1. Shehbaz announces Rs10bn for KP as crises swirl

• Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif on August 31, 2022 visited flood-hit areas in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and announced Rs10 billion in funds to rehabilitate the calamity-hit areas, even as a report by the World Health Organisation (WHO) painted a grim picture of the health and humanitarian crises simmering across the country.
• During his visit to Kalam and other parts of Swat, the premier met the flood survivors and addressed a gathering in Kalam and Kanju wherein he promised all-out help by the federal government in overcoming the crisis.
• About the Rs10bn pack-age, PM Sharif said the federal government, the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA), and the provincial administration would ensure transparency and immediate disbursement of money in the affected areas


2. State Bank receives $1.16bn from IMF

• The State Bank of Pakistan on August 31, 2022 received $1.16 billion deposit from the International Monetary Fund (IMF), two days after the much-needed nod of the Fund to immediate disbursement on successful completion of the combined seventh and eighth reviews of a loan facility.
• In a late-night tweet, the SBP confirmed the development and expressed the confidence that it would help improve foreign exchange reserves.
• `Today, #SBP has received proceeds of USD 1.16 billion (equivalent of SDR 894 million) after the IMF Executive Board completed the combined seventh and Eight review under the Extended Fund Facility (EFF) for Pakistan.


3. `Pakistan doesn`t have to choose between US and China`

• The United States doesn`t ask Pakistan to choose between it and China, but rather wants countries `to be able to have a choice`.
• However, Washington is worried that nations entering into relationships with China `are not going to end up well`, said Derek Chollet, a senior adviser to the US Secretary of State.
• In an interview with Dawn, Counselor Chollet said Washing-ton was not `afraid of competing with China, but would like to have a fair competition`.
• He stressed that the US had honest differences with both India and Pakistan, but wanted to maintain and diversify its strong relationship with Islamabad


4. 32 Balochistan districts declared `calamity-hit`

• The Balochistan government on August 31, 2022 declared 32 out of the total 34 provincial districts `calamity-hit` as Climate Change Minister Sherry Rehman hinted that at least $10 billion would be required to rebuild climate resilient infrastructure to mitigate the impacts of global warming.
• Since monstrous rains that started in June, at least 254 people have been killed in Balochistan and 1.3 million people have been forced to locate, the Balochistan chief minister`s adviser Mir Ziaullah Langove said in a press conference alongside Chief Secretary Abdul Aziz and Provincial Disaster Management Authority (PDMA) Director General Naseer Ahmed Nasar


5. ADB approves $3m to support relief efforts

• The Asian Development Bank on August 31, 2 022 approved a grant of $3 million to support the relief and rehabilitation measures in the light of devastating floods in Pakistan as more international aid in the form of food and equipment, particularly from Turkiye and China, and the United Arab Emirates, arrived in the flood hit country.
• According to the state-run APP, as many as 16 consignments of relief goods and equipment were delivered. Turkiye sent aircraft laden with 600 family tents, 1,008 food boxes, 1,000 hygiene boxes, 395kg of baby food, 2,000 blankets, 432 cooking kits, 1,440 pillows, 1,296 mattresses, and 426,093 medical kits.
• The UAE in five C-130 planes delivered 90,450 pounds of food items, including rice and lentils. It also sent tents and hygiene kits whereas China sent four Y-20 aircraft carrying 3,000 tents for the flood-hit people

6. ICC calls for resumption of Afghan war crimes probe

• A year into the Taliban`s rule, war crimes prosecutors in The Hague have urged judges to rule promptly on their request to resume investigations into atrocities in Afghanistan and warn that crimes are continuing, court documents showed.
• The International Criminal Court`s Afghanistan investigation has been on hold for more than two years. In March 2020 the previous Afghan government had asked it to be suspended while they investigated suspected war crimes themselves.
• In documents released on ICC`s website this week and dated Aug 26, prosecutor Karim Khan argued Afghanistan`s request to suspend the probe should be rejected, citing a lack of effort by authorities there to pursue justice in domestic courts


7. Russian firm halts gas flow in new jitters for Europe

• Russian energy giant Gazprom suspended gas deliveries to Germany on a major pipeline on August 31, 2022, the latest in a series of supply halts that have fuelled an energy crisis in Europe.
• Gazprom said supplies via Nord Stream 1 were `completely stopped` for `preventative work` at a compressor unit, shortly after European gas network operator ENTSOG announced that deliveries had ceased.
• Gazprom has also said it would suspend gas supplies to France`s main provider Engie from Thursday after it f ailed to pay for all deliveries made in July


8. G20 climate talks end without communique

• Group of 20 climate talks in Bali ended without a joint communique on August 31, 2022 despite host Indonesia warning the world`s leading economies they must act together to combat a warming planet or risk plunging into `uncharted territory`.
• The one-day meeting on the resort island concluded with Indonesia`s environment chief saying G20 chair Jakarta would only issue a summary of the forum`s aims, reflecting divisions between its members over how to tackle climate change.
• The failure to agree upon a unified statement came at the end of a month in which more than 1,000 people died in Pakistan from flooding blamed on climate change and after a drought exacerbated by a record heatwave spread across half of China


9. Aleppo airport hit by Israeli strikes: Syria

• Several Israeli strikes hit Aleppo airport in northern Syria on August 31, 2022, the official SANA news agency said, also reporting material damage.
• `At around 2000 hours (1700 GMT), the Israeli enemy targeted Aleppo international airport with missile fire, causing some material damage at the heart of the facility,` the agency said. It made no mention of casualties. SANA had earlier reported `the sound of explosions` in the area.
• The Britain-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, which relies on a wide network of sources on the ground for its information, confirmed there had been an attack. It said four Israeli missiles had targeted the runway and depots at the airport believed to contain missiles supplied by Iran


10. Sri Lanka strikes initial loan pact with IMF

• Crisis-hit Sri Lanka has reached a preliminary agreement with the International Monetary Fund (IMF) for a bailout, four sources with direct knowledge of the plan have said.
• The debt-laden country has been seeking up to $3 billion from the global lender in a bid to escape its worst economic crisis since independence from Britain in 1948.
• Sri Lankans have faced acute shortages of fuel and other basic goods for months, leaving it in political turmoil and inflation which is now soaring at almost 65pc
