1. Pre-emptive action on the table as militants fire salvo

• In light of an uptick in the number of militant attacks across the country, the government buoyed by international support has decided to adopt `pre-emptive` measures alongside a conciliatory approach to eliminate terrorism.
• This was announced by Interior Minister Rana Sanaullah during a press conference in Islamabad, hours after the out-lawed Tehreek-i-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) announced a campaign against two of the main political parties currently in government the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz and Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP).
• Separately, in a message of support following the threat, the US State Department indicated that President Joe Biden has made a commitment to take unilateral action as it did in the case of Ayman al-Zawahiri against threats from Afghanistan that `potentially presented a threat to the US, to our allies and friends` In Islamabad, the interior minister said the government would take preventive actions to foil terror plots and apprehend all those associated with militancy to stop terrorism


2. Stop lending support to terrorism, FO tells India

• The Foreign Office on Wednesday asked India to stop levelling bogus charges and end its support for terrorism in Pakistan.
• `For last several years, India has engaged in a malicious campaign to mislead the international community through a fictitious narrative of victimhood and vile anti-Pakistan propaganda.
• This practice must stop, Foreign Office Spokesperson Mumtaz Zahra Baloch said in a statement.
• She was responding to a new tirade unleashed against Pakistan by Indian External Affairs Minister S.
• Jaishankar during his visit to Vienna


3. Asia-Pacific is world`s most disaster-prone region, says UN

• The year 2022 was yet another reminder that Asia Pacific is the world`s most disaster prone region, and the floods were the deadliest, accounting for 74.4 per cent of disaster events in the region and 88.4 per cent of total deaths globally, a United Nations report said on January 4, 2023.
• The United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (UN-ESCAP) says the year 2022 also witnessed cascading disasters where a chain of hazard events took place followed by the initial and residual impacts. Pakistan witnessed melting glaciers from the record spring heat and this combined with an unprecedented monsoon rain resulted in a historic flooding that devastated a large part of the country


4. Dasu Dam to produce power by end of 2026

• Water and Power Development Authority chairman retired Lt-Gen Sajjad Ghani on January 4, 2023 said the 4,320 megawatts Dasu hydropower project would begin producing electricity by the end of 2026 as the work on it was in full swing and would be completed on time.
• He was speaking to a group of the elders of Upper and Lower Kohistanand Kolai-Palas districts at the project site.
• The Wapda chairman said the mega energy project being executed in Upper Kohistan would help address electricity shortfall in the country


5. Ecnec clears 10 projects worth Rs472bn

• The Executive Committee of the National Economic Council (Ecnec) on January 4, 2023 approved 10 development projects, mostly related to the rehabilitation and reconstruction of flood-hit areas and pre-poll public support, with an estimated cost of about Rs472 billion.
• This also includes a Rs160bn foreign-funded project for the construction of more than 565,000 fully or partially damaged houses in Sindh with a World Bank loan of $500 million.
• The meeting of the Ecnec presided over by Finance Minister Ishaq Dar also approved a major pre-poll initiative National Development Internship Programme to induct about 20,000 youth as interns in the development projects at a total cost of about Rs9bn. The financial impact would be met through contingency allocations in all development projects

6. China stats `under-represent` true impact of Covid outbreak, says WHO

• The World Health Organisation criticised on January 4, 2023 China`s `very narrow` definition of Covid deaths, warning that official statistics were not showing the true impact of the outbreak.
• `We still do not have complete data,` the WHO`s emergencies director Michael Ryan told reporters.
• `We believe that the current numbers being published from China under-represent the true impact of the disease in terms of hospital admissions, in terms of ICU admissions, and particularly in terms of deaths.` His comments came amid growing concern over China`s steep rise in Covid infections since Beijing last month abruptly lifted years of hardline restrictions, with hospitals and crematoriums quickly overwhelmed


7. Car bombs kill 35, burn houses in Somalia

• Two car bombs detonated by Al Shabaab militants in central Somalia on January 4, 2023 killed at least 35 people, including eight members of a single family, and wounded 40 more, a senior police officer said.
• The attack in the town of Mahas was the latest in a series by Al Qaeda affiliate Al Shabaab since government forces and allied clan militias last year began pushing the insurgents out of territory they had long held.
• `Most of the dead are civilians.
• They are women and children, Hassan-Kafi Mohamed Ibrahim, deputy police commissioner of Hirshabelle State, said


8. US carries out first execution of transgender person

• A transgender woman convicted of murder was put to death late on Tuesday in the first such execution in the United States, officials said.
• Amber McLaughlin, 49, was pronounced dead shortly before 7 pm local time at the Diagnostic and Correctional Center in the town of Bonne Terre, Missouri, according to a statement from the state prison department.
• Local news station Fox2now reported that McLaughlin die d by lethal injection.
• McLaughlin was the first transgender person of either sex to be executed in the country, and also the first person to die by capital punishment this year in America


9. Christian graves vandalised in Jerusalem

• A Jerusalem bishop said on January 4, 2023 he was `dismayed` by the desecration of dozens of Christian graves on the edge of the Old City, as police probed the vandalism.
• Stone graves lay in pieces with crosses toppled at the Protestant cemetery on Mount Zion, where Christians believe Jesus`s Last Supper took place.
• `We discovered that more than 30 tombstones and crosses were smashed to pieces,` Hosam Naoum, an Anglican bishop, told journalists at the cemetery


10. Last surviving Apollo 7 astronaut dies at 90

• Former astronaut Walter Cunningham, who flew to space aboard Apollo 7 in 1968, part of the first crewed Apollo mission paving the way for 12 others to land on the moon in subsequent years, died on Tuesday at age 90, Nasa said.
• Cunningham joined crewmates Walter Schirra and Donn Eisele for the successful 11-day mission, which was conducted in low-Earth orbit as the first human test flight of the new Apollo spacecraft that would later venture to the moon.
• Apollo 7 marked the resumption of Nasa`s lunar space flight programme 21 months after the fire that killed all three members of the Apollo 1 crew during a ground-based launch rehearsal in late January 1967
