Kashmir and Indian identity (By: Abrahim Shah, 3rd in CSS 2018)

The Modi-led BJP government’s decision to alter Kashmir’s status is merely the culmination of India’s drive towards fascism and the embracing of a national image highly exclusive in nature. This exclusion is not limited to the BJP’s tenure, but is in fact a product of India’s struggles with its own identity and response to colonialism. The Kashmir crisis must, therefore, be seen in a larger historical and political context which places Indian nationalism at the very heart of this crisis.

Kashmir was always the cornerstone of India’s nationalist discourse. India’s first prime minister, Jawaharlal Nehru, viewed Kashmir’s inclusion in India as validation of his secular project. Modi, in turn, imagines Kashmir as his ultimate triumph, the acme of his ambition to impose Hindutva on India. Both these movements are predicated on and have been successful because of the extreme levels of violence the Indian state unleashed against the Kashmiri people.

US vs China (By: Dr Farrukh Saleem)

The war between the US and China is getting hotter. Artificial intelligence (AI) is the new weapon of war. In the US corner are: Google, Microsoft, Amazon, Facebook, IBM and Apple. In the Chinese corner are: Baidu, Alibaba and Tencent. According to Amy Webb’s ‘The big nine: How the tech titans and their thinking machines could warp humanity’, the war is “aimed toward control and global domination” and “AI will determine who emerges the victor”.

In the simplest of terms, AI “refers to any computer grogram or system that can perform tasks that resemble acts of human intelligence.” There are three types of AI: Artificial narrow intelligence (ANI), artificial general intelligence (AGI) and artificial super intelligence (ASI). ANI is a computer programme or system that outperforms humans in some very narrowly defined task (examples: Siri, chess, smart personal assistants, voice to text features, automated responders, self-driven cars etc).

Dismantled Kashmir (By: Dr. Zeeshan Khan)

The story of Distressed Kashmiris stirred again during Imran-Trump meeting in July this year. Trump talked about the Indian Prime Minister Modi offer about asking for the mediation over Kashmir. But in August, India imposes Kashmir lockdown, puts Kashmiri leaders ‘under house arrest’.Restrictions on movement and assembly imposed, Yatra Pilgrimage and mobile internet suspended as disputed region plunges into uncertainty.

The measures came after the Indian government moved 10,000 troops to the region last week, followed by an unprecedented order asking tourists and Hindu pilgrims to leave the Himalayan valley. Residents fear New Delhi has planned to engineer demographic changes.

The latest spate of tensions began after India sent 10,000 more troops to what is already one of the most militarised regions in the world.

Causes of “Arab Spring” | Current Affairs CSS 2015 Solved Paper

Question: What are the causes of “Arab Spring”? Identify their impacts on the future politics of the region.

Introduction

At the end of 2010 and the beginning of the 2011, a series of demonstrations and protests began to rise in the Arab world. These protests have become known as the “Arab Spring”, or, as someone else called it, the “Arab awakening”. The Tunisian revolution that took place in the self-immolation of Mohamad Bouazizi on 18 December 2010 in protest of police corruption and ill treatment, has shaken authoritarian leaders across the Arab world in areas such as Egypt, Libya, Yemen, Bahrain. In this article we will try to answer the following question: why did the Arabs rebel? The Arab world was living a very difficult economic and social situation as in Europe in 1848. Poverty, rising food prices, inflation, human rights violation, and high unemployment were the main phenomena the Arabs were facing.

Role of Education in Character Building of a Nation (CSS Current Affairs 2015)

(CSS Current Affairs Paper 2015)

Question: What is the role of education in character building of a nation? Highlight major pitfalls in Pakistan’s educational systems.

Introduction

Education, if looked at beyond its conventional boundaries, forms the very essence of all our actions. What we do is what we know and have learned, either through instructions or through observation and assimilation. When we are not making an effort to learn, our mind is always processing new information or trying to analyze the similarities as well as the tiny nuances within the context which makes the topic stand out or seem different. If that is the case then the mind definitely holds the potential to learn more, however, it is us who stop ourselves from expanding the horizons of our knowledge with self-doubt or other social, emotional, or economic constraints.

CSS Current Affairs Paper Attempt Techniques (By: Saeed Wazir)

Current Affairs in CSS and PMS need innovative, critical and comprehensive approach. History and unnecessary information tend to overshadow the essence of issues primarily of contemporary nature. It calls for fresh and current events based approach rather than philosophizing past and history.

1. Strategies to ace current affairs paper

i. Understanding the questions holistically

Current affairs topics are generally open-ended; do not have a planned ending, so it may develop in several ways. They are teeming with pregnant meanings, having two dimensions i.e. intellectual and practical. Unfortunately, due to lack of clinical and multi-dimensional understanding and knowledge, mostly candidates come up with unproductive work instead of balance between different dimensions. There appears to be a marked disconnect in cognitive abilities to handle a subject matter skillfully, rendering the whole exercise patchy and unconvincing.
