1. Senate passes Zainab Alert Bill with amendments

• The Senate on March 4, 2020 passed with amendments the Zainab Alert, Response and Recovery Bill, 2019, aimed at deterring violence against children, more than two years after abduction, rape and murder of nine year-old girl Zainab Ansari by a serial killer.
• The bill already approved by the National Assembly in January will go back to it and will become law if passed by the lower house of parliament with amendments, following an assent by the president.
• The bill was moved in the Senate by Minister for Parliamentary Affairs Azam Swati on behalf of Minister for Human Rights Dr Shireen Mazari.
• The ambit of the bill, which was earlier limited to Islamabad, has now been increased to cover the entire country. Under another amendment, station house officers (SHOs) will be bound to register first information reports (FIRs) within two hours after receiving a complaint about a missing or abducted child. The SHOs found to have failed to do so will face up to two-year imprisonment and a fine of up to Rs100,000, besides losing job


2. PM approves establishment of 10 SEZs in four provinces

• Prime Minister Imran Khan on March 4, 2020 at two separate meetings approved establishment of 10 special economic zones (SEZs) in the four provinces and privatisation of 33 state entities/lands during current fiscal year.
• Five of the 10 SEZs will be established in Punjab (Bhalwal, Bahawalpur, Rahim Yar Khan, Vehari and Allama Iqbal SEZ), two each in Sindh (Naushahro Feroze and Bhulari) and Balochistan (Bostan and Hub) and one in Khyber Pahtunkhwa (Rashakai).
• Presiding over a meeting of the board of approval for the SEZs, Prime Minister Khan said the purpose of establishment of special economic zones was to provide facilities and incentives to the business community


3. China to give 50 drones, pesticides to fight locusts

• China has agreed to assist Pakistan to combat the menace of locust in various parts of the country with $5 million technical support besides providing 50 drones and 300,000 litres of pesticides to carry out spray in affected areas of Sindh, Balochistan and Punjab.
• Secretary of National Food Security and Research Muhammad Hashim Popalzal told that the Chinese government had decided to send drones urgently, and the first batch of drones would reach Pakistan on March 9.
• The use of fixed and rotary wing unmanned aerial vehicles (UAV), commonly called drones, are potential means of improving desert locust monitoring, early warning and rapid control, and reducing costs of survey and control operations


4. Pakistan ranked least internet inclusive country in S. Asia: report

• Pakistan has been ranked 76th out of 100 countries on the inclusive internet index 2020 released by the Economist Intelligence Unit (EIU), falling into the last quartile of the global index overall.
• The `Inclusive Internet Index` benchmarks countries on the internet`s availability, affordability, relevance and the readiness of people to use it. The annual report is commissioned by Facebook.
• In its fourth year, the index covered 100 countries, representing 91pc of the world`s population and 96pc of global GDP.
• On a scale of one (best) to 100 (worst), Pakistan stood at the 76th place out of the total countries surveyed


5. OIC supports Kashmir settlement under UN resolutions: envoy

• The Organisation of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) supports peacefully negotiated settlement of the longstanding issue of Kashmir in accordance with the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) resolutions, said Yousef M.
• Al Dobeay, OIC secretary general`s special envoy on Jammu and Kashmir on March 4, 2020.
• He made this statement at a brief media talk as well as during his meeting with AJK President Sardar Masood Khan at the AJK President`s House.
• Dobeay arrived in Muzaffarabad at the head of a high level delegation `Along with the Palestine issue, Kashmir issue also tops the OIC agenda… Both issues are important for Muslim Ummah,` he said


6. US airstrike targets Taliban days after Doha deal

• The United States launched an airstrike against Taliban fighters to defend Afghan forces on March 4, 2020, an American military spokesman said, as violence spirals after a string of deadly attacks by the insurgents, throwing the country`s nascent peace process into grave doubt.
• News of the airstrike in southern Helmand province the first in 11 days came hours after US President Donald Trump told reporters he had had a `very good` chat with the Taliban political chief, who on Saturday signed a historic deal with Washington to withdraw foreign forces.
• Since the signing in Doha of the agreement, however, the militants have ramped up violence against Afghan forces, ending a partial truce and casting a pall over peace talks between Kabul and the Taliban, due to begin on March 10


7. Croatian designer launches `cheerful` masks

• Inspired by the global scare over the novel coronavirus, a Croatian fashion designer has launched his own `cheerful` collection of virus masks.
• They offer no protection against the disease which continues to spread around the world but that has not put off buyers.
• `The idea for a designer mask was spontaneous, said Zoran Aragovic, owner of the BiteMyStyle brand.
• `Every morning while having coffee we were commenting on the coronavirus and lack of masks.


8. Netanyahu fails to secure majority in third Israeli election

• Israel appeared headed into another political stalemate on March 4, 2020 after nearly complete results indicated Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu had failed to secure a clear majority for a right-wing bloc in parliament, despite his claim of victory.
• With 99pc of votes counted, Netanyahu`s conservative Likud party was seen taking 35 of parliament`s 120 seats, down from 36 initially projected after Monday`s election. His centrist challenger, Benny Gantz, was seen holding steady at 32 seats for his Blue and White party.
• Israeli premiers generally need a coalition commanding 61 seats for their governments to survive.
• Wednesday`s tally suggested that, with like minded parties, a Netanyahu coalition could now expect to garner only 58


9. Rare Isaac Newton manuscript discovered

• A first-edition copy of Isaac Newton`s groundbreaking book laying out his three laws of motion, which became the foundation for modern physics, has been found at a library on the French island of Corsica.
• Vannina Schirinsky-Schikhmatoff, director of conservation at the Fesch public heritage library in Ajaccio, said she discovered the copy of the 17th-century work while studying an index from the library`s founder Lucien Bonaparte one of Napoleon`s brothers.
• `I found the Holy Grail in the main room, hidden in the upper shelves,` she said this week. `The cover has a little damage but inside it`s in excellent condition this is the cornerstone of modern mathematics,` she said . The Latin text, Philosophiae Naturalis Principia Mathematica (Mathematical Principles of Natural Philosophy) was first published by Newton in 1687.


10. Munro sizzles as United floor Qalandars

• Opener Colin Munro struck a belligerent knock on March 4, 2020 as Islamabad United got their Pakistan Super League campaign back on track with a resounding 71-run victory against Lahore Qalandars at the Gaddafi Stadium under lights.
• Left-handed New Zealander Munro played a sizzling innings of 87 not out, his highest score in this PSL, off just 59 balls hitting eight fours and three sixes.
• Munro`s opening partner Luke Ronchi gave his compatriot full support with a 31-ball 48 as Islamabad amassed 198-3 off the stipulated 20 overs. This is United`s highest total of this PSL season so far.
• The result besides giving United their third win of this PSL, lifted them to second spot (seven points in seven games). They have lost three games and one match ended in no result.
