1. Pakistan, Qatar sign 10-year LNG supply contract
• Pakistan and Qatar have signed another long-term Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) supply contract for additional 200 million cubic feet a day (MMCFD) at around 31percentlowerrate thanthe2015 contractfor500MMCFD.
• The 10-year agreement signed on Friday entailed the `lowest-ever publicly disclosed price under a long-term contract in the world` and was achieved through joint efforts of the political and military leaderships, said Special Assistant to the Prime Minister on Petroleum Nadeem Babar while speaking at a news conference after the signing ceremony
2. PM lays foundation stone of business district in Lahore
• Prime Minister Imran Khan on February 26, 2021 laid the foundation stone of the ambitious Central Business District (CBD) project at the Walton Airport site, asserting that the project would help create much-needed wealth to pay off foreign loans that had accumulated over the past `decade of darkness`.
• `It is an `out-of-the-box` initiative to create wealth, overcome fiscal as well as current account deficit and sustain the country`s economy,` Mr Khan said while speaking at the foundation stone-laying ceremony. `It is high time to increase the country`s income and decrease expenditures to come out of the quagmire of fiscal and current account deficit,` he said
3. UN, US ask India and Pakistan to stay engaged
• The UN Secretary General and the United States have both welcomed an understanding between India and Pakistan for reducing tensions, hoping that this would lead to further talks between the two neighbours.
• Pakistan and India announced that they had recommitted themselves to the 2003 ceasefire arrangement at the Line of Control (LoC) and agreed to address the `core issues` that could undermine peace and stability.
4. TTP commander killed in S. Waziristan operation
• Security forces on February 26, 2021 killed a commander of the Tehreek-i-Taliban Pakistan (T TP) in South Waziristan.
• The security forces conducted an intelligence based operation on a terrorist hideout after confirmation of terrorists` presence in the Sharmangi area of Tiarza in South Waziristan, said a statement issued by the Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR)
5. Myanmar`s UN ambassador appeals for `action against military`
• Myanmar`s UN Ambassador Kyaw Moe Tun, speaking for the country`s elected civilian government ousted in a military coup on Feb 1, appealed to the United Nations on February 26, 2021 `to use any means necessary to take action against the Myanmar military` to restore democracy to the Southeast Asian country.
• He addressed the 193-member UN General Assembly after Secretary General Antonio Guterres` special envoy on Myanmar, Christine Schraner Burgener, warned that no country should recognise or legitimise the Myanmar junta and all efforts must be made to restore democracy.
6. Lanka reverses cremation order for Muslims
• Sri Lanka on February 26, 2021 ended forced cremations of people who have died of coronavirus, after visiting Pakistani Prime Minister Imran Khan urged Colombo to respect the funeral rites of the island`s minority Muslims.
• The government first banned burials in April over concerns which experts said were baseless by influential Buddhist monks that the practice could contaminate groundwater and spread the virus
7. India, China to set up hotline as border crisis eases
• India and China have agreed to set up a hotline between their foreign ministers as the two nuclear-armed neighbours look to reduce tensions along a disputed Himalayan border where their troops have been locked in confrontation since last summer.
• The decision was reached at a lengthy call between the two foreign ministers on Thursday, India`s foreign ministry said in a statement on Friday, adding that New Delhi was pushing for an quick resolution to the border crisis
8. US strikes Iran-backed militias in Syria in Biden first
• The US military has struck Iran-backed militias in eastern Syria, killing at least 22 fighters according to a war monitor, in what the Pentagon said was a message from the new administration after recent rocket attacks targeting US troops in Iraq.
• In its first military action against Iran-linked groups since Joe Biden became president five weeks ago, the Pentagon said it had carried out air strikes at a Syria-Iraq border control point used by Iran-backed groups, destroying `multiple facilities`
9. Rizwan, Sohaib steer Sultans to first win
• Mohammad Rizwan and Sohaib Maqsood steered Multan Sultans to a first win in the Pakistan Super League (PSL) 2021 after routing Lahore Qalandars by 7 wickets in the 7th match played at the National Stadium.
• Sultans surmounted the 158-run target with 22 balls spare as Rizwan, who posted his second half-century and became the leading run-getter of the season, scored a breezy 49-ball 76, studded by 12 fours, and Sohaib hammered 7 fours and two 2 sixes in his 61 not out off 41. The pair stitched a match-winning 110-run partnership for the third wicket. Shaheen Shah Afridi struck in the first over as he clean bowled Chris Lynn with a scorching yorker in the first over. 10. Peshawar go on sixes spree, inflict third defeat on Quetta
• Peshawar Zalmi went on a sixes galore to pull off a stunning run chase that condemned Quetta Gladiators to a third straight defeat in the HBL Pakistan Super League 6 clash at the National Stadium.
• Peshawar, who were seemingly behind a challenging rate till the 48th over, burst into contention thanks to cameos from Sherfane Rutherford and captain Wahab Riaz, who blasted 48 in only 20 balls, to chalk up their second victory in three games.
