1. Punjab envisages Rs20lbn surplus budget
• The Punjab government has plans to present Rs201 billion surplus budget for the financial year 2020-21, projecting an income of Rs2.38 trillion and expenditure of Rs2.179tr. The estimated budget proposals feature Rs322.8 billion Annual Development Programme (ADP).
• Despite the fact that the coronavirus pandemic has emerged as one of the biggest healthcare and economic crises around the globe and squeezed Pakistan`s economy as well, the Punjab government still expects Rs2.38tr receipts against Rs2.3tr receipts estimated for the current 2019-20 fiscal.
• The budget proposals allow the Punjab government to spend Rs1,856.2bn during the next fiscal some Rs138.6bn (eight per cent) more than the current year`s proposed expenditure of Rs1,717.6bn.The government has estimated Rs1,427.6bn for current expenditure, Rs94.6bn for current capital expenditure and Rs334bn under the head of Expenditure A/c-II Food.
2. Pakistan secures debt relief from Paris Club
• The Paris Club of creditor nations have so far waived $1.1 billion euros of debt servicing payments due this year from some of the world`s poorest countries under a G20 deal and more relief is on the way soon, the group said on June 10, 2020.
• The Paris Club said it had agreed to suspend interest and principal repayments from Chad, Ethiopia, Pakistan and Republic of Congo in the latest wave of countries given some financial leeway to help them focus on fighting the coronavirus pandemic.
• The Group of 20 leading economies and the Paris Club, an informal group of state creditors coordinated by the French finance ministry, agreed in April to freeze debt payments of the 77 poorest countries this year.
3. KP to have four new economic zones
• The Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Economic Zones Development and Management Company (EZDMC) on June 10, 2020 approved launching of four new economic zones across the province.
• The approval was made at the 36th meeting of the board of directors on Wednesday, according to a statement issued here.
• It approved launching of economic zones in Ghazi, Chitral, Jalozai and extension of the Nowshera economic zone.
4. ECC allows duty-free import of wheat
• The Economic Coordination Committee (ECC) of the Cabinet on June 10, 2020 allowed tax and dutyfree import of wheat. The committee placed a complete ban on wheat export as the commodity`s price in local markets shot up.
• The ECC `allowed import of wheat by the private sector for unlimited period after waiving different taxes and duties`, said an official statement after the meeting. It further issued directives to remove restrictions on the movement of wheat and flour within the country.
• The ECC meeting, presided over by Finance Adviser Dr Abdul Hafeez Shaikh, also rejected the Ministry of Petroleum`s request for quarterly fuel price adjustment to bailout out the oil industry. It approved about Rs29 billion worth of additional funds for 12 ministries and divisions just two days ahead of the new budget
5. Pakistan among six nations with upward virus trends
• America`s most reliable source of data on the spread of coronavirus on June 10, 2020 placed Pakistan among those six countries where the disease continues to show an upward trend.
• Although the US is on a list of countries where coronavirus cases are going down, by Wednesday it had registered atotalof1,982,264 cases.
• Also, on Wednesday Arizona reactivated hospital emergency plans as almost half of the50USstatesreported spikes in coronavirus cases.
6. Etihad resumes flights from Pakistan
• Abu Dhabi`s Etihad Airways is to start operation from Pakistan nearly two months after coronavirus-related lockdown, with flights scheduled from Karachi and Lahore on June 13.
• According to a senior aviation official, Etihad Airways will be resuming its twice-weekly flights from Karachi and Lahore for outbound passengers only.
• `Etihad Airways can`t bring passengers from abroad [inbound] due to government restrictions; however, they are allowed to repatriate people stranded in Pakistan,` said the official

8. ADB okays $500m loan to Pakistan
• The Asian Development Bank (ADB) has approved a $500 million loan to Pakistan for social protection, health and fiscal stimulus for growth and job creation.
• In a statement, the ADB said the loan would deliver social protection programmes to the poor and vulnerable, expand health sector capabilities, and deliver a pro-poor fiscal stimulus to boost growth and create jobs as the country fights the novel coronavirus.
• `The Covid-19 pandemic hit Pakistan at a critical point in its ongoing economic recovery programme,` said ADB President Masatsugu Asakawa. `We are fully committed to supporting Pakistan through this difficult period. This loan will help plug selected funding gaps as the government implements its countercyclical development plan, including strengthening the country`s social safety net and health sector capacity.
9. China says `consensus` with India over border tensions
• China said on June 10, 2020 it had reached a `positive consensus` with India over resolving tensions at the border between the two countries, where troops have faced off in recent weeks.
• Tensions flare on a fairly regular basis between the two regional powers over their 3,500-kilometre (2,200-mile) frontier, which has never been properly demarcated.
• Thousands of troops from the two nuclear-armed neighbours have been involved in the latest face-off since May in India`s Ladakh region, just opposite Tibet before signs in recent days that a resolution was in sight
10. `Kawasaki disease` doctor dies at 95
• The Japanese doctor who discovered the mysterious `Kawasaki`s disease` recently in the headlines for some similarities to coronavirus has died of natural causes aged 95, his research NGO said on June 10, 2020
• Paediatrician Tomisaku Kawasaki first noticed the disease in the 1960s as a junior doctor when he began treating children with fever, red eyes and a rash with no clear cause.
• He reported 50 cases as an unknown disorder in 1967, since when the condition which mostly affects very young children has become internationally recognised as `Kawasaki disease.
