1. Balochistan votes in LG polls amid sporadic violence

• Independent candidates were leading in the local government elections held on May 29, 2022 in 32 districts of Balochistan, unofficial results suggested.
• By late night on Sunday, independent candidates had won more than 1,000 seats in municipal corporations, municipal committees and union councils, followed by Jamiat Ulema-i-Islam (JUI-F) winning around 100 seats and the ruling Balochistan Awami Party (BAP) securing 71 seats.
• Pashtoonkhwa Milli Awami Party bagged 39 seats, National Party 33, Pakistan Peoples Party 26, and Balochistan National Party-Mengal (BNP-M)18.
• Polling for local government elections in the 4,456 urban and rural wards of Balochistan`s 32 districts ended at 5pm amid reports of sporadic violence trickling in from various parts of the province.

2. Islamabad reaffirms pledge to keep working for global peace

• Pakistan on May 29, 2022 reiterated its commitment to maintain peace and stability in the world, particularly in South Asian region, and recalled its capability to ward of f any aggression and adventurism.
• The civil and military leadership of the country vowed to largely contribute to the United Nation`s peacekeeping missions across the globe.
• Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif said Pakistan was the largest contributor to the UN peacekeeping missions in the world as it had so far provided about 200,000 personnel.
• `Such a gesture also manifested Pakistan`s desire and efforts for peace,` the prime minister said in a message on International Day of the United Nations Peacekeepers observed on Monday

3. Pakistan jumps six places on tourism index

• Pakistan has made a big jump on the International Travel and Tourism Development Index by moving up six places, the World Economic Forum said in its latest report released on May 29, 2022.
• The 2021 edition of the index, `Rebuilding for a sustainable and resilient future`, placed Pakistan at 83rd place out of 117 countries. The previous edition, released in 2019, had placed Pakistan at the 89th spot.
• Aftabur Rehman Rana, Managing Director of the Pakistan Tourism Development Corporation (PTDC), said the country`s improved standing constituted a `significant progress`.
• The PTDC chief said the federal and provincial governments had made tremendous efforts for upgrading the tourism infrastructure, the business environment, the safety and security factor, as well as health and hygiene

4. Indus water talks to resume today amid warnings of scarcity

• Indus water talks between Pakistan and India are set to resume here on May 30, 2022 (today) amid warnings of an imminent scarcity in the region spurred by climate change and callous abuse.
• The overarching background of depleting resources and melting glaciers could add urgency to the two-day talks and a Pakistan delegation, headed by the commissioner for Indus waters, Syed Muhammad Mehr Ali Shah, arrived here on Sunday to resume the conversation.
• Sources said an improved atmosphere was expected for the sensitive and intense dialogue, which water sharing always involves.
• The two sides held their last meeting in Islamabad in March, where Pakistan`s objections to Indian hydel projects were raised as white heat scorched both countries. Floods and interdicted flow of water are two sides of the problem, both natural and man-made

5. `Computerised registration of tobacco sellers being conducted in capital`

• Computerised registration of tobacco sellers was going on in the capital, following which shopkeepers would not be able to sell tobacco products to minors, particularly near educational institutions.
• This information was shared with participants by Excise and Taxation Department Director Bilal Azam at an event organised by the department in connection with `World No Tobacco Day`.
• Mr Azam said over 500 places had been declared smoke-free zones, including publicparks, high-rise buildings, public transport and restaurants.
• Deputy Commissioner Irfan Memon said: `The Excise Office has conducted record operations against smuggled cigarettes and there is a complete ban on sale of cigarettes in educational institutions. We have introduced a tobacco control law. Other provinces are also going to introduce the Tobacco Vendor Act soon

6. India withdraws warning on national biometric ID after online panic

• India on May 29, 2022 withdrew a warning not to share photocopies of the national biometric identity card after the announcement caused widespread panic on social media.
• The Aadhaar card, which has a unique number tied to an individual`s fingerprints, face and eye scan, aims to block theft and leakage in India`s welfare schemes. But critics fear it could spawn a surveillance state.
• The press information bureau withdrew the warning two days after issuing it, saying the release was published in the context of an attempt to misuse an edited Aadhaar card, and was being withdrawn `in view of the possibility of the misinterpretation.` The new statement said the Aadhaar ecosys-tem had adequate features to protect the identity and privacy of users, and that users are only advised to exercise `normal prudence`

7. Erdogan opposes entry of `terror-supporting` countries in Nato

• Turkish President Tayyip Erdogan said talks with Finland and Sweden about their joining Nato were not at the `expected level` and Ankara cannot say yes to `terrorism-supporting` countries, state broadcaster TRT Haber reported on May 29, 2022.
• Turkey has objected to Sweden and Finland joining the Western defence alliance, holding up a deal that would allow for a historic enlargement following Russia`s invasion of Ukraine. Erdogan`s latest comments indicated his opposition continued.
• `For as long as Tayyip Erdogan is the head of the Republic of Turkey, we definitely cannot say `yes` to countries which support terrorism entering Nato,` he was cited as telling reporters on his return from a trip to Azerbaijan on Saturday

8. Zelensky visits east Ukraine as Russia makes push in Donbas

• Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky on May 29, 2022 made his first trip to the country`s war-torn east since the launch of Moscow`s invasion, as Russian forces tightened their grip around key cities in the Donbas region.
• Zelensky`s office posted a video on Telegram of him wearing a bulletproof vest and being shown destroyed buildings in Kharkiv and its surroundings, from where Russian forces have retreated in recent weeks.
• Since failing to capture the capital Kyiv in the early stages of the war, Russia has shifted its focus to the eastern Donbas region as it attempts to consolidate areas under its control

9. Emergency lifted in Sudan

• Sudan`s army chief Abdel Fattah al-Burhan lifted on May 29, 2022 a state of emergency imposed since last year`s military coup, the ruling sovereign council said.
• Burhan `issued a decree lifting the state of emergency nationwide,`the council said in a statement.
• The order was made `to prepare the atmosphere for a fruitful and meaningful dialogue that achieves stability for the transitional period`, it added.
• Meanwhile, the trial of four people accused of fatally stabbing a senior police officer during anti-coup protests opened in the capital Khartoum on Sunday

10. Shouting `death to Arabs`, Israelis march through Muslim quarter

• Thousands of flag waving Israeli nationalists marched through the Muslim quarter of Jerusalem`s Old City on May 29, 2022 in a deeply divisive parade that Palestinian factions warned could reignite their conflict with Israel.
• Police earlier fired stun grenades at Palestinians who pelted them with stones at the Al Aqsa mosque compound as record numbers of Jews visited the holy site, some of them appearing to pray in defiance of a long-standing ban.
• The annual Jerusalem procession marks Israel`s capture of the Old City in the 1967 Middle East war and draws thousands of cheering, chanting participants to its narrow, stone streets
