1. Pakistan, US review Afghan peace process
• Reviewing the progress in the Afghan reconciliation process, Pakistan and the United States on June 7, 2020 agreed to continue working towards `mutually agreed goals` defined in the landmark peace deal between the US and Taliban in Doha in February.
• The resolve to continue working together for bringing peace to the war-torn neighbouring country was made by US Special Representative for Afghan Reconciliation Dr Zalmay Khalilzad and Chief of the Army Staff General Qamar Javed Bajwa during a meeting, according to the Inter-Services Public Relations.
• `The matters of mutual interest, overall regional security situation, including Afghan refugees issue, Afghan reconciliation process and Pak-Afghan border management were discussed during the meeting between Gen Bajwa and Dr Khalilzad
2. Govt allows limitless wheat import by private sector
• The federal government on June 7, 2020 decided to allow wheat import by the private sector without any restriction of limit and abolished 60 per cent regulatory duty on the import of wheat the major staple food crop in Pakistan.
• A meeting chaired by Prime Minister Imran Khan also decided to abolish six per cent and two per cent additional duties currently applicable to wheat import. The waiver will also be applicable to the import of 0.5 million tonnes of wheat, already allowed by the Economic Coordination Committee of the federal cabinet in March.
• The meeting was called to discuss the measures to cope with the country`s needs of wheat and control flour price and also decide d to lift ban on inter-provincial transportation of wheat to ensure its sufficient availability across the country
3. CDA restricts entry without facemasks in offices
• The Capital Development Authority (CDA) has restricted entry of people without masks in its main secretariat.
• The latest restriction is valid both for CDA employees as well as visitors. Steamers and banners have been displayed at all entry gates in this regard. Security personnel have also been directed not to allow entry to any person without mask.
• The CDA Administration has directed the Security Directorate to ensure no entry without mask. The CDA administration has further directed to make sure that preventive measures against Covid-19 are observed during working at CDA Headquarters.
4. Hakim Abdul Basit dies
• Renowned Unani health practitioner Hakim Syed Abdul Basit breathed his last at home on June 6, 2020. He was over 60.
• Hakim Abdul Basit is survived by one son, two daughters and a wife.
• The cause of death could not be ascertained as a family source said he died suddenly, leaving them in a shock.
• Hailing from the family of herbal experts belonging to Hyderabad Deccan in India, Hakim Abdul Basit came to the limelight when he started hosting a TV show on `Tibb-i-Nabvi
5. China suspends debt repayment for 77 developing nations, regions
• China had announced the suspension of debt repayment for 77 developing countries and regions as the nation was working with other G20 members to carry out the G20 debt relief initiative for low-income countries, Chinese officials said at a press briefing at the State Council Information Office on June 7, 2020.
• China announced in May that it would provide $2 billion over two years to help other countries respond to the impact of the coronavirus pandemic, according to Global Times. Ma Zhaoxu, Vice Minister of Foreign Affairs, said the fund would not only include medical supplies, but also support other countries restart their economies and development. Ma made the comment at the press briefing to release the white paper titled “Fighting COVID-19 China in Action.” The fund included both bilateral aid and multilateral donations, according to Ma. China was negotiating bilateral aid with recipient countries in need in an equal manner to identify assisting projects to help developing nations improve public health standards, improve their livelihoods and resume their economies, Ma said
6. Britain to reopen places of worship on June 15
• The UK government said June 7, 2020 it will reopen places of worship “for private individual prayer” on June 15 as it continues to progressively ease coronavirus restrictions.
• Prime Minister Boris Johnson’s office said services and worship groups will still be banned for the time being due to concern that the virus spreads more quickly in enclosed spaces. “People of all faiths have shown enormous patience and forbearance, unable to mark Easter, Passover, Ramazan or Vaisakhi with friends and family in the traditional way,” Communities Secretary Robert Jenrick said in a statement.
• “We are now able to move forwards with a limited but important return to houses of worship.” Britain’s official COVID-19 death toll of 40,465 is second only to that of the United States.
7. China, India to seek peaceful resolution of border impasse
• Indian and Chinese military commanders have agreed to peacefully resolve the current border issue in eastern Ladakh in accordance with bilateral agreements reached between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and President Xi Jinping in recent years, an Indian statement said on June 7, 2020.
• India`s ministry of external affairs recalled that in recent weeks, India and China had maintained communications through established diplomatic and military channels to address the situation in areas along the border.
• `A meeting was held between the (Indian) corps commander based in Leh and the Chinese commander on June 6 in the Chushul-Moldo region, the statement said
8. Israel makes high-spec masks against virus resurgence
• Israel said on June 7, 2020 it had opened a factory to make millions of high-spec masks as it prepares for a possible `second wave` of coronavirus cases.
• After imposing tough measures to tackle the Covid19 illness, Israel has fared relatively well in the initial months of the pandemic.
• More than 17,700 infections have been registered among a population of nine million, with nearly 300 deaths.
• But as the country has gradually opened up in recent weeks, new outbreaks have occurred and the government has warned Israelis not to become complacent
9. First US man to win world gymnastics title dies
• Kurt Thomas, the first US male gymnast to win a world championship gold medal, has died. He was 64.
• Thomas family said he died on June 5, 2020. He had a stroke May 24, caused by a tear of the basilar artery in the brain stem.
• `Yesterday [Friday], I lost my universe, my best friend and my soulmate of 24 years. Kurt lived his life to the extreme, and I will be forever honored to be his wife,` his wife Beckie Thomas told International Gymnast Magazine
10. Nunes defeats Spencer to defend featherweight crown
• UFC featherweight champion Amanda Nunes dominated Felicia Spencer and scored a comprehensive decision victory in retaining her crown, becoming the first two-weight UFC champ to successfully defend both belts.
• The Canadian challenger went the distance at the UFC 250 event at the UFC Apex in Las Vegas on June 7, 2020, but she was completely outclassed, as Nunes won every one of the five rounds on the judges’ scorecards. “I studied her very well, I know she’s tough and I have to be sharp if I have to go five rounds, I have to be dominating,” a beaming Nunes told commentator Joe Rogan after the fight. “That was my goal, defending my two belts at the same time. I defended both belts, you know, I’m the greatest! I’m so happy right now!” she added
