1. Terrorism tops agenda as new brass takes stock

• The army on December 28, 2022 signalled a strong response to the country`s escalating terrorism problem.

• Sources told Dawn that the government had contacted Jamaat-i-Islami leader Liaquat Baloch to help restore normalcy and resolving the issues that have become a bone of contention between the government and the HDT.
• Reportedly, Maulana Rehman belongs to the JI and also holds the position of Balochistan general secretary


3. Punjab begins digital census process to meet April deadline

• The Punjab government has begun digital census process, targeting its completion by April the month Election Commission of Pakistan has scheduled local government elections in the province.
• As a pilot project the digital census has successfully been completed in 33 districts of the country.
• The Provincial Census Coordination Committee, headed by Chief Secretary Abdullah Khan Sumbal, met at civil secretariat on December 28, 2022 and instructed relevant officials to complete measures related to training of master trainers, trainers and field staff and security. Some 61,000 field staff members are being drawn from the education department


4. Two soldiers wounded in Waziristan suicide attack

• Two soldiers were wounded when a suicide bomber rammed his explosive-laden vehicle into a security check post in Mirali area of North Waziristan tribal district on Thursday.
• `It was a vehicle-borne attack. The suicide bomber rammed the explosive-laden vehicle into the wall of the check post in Mirali,` local official said. He added that two soldiers sustained injuries in the attack.
• Local police said that the area was immediately cordoned off after the incident and a search operation was launched.
• Officials stated that a check post of the security forces established on Bypass road came under attack


5. UN report uses Pakistan floods to warn of more disasters

• This summer`s floods in Pakistan were a stark reminder that the changing climate will bring more disasters in the near future, warns a UN report released on December 28, 2022.
• The United Nations` 2022 Year in Review report on Climate and Environment notes that `whilst some regions suffered from a lack of water` in the outgoing year, others were hit by catastrophic floods.
• `In Pakistan, a national emergency was declared in August, following heavy flooding and landslides caused by monsoon rains which, at the height of the crisis, saw around a third of the country underwater. Tens of millions were displaced,` the report adds

6. Balochistan seeks 1pc increase in NFC share

• In light of the volatile security situation, the Balochistan cabinet has decided to seek a one per cent increase in its share in the National Finance Commission (NFC) award on account of security expenditures amounting to at least Rs40 billion.
• A meeting of the provincial cabinet chaired by CM Abdul Qudoos Bizenjo agreed that Balochistan did not have enough money to meet its security expenses.
• CM Bizenjo said Balochistan shared borders with Iran and Afghanistan and added that the province was a victim of `external terrorism`.
• He said the province was on the `frontline` in Pakistan`s fight against terrorism. Out of its meagre resources, Balochistan allocates Rs40bn-50bn for security expenditures, the CM said

• Bangladesh`s sprawling capital inaugurated its first ever metro rail line on December 28, 2022 as authorities work to ease congestion that has throttled growth and inflamed tempers in the gridlocked metropolis.

• It was also the first meeting between Turkish and Syrian defence ministers since the start of the war in 2011.
• Russia and Turkiye are involved in Syria, with Moscow supporting the Damascus regime against its opponents, and Ankara backing rebels


9. Russia steps up mortar artillery attacks on Kherson, eastern Ukraine

• Russian forces stepped up mortar and artillery attacks on the recently liberated city of Kherson in southern Ukraine on December 28, 2022, Ukraine`s military said, while also exerting constant pressure along front lines in eastern regions of the country.
• Russia fired 33 missiles from multiple rocket launchers at civilian targets in Kherson in the 24 hours to early Wednesday, Ukraine`s military said in its morning report.
• Russia denies targeting civilians.
• Heavy fighting also persisted around the Ukrainian-held city of Bakhmut, now largely in ruins, in the eastern province of Donetsk, and to its north, around the cities of Svatove and Kreminna in Luhansk province, where Ukrainian forces are trying to break Russian defensive lines


10. Four men killed in India-held Jammu during `encounter`

• Four heavily-armed unidentified men, travelling in a truck to India held Kashmir after allegedly crossing into India, were killed in an ongoing operation by security forces in Jammu`s Sidhra area early on December 28, 2022, a police officer said, terming it a `major success` ahead of Republic Day, reports said.
• `Four terrorists have been killed in the encounter in Sidhra area in Jammu. Seven AK-47 rifles, one M4 rifle, three pistols along with other ammunition were recovered,` India Today quoted additional director general of police (ADGP) of Jammu, Mukesh Singh, as saying.
• The truck was set on fire during an encounter between gunmen and security forces in the Sidhra area in Jammu on Wednesday. Smoke was seen blowing from the truck, loaded with husk
