1. Govt, IMF finalise `prior actions`, no word yet on key accord

• The government said on February 09, 2023 it had agreed on a set of prior actions with the International Monetary Fund (IMF) to complete the ninth review of the troubled $7bn Extended Fund Facility (EFF), but a staff-level agreement (SLA) on the Memorandum of Economic and Financial Policies (MEFP) remained elusive at the conclusion of the 10-day talks.
• `All issues have been settled and prior actions agreed upon, said Finance Secretary Hamed Yaqoob Shaikh. He said the SLA would be finalised in the days to come, as the visiting mission had agreed to certain points that were beyond the mandate it came to Pakistan with.
• However, he declined to say how many and what prior actions had been agreed upon, saying all these details would follow, probably on Friday.
• The mission is now heading back and will explain these matters to the Fund`s management, which could take two to three days


2. Pakistan skipped Moscow moot to protest Indian participation, says FO

• Pakistan skipped a regional security meeting on Afghanistan, which had been hosted by Russia, because of its continued objections over Indian participation and concerns that its agenda was much wider than just Afghanistan.
• At a weekly media briefing, Foreign Office spokesperson Mumtaz Zahra Baloch said Pakistan could contribute more at forums that `contribute constructively` to peace in Afghanistan.
• `We will continue to participate in all these mechanisms to their full potential and will continue to engage with our partners to contribute to peace and stability in Afghanistan,` she maintained


3. Cabinet approves rules for corporate farming under CPEC

• The provincial interim cabinet on February 09, 2023 approved rules and regulations for corporate farming under the CPE C project.
• Under the plan, 127,000 acres of land would be made available for farming in five selected districts.
• `Corporate farming will help in agricultural research, food security, and for-est and livestock research. Land can be given for a maximum of 30 years for corporate farming and those who get land for farming will not get ownership rights,` the CM said.
• Caretaker Chief Minister Mohsin Naqvi presided over the cabinet meeting which was also attended by IG Police Dr Usman Anwar and Chief Secretary Zahid Akhtar Zaman


4. Two militants killed in Nowshera raid

• Two militants of banned Tehreek-i-Taliban Pakistan were killed by the Counter Terrorism Department (CTD) of police during an intelligence-based operation in Nowshera on February 09, 2023 night.
• According to details provided by police, a raid was planned following information about presence of militants in Misri Banda in the jurisdiction of Risalpur police station.
• A police official said that the team reached the spot to arrest the militants


5. PTA barred from blocking websites without consultation

• The government has barred the Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) from blocking any website without consulting the Ministry of Information Technology and Telecommunication.
• The decision was made in a ministerial committee meeting chaired by IT Minister Syed Aminul Haque. The committee was established by the prime minister on Feb 6 after PTA blocked Wikipedia, the free online encyclopedia.
• Law Minister Azam Nazeer Tarar and Commerce Minister Syed Naveed Qamar also attended the meeting alongside other members of the committee

6. Hayat replaces Ansari as KP police chief

• The federal government on February 09, 2023 removed Inspector General of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Moazzam Jah Ansari and appointed a junior officer to head the provincial police force.
• The replacement of the KP police chief takes place amid escalation of attacks by militant groups in the province.
• A notification issued by the Establishment Division said: `With the approval of the federal government, Mr Mozzam Jah Ansari, Officer of Police Service of Pakistan, presently serving as Provincial Police Officer (PPO), Government of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, is transferred and directed to report to Establishment Division, with immediate effect and until further orders


7. Zelensky tells Europeans `we are defending you`

• Ukraine`s President Volodymyr Zelensky received a hero`s welcome to Brussels on February 09, 2023 as he lobbied star-struck EU leaders for help to repel a renewed Russian offensive.
• Two weeks ahead of the first anniversary of Europe`s most brutal conflict since the 1940s, Zelensky has embarked on only his second foreign trip since Moscow launched a full-scale invasion.
• After Wednesday`s visits to London and Paris to lobby Britain, France and Germany for modern fighter jets and long-range missiles, the former actor turned war leader came to Brussels to address EU leaders and MEPs


8. North Korea unveils `record` number of ICBMs at military parade

• North Korea`s Kim Jong Un oversaw a major military parade showcasing a record number of nuclear and intercontinental ballistic missiles, state media reported on Thursday, including what analysts said was possibly a new solid-fuelled ICBM.
• The parade on Wednesday to mark the 75th founding anniversary of North Korea`s armed forces featured fireworks, military bands and uniformed soldiers marching in unison to spell out `2.8` the date of the celebration and `75` the official Korean Central News Agency reported.
• Kim attended the parade with his wife, Ri Sol Ju, and daughter Ju Ae, video on state media showed


9. Malaysia to host talks between Thai govt, Muslim groups

• Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim expressed optimism on February 09, 2023 over the prospects of lasting peace for Thailand`s troubled deep south, pledging to do whatever it takes following talks with his Thai counterpart in Bangkok.
• A low-level confiict in Thailand`s southern provinces has been simmering since 2004 and claimed more than 7,000 lives as rebels in the Muslim-majority region battle for greater autonomy from the state.
• Malaysia is set to host peace talks in Kuala Lumpur this month between the Thai government and the separatist movement Barisan Revolusi Nasional


10. Australia to remove Chinese-made cameras from defence sites

• Australia`s defence department will strip its buildings of Chinese-made security cameras to ensure they are `completely secure`, the government said on February 09, 2023.
• It follows similar moves in the United States and Britain, which have taken measures to stop government departments installing Chinese-made cameras at sensitive sites.
• Both countries have expressed fears that Chinese companies could be forced to share intelligence collected by the cameras with Beijing`s security services
