1. IMF announces long-awaited visit

• A day after Pakistan removed the exchange rate cap giving way to over nine per cent depreciation of the rupee, the International Monetary Fund (IMF) on January 26, 2023 announced fielding its staff mission to Pakistan on Jan 31 for talks on the 9th quarterly review of a funding programme pending for almost four months.
• `At the request of the (Pakistan) authorities, an in-person Fund mission is scheduled to visit Islamabad January 31stFebruary 9th to continue the discussions under the ninth Extended Fund Facility (EFF) review, said the Fund`s resident representative in Islamabad, Esther Perez Ruiz.
• Pakistan formally conveyed to the IMF its willingness on Jan 19 to accept all four major conditions and requested for the mission to visit Islamabad to conclude a long awaited agreement for the programme


2. Punjab, KP caretaker cabinets sworn in

• Caretaker cabinets of Punjab and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa were sworn in by the respective governors in Lahore and Peshawar on January 26, 2023.
• As an eight-member cabinet of Punjab took oath, caretaker Chief Minister Mohsin Naqvi pledged to hold `free and fair` elections in the province in an effective manner.
• Governor Balighur Rehman administered the oath to S.M Tanveer, Dr Javed Akram, Ibrahim Murad, Bilal Afzal, Dr Jamal Nasir, Mansoor Qadir, Syed Azfar Ali Nasir and Aamir Mir.
• Chief Secretary Zahid Akhtar Zaman read out the notification of their appointment. CM Naqvi and IGP Dr Usman Anwar were among others present at the ceremony.


3. No backchannel diplomacy with India, Senate told

• While speaking in the Senate during Question Hour, Minister of State for Foreign Affairs Hina Rabbani Khar on January 26, 2023 said that `ever since the incumbent government came to power, there has been no backchannel diplomacy between Pakistan and India untold to the rest of the world`.
• Meanwhile, the Foreign Office spokesperson mirrored the minister`s response to a question about Pakistan-India dialogue, while adding that no decision had been taken yet on the invitation extended to Foreign Minister Bilawai Bhutto Zardari by India to attend the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) meeting in that country in May.
• Ms Khar told the Senate that backchannel diplomacy was going on during the days of the PTI government, while noting that there was no harm in backchannel talks if these were result-oriented


4. US vows to help Pakistan overcome economic crisis

• The United States on January 26, 2023 vowed to continue supporting Pakistan in overcoming its unprecedented economic crisis and post-flood challenges.
• The assurance from the US was given by its ambassador to Pakistan, Donald Blome, during his meeting with Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif.
• The Prime Minister Office in its official press release quoted the ambassador as saying: `The United States will continue to support Pakistan`s post-flood recovery as well as the government`s efforts for economic development and reform


5. Missile blitz by Russia kills 11 in Ukraine

• A blistering wave of Russian strikes targeting Ukraine`s energy infrastructure killed 11 people on January 26, 2023, a day after Germany and the United States pledged heavy tanks for Kyiv.
• The latest wave of attacks came as the Kremlin said Moscow perceived the tank deliveries `as direct involvement in the conflict`. France insisted that neither Paris nor its allies were fighting a war against Russia.
• `This should have happened sooner and in bigger quantities,` a Ukrainian doctor called Liza said near the eastern frontline city of Bakhmut, welcoming the long-awaited promise of heavy tanks

6. EU to speed up returns of migrants denied asylum

• EU interior ministers on January 26, 2023 discussed how to return irregular migrants to their home countries more effectively with some arguing for limiting visas to uncooperative nations.
• `Returning those who have been denied asylum in Europe is a really important issue,` said Maria Malmer Stenergard, migration minister for Sweden, which hosted the meeting as current holder of the EU presidency.
• European Commission statistics show that in 2021, out of 340,500 orders for migrants to be returned to their countries of origin, only 21 per cent were carried out


7. Israeli forces kill 10 Palestinians in `bloody` West Bank raid

• Israeli forces in the West Bank killed 10 Palestinians on January 26, 2023, officials in the occupied territory said, nine of them in a raid the Israeli military described as a `counterterrorism operation`.
• The bloodiest day in the West Bank in years erupted during a raid on the crowded refugee camp in the northern city of Jenin, where gunshots rang through the streets and smoke billowed from burning street barricades.
• The Palestinian health ministry put the death toll from the clashes at nine, including a woman, adding that 20 people were wounded before the Israeli forces withdrew mid-morning


8. Global economic growth projected to slow down to 1.9pc this year: UN report

• A new United Nations report warns that the global economic growth is projected to slow down to only 1.9 per cent in 2023, sharply lower than the 3pc in 2022. However, the report says, the global growth is forecast to moderately pick up to 2.7pc in 2024.
• This will be one of the lowest growth rates in recent decades, apart from the 2007-8 financial crisis and the height of the Covid-19 pandemic, said the World Economic Situation and Prospects 2023 report, released on Wednesday The outlook for South Asia has deteriorated and is subject to multiple downside risks amid global monetary tightening, fiscal vulnerabilities, rising inflation and extreme weather vents. The regional GDP growth is expected to slow to 4.8pc in 2023 from an estimated 5.6pc expansion in 2022.
• In Pakistan, the economy is expected to expand by only2.5pcin 2023 as devastating Hoods caused significant damages, particularly for agriculture, with spillover effects on related industrial and service sectors


9. Asteroid to come `extraordinarily close` to Earth

• A truck-sized asteroid will pass near Earth on January 26, 2023 in one of the closest approaches to our planet ever recorded, Nasa said, emphasising that it poses no danger.
• Asteroid 2023 BU, which was recently discovered by an amateur astronomer, will zoom by the southern tip of South America on Thursday, according to Nasa. It will pass just 2,200 miles from Earth`s surface, much closer than many geostationary satellites orbiting the planet. But there is no risk that the asteroid will hit Earth, Nasa said in a statement on Wednesday


10. Babar named ICC Cricketer of the Year for stellar show in 2022

• The ICC Men`s Cricketer of the Year award is staying in Pakistan.
• Pakistan captain Babar Azam on January 26, 2023 bagged the Sir Garfield Sobers Trophy, following speedster Shaheen Shah Afridi in becoming only the second cricketer from the country to win the prestigious award given to the best player across all formats by the International Cricket Council.
• Just hours before the ICC made the announcement, Babar was also named the One-day International Player of the Year. In doing so, Babar retained his crown as the world`s best player in the one-day format the first player to do so after Virat Kohli, who won the award in 2017 and 2018
