1. Entire country left in the dark by massive breakdown

• Millions of citizens were left without power on January 23, 2023 after a massive breakdown hit the fragile national grid in the morning and kept almost the entire country without electricity until late in the night.
• Energy Minister Khurram Dastgir said on Monday night, more than 12 hours after the breakdown occurred, that officials had begun restoring electricity across the country. Power was beginning to return in parts Islamabad and Balochistan, he said.
• The minister had earlier said that electricity across the country would be fully restored by 10pm on Monday after the breakdown triggered by `frequency variation` in the national grid hit Pakistan.
• In an interview with Geo News earlier, Mr Dastgir said the breakdown was not `major`. He said, `In winter, the demand for electricity reduces nationwide, hence, as an economic measure, we temporarily close down our power generation systems at night


2. SBP raises key rate to tame rampant inflation

• The State Bank of Pakistan (SBP) on January 23, 2023 raised its key interest rate by 100 basis points to a 25-year high of 17 per cent in an attempt to tame persistently high inflation, stressing that achieving price stability was crucial for attaining sustainable economic growth in the future.
• Announcing the central bank`s monetary policy, SBP Governor Jameel Ahmad also told a news conference that the country needed only less than $3 billion for debt servicing in the remaining five months of the current fiscal year.
• The increase of100 bps in the country`s benchmark rate was in line with the expectations of most economists and market watchers, according to a Reuters survey.


3. Punjab chief secretary, Lahore CCPO transferred

• The newly installed caretaker Punjab government has got Senior Member Board of Revenue (SMBR) Zahid Akhtar Zaman transferred and posted as Punjab chief secretary.
• Mr Zaman has replaced Chief Secretary Abdullah Khan Sumbal.
• On the other hand, Punjab has transferred Lahore Capital City Police Office Ghulam Mahmood Dogar and replaced him with Bilal Siddique Kamyana.
• The federal government on Monday issued the transfer and posting order of the new chief secretary


4. Soldier martyred in Bannu, militant killed in Khyber

• A Pakistan Army soldier was martyred in a bomb blast in Bannu and a suspected militant was killed in a joint operation in Khyber tribal district on January 23, 2023.
• A local official told Dawn that an improvised explosive device (IED) was planted by militants in the Janikhel area of Bannu district and it exploded when it was being defused by the bomb disposal unit.
• `The [explosive] device went off when it was being defused.
• Sepoy Gul Sher suffered serious injuries in the blast. He was rushed to the Combined Military Hospital, Bannu, but succumbed to injuries,` he said


5. Pakistan among nations at risk from toxic fat: WHO

• Pakistan is among the countries where industrially-produced fat still poses a risk to a considerable number of the population, the World Health Organisation said on January 23, 2023.
• Industrially-produced trans fat is often used in packaged foods, baked goods, cooking oils and spreads.
• The WHO called in 2018 for harmful trans fatty acids to be wiped out by 2023. They are thought to be responsible for around 500,000 premature deaths from coronary heart disease each year

6. Cabinet to take key economic decisions

• Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has called a meeting of the federal cabinet in which some significant economic decisions are expected to be taken.
• Although the agenda of the meeting was not issued till the filing of this report, sources in the PM Office said some significant economic decisions would be taken to revive IMF programme, while Monday`s countrywide power outage will also be discussed.
• The cabinet will also consider the PTI`s threat to take to the streets against the appointment of Syed Mohsin Raza Naqvi as caretaker Chief Minister of Punjab.
• PM felicitates Naqvi Earlier, Prime Minister Sharif hailed the appointment of Mr Naqvi as the caretaker CM and felicitated him

7. Poland signals intent to send German tanks to Ukraine

• Poland`s prime minister said on Monday his government would ask Germany for permission to send Leopard tanks to Ukraine and planned to send them whether or not Berlin agreed.
• The Kyiv government wants the German-made Leopard 2 tank to break through Russian lines and recapture territory this year.
• Pressure on Berlin which must approve re-exports of the Leopard also came from EU foreign ministers meeting in Brussels. Latvia`s foreign minister said `there are no good arguments` why the battle tanks could not be provided


8. UN dedicates World Education Day to Afghan girls and women

• The United Nations has urged the global community to remind Afghanistan`s de facto rulers on the International Day of Education that they need to `let the Afghan girls learn`.
• The United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation (Unesco) will observe the day on Jan 24 (Tuesday).
• `Unesco would like to dedicate the fifth edition of this International Day to all the girls and women in Afghanistan, who have been denied their right to learn, study and teach,` said the organisation`s Director General Audrey Azoulay.
• `The Organization condemns this serious attack on human dignity and on the fundamental right to education


9. Probe into Beirut blast resumes after 13 months

• The Lebanese judge investigating the deadly 2020 Beirut port blast has resumed his work, a judicial official said on January 23, 2023, after a 13-month suspension due to political pressure.
• The probe into the cause of the Aug 4, 2020 blast, one of history`s largest non-nuclear explosions, had been stalled since December 2021 as a series of complaints against the judge obstructed his work.
• No state official has yet been held accountable over the explosion, which killed more than 215 people and destroyed swathes of the capital.
• Authorities said hundreds of tonnes of ammonium nitrate fertiliser haphazardly stocked in a port warehouse since 2014 had caught fire, causing the explosion


10. EU, UK and US impose new sanctions on Tehran over protests

• Relations between Iran and Europe have deteriorated sharply, with the EU and Britain ramping up sanctions against the Islamic republic over its response to more than four months of protests.
• Separately, the United States on January 23, 2023 imposed sanctions on Iran`s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps Cooperative Foundation and senior Iranian officials, stepping up pressure on Tehran over its crackdown on protests.
• Iran`s ties with the West have long been tense,0ver issues ranging from its contentious nuclear programme to its role in regional conflicts and the detentions of foreigners and dual nationals
