city beyond the prescribed period and was then appointed as the IGP Islamabad by the previous government of PTI in December 2021.The government on Saturday posted Akbar Nasir Khan, a BS-20 PSP officer, as the IGP Islamabad. He was serving in the National Counter Terrorism Authority

4. Govt removes deputy chief of Planning Commission

• The PML-N coalition government on Saturday removed Dr Mohammad Jehanzeb Khan as the deputy chairman of the Planning Commission (PC) ahead of the completion of his three-year tenure and the additional charge was given to Minister for Planning Ahsan Iqbal.
• Dr Khan was appointed as Planning Commission deputy chairman on Aug 1, 2020 for a period of three years after his retirementasaBPS-220fficerofthePakistanAdministrative Service. Before his retirement, he was first appointed to the commission as its deputy chairman on August 3, 2019.
• The post of deputy chairman was reverted to a federal secretary after a gap of 23 years

5. Biden, Yoon signal military drills due to N. Korea `threat`

• US President Joe Biden and South Korea`s new President Yoon Suk-yeol signalled on May 21, 2022 an expanded military presence in response to the `threat` from North Korea, while also offering to help the isolated regime face a Covid-19 outbreak.
• After meeting in Seoul on Biden`s first trip to Asia as president, the two leaders said in a statement that `considering the evolving threat posed by` North Korea, they `agree to initiate discussions to expand the scope and scale of combined military exercises and training on and around the Korean peninsula`.
• The possible beefing up of joint exercises comes in response to North Korea`s growing belligerance, with a blitz of sanctions-busting weapons tests this year as fears grow that Kim Jong Un will order a nuclear test while Biden is in Asia

6. Women TV presenters defy Taliban order to cover faces on air

• Women presenters on Afghanistan`s leading TV channels went on air on May 21, 2022 without covering their faces, defying a Taliban order that they conceal their appearance to comply with the group`s policy.
• Since surging back to power last year the Taliban have imposed a slew of restrictions on civil society, many focused on reining in the rights of women and girls.
• Earlier this month Afghanistan`s supreme leader Hibatullah Akhundzada issued a diktat for women to cover up fully in public, including their faces, ideally with the traditional burqa

7. Russia halts gas supplies to Finland

• Russia on May 21, 2022 stopped providing natural gas to neighbouring Finland, which has angered Moscow by applying for Nato membership, after the Nordic country refused to pay supplier Gazprom in rubles.
• Following Russia`s Feb 24 invasion of Ukraine, Moscow has asked clients from `unfriendly countries` including EU member states to pay for gas in rubles, a way to sidestep Western financial sanctions against its central bank.
• Gazprom said in a statement on Saturday that it had `completely stopped gas deliveries` as it had not received ruble payments from Finland`s state-owned energy company Gasum `by the end of the working day on May 20`

8. Labor Party leader Albanese claims Australia election victory

• Australia`s opposition leader Anthony Albanese claimed victory on May 21, 2022 in national elections.
• `The Australian people have voted for change. I am humbled by this victory,` he told cheering supporters in Sydney.
• Albanese vowed to make Australia a renewable energy `superpower`, give indigenous people a voice in national policy-making, and make equal opportunity for women a national priority.
• Albanese recalled his childhood, brought up by a single mother in Sydney public housing

9. Six killed in Iraq drone strikes blamed on Turkey

• Drone strikes targeting Kurdish rebels killed at least six people, including three civilians, in northern Iraq on May 21, 2022, local officials and the rebels said, blaming Turkey for the attack.
• Turkey routinely carries out attacks in northern Iraq, where the outlawed Kurdistan Workers` Party (PKK) has bases and training camps.
• Saturday`s drone strikes targeted mountainous areas of Chamchamal district, west of the city of Sulaimaniyah, and the Makhmur refugee camp, the officials said.
• There was no immediate comment from the Turkish authorities

10. Azhar smashes double ton for Worcestershire

• Veteran Pakistan batter Azhar All made an unbeaten double century as he helped Worcestershire rewrite the record books in an English County Championship match against Leicestershire on Friday.
• Azhar and former England U-19 international Jack Haynes put on 281 for the third wicket -a record partnership against Leicestershire, surpassing the 278 by Cyril Walters and Harold Gibbons in 1934.
