1. `Militants` killed, five cops injured in KP terror spate
• A day after Pakistan vowed to take pre-emptive measures to avert terrorist attacks, security forces killed 11 militants, including a key commander of the banned Tehreek-i-Taliban Pakistan, in a raid in South Waziristan, while two separate attacks targeting police in Lakki Marwat and Dera Ismail Khan left five officials injured.
• In an intelligence-based operation in Wana, the security forces raided a hide-out of TTP militants and killed at least 11terrorists,including TTP commander Hafizullah alongside two would-be suicide bombers, said the military`s media wing. The operation `foiled a major terrorist activity`, the Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR) said in a statement issued on Thursday evening.
• `During intense exchange of fire, 11 terrorists, including terrorist commander Hafizullah alias Tor Hafiz, and two suicide bombers were killed
2. Pakistan, Afghanistan and Uzbekistan discuss trans-Afghan railway project
• Pakistan, Afghanistan and Uzbekistan discussed the initiation of a feasibility study for the trans-Afghan railway project during a trilateral working group meeting in Islamabad on Thursday. The proposed project is aimed to connect Pakistan with the Central Asian Republics by connecting the existing railway link at Mazar-i-Sharif with Pakistan Railways network.
• The trilateral meeting reviewed the progress made on the initial technical assessments and next steps for early initiation of the feasibility of the project, ac-cording to the railways ministry.
• The Trans-Afghan Railway project would not only facilitate the regional and bilateral trade between the participating countries, but would also provide better people-to-people connections to the end re region, the ministry said
3. Shehbaz, Li discuss CPEC, investor safety
• Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif on January 5, 2023 assured his Chinese counterpart Li Keqiang of timely completion of China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC) project and safe environment for investors.
• `Pakistan would provide a completely secure and conducive business environment for Chinese investors, Mr Shehbaz said during a long telephonic conversation with Mr Li.
• Separately, PM Shehbaz issued directives for the implementation of solarisation project, expressed optimism for achieving the IT export target of $15 billion in three years and reviewed ties with UK, according to a statement issued by the Prime Minister`s Office.
• In his conversation with the Chinese prime minister, Mr Sharif emphasised Pakistan`s unswerving focus on timely progress of the CPEC project
4. FO denies plans to strike TTP hideouts in Afghanistan
• The Foreign Office on January 5, 2023 reiterated its commitment to respect Afghanistan`s sovereignty as it dismissed reports about plans of conducting cross-border strikes on the Tehreek-i-Taliban Pakistan`s hideouts in the neighbouring war ravaged country.
• `Pakistan is a responsible member of the United Nations, and as a responsible member of the United Nations it subscribes to and will always uphold the purposes and principles of the UN Charter, which include territorial integrity and political independence of states,` Foreign Office spokesperson Mumtaz Zahra Baloch said at the weekly media briefing while responding to questions about the possibility of strikes against T TP hideouts in Afghanistan.
• The speculation that Pakistan was planning to hit TTP sanctuaries across the border started after Interior Minister Rana Sanaullah in a TV interview threatened unilateral action against the terrorist group`s havens if Taliban authorities fail to act against it. The interior minister had then said that `the international laws give you the right to target those who attack you`
5. Govt set to launch Rs30bn internship, laptop schemes
• As the election year has started, the federal government is set to launch three major initiatives with an estimated cost of about Rs30 billion to win over more than 150,000 families through two internship programmes and a laptop scheme.
• Under the initiatives, about 50,000 engineers and educated youth would be provided internships in the public and private sectors for up to one year. This included 20,000 to 30,000 internships in the public sector development projects with an estimated cost of Rs9.6bn and 30,000 interns in the private industrial sector at the cost of Rs9bn both through the Public Sector Development Programme (PSDP).
• In addition, about 100,000youth would be provided free laptops at the cost of Rs10bn.These projects are in addition to the Rs87bn already approved by the government for development schemes in the constituencies of 174 MNAs supporting the prime minister

6. Senate body passes bill to curb illegal immigration
• The Senate Overseas Pakistanis and Human Resource Development Committee on January 5, 2023 unanimously passed a bill suggesting an increase in the punishment for individuals involved in sending Pakistani citizens abroad through illegal means and defrauding expatriates.
• Senator Manzoor Ahmed Kakar presided over the meeting in which a bill titled `The Emigration (Amendment) Bill, 2022` was tabled, said a statement. The objective of the bill was to address the grievances of overseas Pakistanis. According to the bill, the punishment of the people involved in fraud with people will be increased from seven years to 14 years.
• The committee members also asked for the details of the Pakistanis imprisoned abroad.
• They said that overseas workers send remittances to Pakistan and legislation needed to be done for their protection
7. Punjab launching new land record system
• The Punjab government is starting a new land record system, but the revenue record of 460 mouzas (villages) in the district of Rawalpindi is still incomplete.
• Upon this, the Board of Revenue (BoR) has written a letter to the deputy commissioner to complete the scanning of `Massavi` (details of land ownership) by January 9, as a team will visit the district headquarters to check it.
• According to the letter, the BoR director said Punjab Urban Land System Enhancement project was being conceived for implementation by the board with the assistance of the World Bank (WB) wherein each and every Khasra will be mapped digitally to replace the traditional manual land maintenance method

8. Afghan Taliban claim killing of Pakistan embassy attackers
• Afghan Taliban spokesperson Zabihullah Mujahid said on January 5, 2023 the Islamic State (IS) militants involved in the attack on Pakistan`s embassy in Kabul have been killed in an operation, Dawn.com reported.
• Afghan security forces carried out operations in Kabul against a `dangerous network` of the militant Islamic State group who were involved in attacks on the Pakistan embassy and on a hotel where Chinese nationals were staying, Mr Mujahid said in a statement.
• The Afghan government spokesperson confirmed that the militants killed in the operation were also involved in a bomb attack near a military airfield in Kabul and several other areas, according to Dawn.com.
• Mr Mujahid claimed the killed terrorists had planned more attacks on key targets
9. Putin orders ceasefire for Orthodox Christmas
• Russian President Vladimir Putin on January 5, 2023 ordered a 36-hour ceasefire in Ukraine to run during Orthodox Christmas, a move that war battered Kyiv swiftly branded as `hypocrisy` Putin`s directive to his troops was announced days after Moscow suffered its deadliest reported loss of the invasion, and following 11 months of brutal combat.
• Both nations celebrate Orthodox Christmas and the Russian leader`s order came after a ceasefire was urged by Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan and Russia`s spiritual leader Patriarch Kirill, a staunch Putin supporter.
• `Taking into account the appeal of His Holiness Patriarch Kirill, I instruct the defence minister of the Russian Federation to introduce… a ceasefire along the entire line of contact between the sides in Ukraine,` said a Kremlin statement
10. Iran closes French institute to protest Khamenei cartoons
• Iran on January 5, 2023 announced the closure of a Tehran-based French research institute in protest against cartoons of the Islamic republic`s supreme leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, published by French satirical weekly Charlie Hebdo.
• The magazine printed the caricatures in support of months of protests in Iran as part of a special edition to mark the anniversary of the deadly 2015 attack on its Paris office which left 12 people dead, including some of its best known cartoonists.
• `The ministry is ending the activities of the French Institute for Research in Iran as a first step,` the Iranian foreign ministry said in a statement, a day after Tehran had warned Paris of consequences.
