1. Govt makes Quran teaching compulsory in universities

• The Punjab government has made teaching of the Holy Quran with translation mandatory for all the university students.
• According to a Punjab Governor Secretariat notification, a student would not be awarded degree if he or she does not study the Holy Quran with translation.
• `Lecturers in all the universities of Punjab will teach the Holy Quran with translation to all students,` says the notification. The Holy Book will be taught separately from the subject of Islamiat, which is already being taught in all the universities.

2. Uranium exploration in Bannu, Kohat approved

• The government has approved work for exploration of uranium in Bannu basin and Kohat plateau at an estimated cost of Rs926.03 million and allocated Rs200m for Atomic Energy Commission`s project in the budget for fiscal year 2020-21.
• The country is investing heavily for the development of nuclear medicines and radiation-related hospitals and equipment including the cancer fighting centres.
• Currently, there are 18 ongoing development projects of the commission and Rs23.09bn has been allocated for these projects in the new budget. None of the projects have any foreign funding, either in the shape of grants or loans.

3. Murad to present Sindh budget for 2020-21 on 17th

• Sindh Chief Minister Syed Murad Ali Shah on June 14, 2020 announced that he would present the annual budget for the next financial year on June 17.
• He was speaking at the parliamentary party meeting of the Pakistan Peoples Party held here at CM House.
• The meeting was attended by all provincial ministers, majority of party MPAs, former provincial mini-ter Manzoor Wassan and Law Adviser Mustaza Wahab.

4. Health secretary retires

• Health Secretary Dr Allah Bakhsh Malik has retired after reaching the age of superannuation.
• Dr Malik’s service to the country spanned over 35 years. UNESCO conferred prestigious Confucius Award on him in recognition of his leadership role for the promotion of education and skill development for less-affluent and disenfranchised sections of society in 2011.
• The Chinese government awarded him a ‘Certificate of Merit’ in recognition of his services for promotion of affordable quality education for the marginalised sections of the society.

5. Sri Lanka holds mock election to test virus measures

• Sri Lanka staged a mock election on June 14, 2020 to test measures aimed at preventing the spread of the coronavirus during a parliamentary vote in August.
• The poll was due to be held on April 25 but was put off and then postponed indefinitely due to the epidemic, which official figures show has infected nearly 2,000 people and 1 killed 11.
• The election commission said the vote would be held on August 5.
• The island nation of 21 million people has steadily lifted its lockdown restrictions, although a night curfew remains.

6. Fears rise of new virus wave as China reports many cases

• China reported its highest daily number of new coronavirus cases in months on June 14, 2020, triggering fears of a second wave of infections as more European countries prepare to reopen their borders.
• The shock resurgence in domestic infections has rattled China where the disease emerged late last year but had largely been tamed through severe restrictions on movement that were later emulated across the globe.
• It also gives a bleak insight into the difficulties the world will face in conquering Covid-19, as many hard-hit European countries have seen an encouraging drop in contagion and prepare to welcome visitors from elsewhere on the continent.

7. Over 400 Afghan security men killed or wounded by Taliban in past week

• The Taliban have killed or wounded more than 400 Afghan security personnel over the past week, the interior ministry said on Sunday, accusing the insurgents of increasing attacks ahead of expected peace talks.
• Violence had dropped across much of Afghanistan since the Taliban announced a three-day ceasefire on May 24 to mark the Eidul Fitr holiday, but officials have accuse d the insurgent s of stepping up attacks in recent days.
• `In the past one week, the Taliban carried out 222 attacks against the Afghan security forces, resulting in the death and injury of 422` personnel, interior ministry spokesman Tareg Arian said at a press conference

8. Statue of famous Italian journalist defaced in Milan

• A statue in Milan of a famous Italian journalist has been sprayedred and tagged with the words `racist, rapist`, becoming the country`s first statue targeted since a wave of similar incidents across Europe and the United States.
• The statue of Indro Montanelli, which stands in a garden of the same name in the northern Italian city, was cleaned on Sunday morning after being vandalised during the previous night. Montanelli, who died in 2001 at the age of 92, was one of the most decorated and influential Italian journalists of the 20th century, founding the Il Giornale newspaper and serving at the Corriere della Sera.

9. Berliners form socially-distanced human chain against racism

• Thousands demonstrated in Berlin against racism and for broader fairness, including sharing the coronavirus burden, as they stretched a human chain through the German capital on June 14, 2020 while keeping safe distances.
• Hundreds also turned out in other cities like Leipzig and Hamburg, although some faced rainstorms in the tail-end of a weekend of harsh weather across Germany.
• A spokesman for progressive movement Unteilbar (Indivisible) said `more than 20,000 people` had participated in the event in Berlin, while police estimated around 8,000.

10. Bollywood actor Sushant `commits suicide`

• A young Bollywood heartthrob lauded for his portrayal of cricket star M.S. Dhoni on the silver screen has died, Mumbai police said on June 14, 2020.
• `Police found Sushant Singh Rajput`s body at his residence on Sunday afternoon,` Mumbai police spokesman Franaya Ashok said, confirming that the 34-year-old had taken his own life.
• Rajput, renowned for his numerous hits on the big and small screens, reportedly battled depression
